Highlights and lowlights of Coronation Street

Why have all the women in Coronation Street started to look the same?

It's the long, straight dark hair that does it.

Admittedly, Sophie and Rosie are meant to look similar as they're sisters...

... and Carla and Michelle are related too, so it's understandable that they'd look similar, but it still feels like a 'type' of woman is being developed in Weatherfield.  They're all morphing into each other these days.

Think about those female characters who don't fall into the dark haired beauties of Weatherfield. Characters like Gemma, Rita, Jenny flaming Bradley, Yasmeen, Sally, Cathy, Gail, Audrey, Sarah - characters that are much more interesting both visually and dramatically.

And think back to the glory days of the soap when the women were celebrated with the highlights and lowlights of their life as dramatic as those in their hairdos.

She'll always be Jenny Bradley to me.

Nicola and Shona look very alike and I've previously said in a post that it was confusing. They were both bland characters when they arrived and both became connected to Eileen. When one of the two characters was in Eileen's living room, I had to wait for the dialogue to work out which one it was. I've also noticed that several female characters have names ending in 'a': Nicola, Shona, Gina, Rana, Alya. Small point and maybe only troubles the mentally bewildered but, with the likelihood of new characters on the Street, at least give them distinguishable names.

Aren't Michelle and Carla just sisters-in-law? They aren't blood related. Or maybe at this point they're cousins? So confusing...

She'll always be Jennie Bradley to me too. And, as I have said before, why do all Corrie women have to change their names when they marry? In the rest of the western world, many women keep their maiden name upon marriage.

As for so many women having names ending in "a" - - - well, that is a feminine suffix in English, so that will likely always be true. Same as "ette" or "elle" in French.

THere was a time on an American soap that my mom watched (Young and Restless) when I couldn't tell all the blondes apart. The casting agents or producers sometimes get stuck on a "type".

I giggled at ‘Flaming’ still, even after all these years. Ha ha

You missed out Tracey, Anna, and probably, given time. Amy. Also, why do they all have to be glamorous, with perfect hair and full make-up.? No one goes about like that all the time in everyday life. I love Sally, Jenny flamin' Bradley, and Gemma because they look like normal women, not wannabe models, Sinead's another one, grr.

The reason the characters look interchangeable is to facilitate suddenly shifting a particular plot to another actress (due to pregnancy or other leave of absence). In other words, they look interchangeable because they are.

Actually, these days, Rosie is blond. Yasmeen, however, does have dark hair; she just wears it short. She may not be Vogue cover beautiful, but she is kind, stylish, poised and articulate, all of which reflect an inner beauty that no amount of eyeliner will ever match.

@ M Wiersema Didn't Carla find out that Johnny was her real dad, which makes her Aidan and Kate's half sister, so Michelle's cousin? Or something like that.

Back in the day, ie for those of us born before 1970, morality was mapped onto hair colour. Blond = good/angelic. Brunette = bad/malevolent. (I remember this because I used to watch Days of Our Lives, which followed this gospel.) Corrie was refreshing because blond did not mean good girl. It meant Northern stock. Blond, red-headed, a bit of Irish.

Now with Brexit and a wave of xenophobia sweeping parts of the land, it might be that the casting agents are bucking two previous trends. 1) Now good girls are allowed to be brunette. 2) The new face of Northern life is no longer blonde or ginger, but other genetic groups, like Sephardic, South Asian, etc. Unfortunately this choice also creates a new type: the brunette as Other, outliers, non-native to the Street.

Michelle married Paul Connor, so she is technically not blood related to Carla, regardless of the fact that Johnny is her dad.

Close but backwards. Michelle was Paul and Liam’s, both deceased, sister. Carla married Paul and had an affair with Liam. Technically, it was Carla having relations with her relations, but at the time they didn’t know, and they were distant enough that it should have been okay biologically.

Very true, they do look the same and it is quite difficult to tell a lot of them apart.
The men are worse for me with their black beards ! I often have to ask my husband "Who is that?" it is so hard to tell them apart.
Where have all the "characters" gone. Replaced with sighing long haired black haired women. Grrrr.
