Where are they now? Corrie Icons of the 80s - Sean Wilson

Here we go with a look back at some of the Coronation Street icons from the 1980s. Let's find out what they've been up to since they left the show.

Sean Wilson played Martin Platt

Sean Wilson played Martin Platt in Coronation Street for over 20 years.

Martin married Gail and is dad to David Platt. On-screen Martin lives in Liverpool and hasn't been killed off. David sometimes goes to stay with his dad, so there's always the chance that Martin could make a return, although it may have to be with another actor, as Sean Wilson seems to be a very busy chap these days away from acting.

After leaving Coronation Street, Sean appeared on TV in Doctors, The Royal, Waterloo Road, Casualty and Silent Witness.

After a year working in a Michelin-starred kitchen, Sean went on to set up The Saddleworth Cheese Company and is now an award-making cheese maker.

Sean released The Great Northern Cookbook, which is definitely worth a read. I've got the book and use if often.

I always thought it was odd that Martin didn't return at least to comfort David and adopted daughter Sarah, even with a different face, in special times like the canal incident, Kylie's death, or Lily and Harry's births. I thought Martin was supposed to have a new family now. Even so, he divorced Gail, not the kids. I don't remember how it was left after the horrible story with Katy Harris, but I wouldn't mind his return or a visit.

Yes, very odd that David has no contact with her father, and this not raised as an issue. Martin was supposedly in Blackpool and I know it is very hard to get a visa to enter Blackpool nowadays but still.

They should really have Martin move to Spain or something. Every time there's a big event in David's life - which there frequently is - they have to gloss over the fact that his own father couldn't be bothered going a few miles down the M62 to visit.

David did take Max & Lily to stay with Martin back during his persecution by Callum. I agree though that there should be more frequent mentions of him. It might be good to see Martin return (with a new head) with his new family when the show expands in the autumn. It makes far more sense to introduce characters who already have history with established residents (Gina, Jude &c) rather than the risky Whole New Family (the Hopkins, the Mortons).

I have to say, I really enjoyed his Great Northern Cooking show. He was very personable and funny. And I guess....he can really make great cheese!
