New shop to open in Corrie?

According to the Sunday Mirror (via Digital Spy) a cash converters style shop is set to open on Coronation Street.  The article says that producers are introducing it to 'reflect credit crunch Britain'.

I think it might be good to have a bit of a chain shop on the show, instead of independent shops, especially with so many independent stores facing closure.

Whereabouts could the new store open? The old Butchers is probably the prime candidate, since it has been empty since 2010.  Another location could be Terry Duckworth's old club on Viaduct Street. Perhaps it could even replace Underworld, since the existence of the factory is becoming more than a little outdated.

Is that like a pawn shop?

There are these kind of shops opening up on a lot of the more "working class" areas of Britain every week. However there is no point in opening this kind of shop when everyone in Corrie land seems immune from the austerity and credit crunch that is affecting the rest of Britain. Nobody struggles on the street, jobs are two a penny, they eat out all the time and wear designer gear. Producers and directors need to get realistic before a token "pawn" shop is plonked in the middle of Coronation Street.

Have to agree with Frosty. One thing that always strikes me is why the factory girls have to go out and buy clothes when they could run up a dress at home. I guess most would have access to a machine. 'Making your own' would be much more realistic.

Dare we hope for some new, interesting characters? We can only live in hope.
