There's a little story in today's Sun that says two new families will be joining Coronation Street.
The Sun says that cast members have been told the new families will live in two nearby streets which will be created when the Coronation Street set moves to its new base.
Our old friend, a Corrie source revealed to The Sun: “The producers plan to bring Rosamund Street and Viaduct Street into things a bit more. Those streets have always been on the outskirts – people are referred to as coming from there but you never see much of them. Now they are going to become home for a lot of new faces who will
hopefully be just as popular with viewers as the rest of the cast. The feeling is that we need fresh characters to spin the action about.”

Corre has always been restricted by the fact that there are only about a dozen places for a family to live in. Somewhere like Victoria Court, or above the shops, is great for couples and singles, but a mum, dad and three kids aren't going to fit in there - in fact, they probably wouldn't fit in anywhere but the "new" houses on the street. And since two of those are occupied by the Platts and the Websters, they're not coming up for sale anytime soon.
This is the advantage EastEnders has; their much larger set has plenty of scope, with a number of houses that aren't even used. A new family can be slotted right in.
The only doubt I have is that the set being built in the Quays isn't actually any bigger. There aren't any new streets and there aren't any new houses. So they might live in Viaduct Street, but we'll never get to see them leaving their house...
If yet more families are to join the street then I suggest other families are written out to make way, ahem the Alahans?
Hear, hear Frosty!!
Trouble is, all the new families will be used for is to set up even more "love triangles" (yawn).
What the programme needs is writers to come up with original storylines, instead of rehashing the old ones over and over.
Whats the name of the street behind coronation street that shares the ginnel. I always think its funny nobody ever comes out of their back yards there to say hello now and again. Their a very quiet lot, staying inside for 50 years without even poking their heads over the back wall when the odd shop or restaurant blows up- Micky
That's Mawdsley Street behind the ginnel. They'd be better off extending Victoria Street a little with more houses, really.
I think Rosamund Street is definately going to extend past Victoria Street, with a new street opening up behind Victoria Street, Viaduct Street is kinda restricted though. Mawdsley Street is going to look slightly improved though, with the houses now having roofs
It's a great idea and I hope it is developed properly - as has already been siad, no more love triangles or surprise pregnancies please. There has to be scope for someone setting up a day care centre or nursery now!
Yes, Coronation St itself is so small that it has been a bit claustrophobic. Being able to see adjoining streets now, and new characters who live on them and new businesses, will open up the show a lot. No more love triangles? I agree! Yawn-o.
Let's just hope that it isn't all opened up a bit too much, or the show's unique flavour will be diluted or even spoilt.
Interested in seeing more streets. Maybe now the show should rename itself to Weatherfield? Don't just make Coronation Street the primary setting?
I Agree with Micky! even when they have shots of the street or ginnel you never see anyone, or if someone goes missing (kids) they often do, they never seem to look in there garden...its like kids only stay on one street...and as Micky says no one on that street ever pops out. if someone's shouting or something could say Hello ect... - FROM BOBBY.
Wouldn't it be great if the old sets of the orginal Kabin and Jims Cafe and even Swindleys shop were used again as new businesses !
It does not need new characters as much as it desperately needs a new Producer and new writers with some imagination.
About time I was waiting for more new families. I just started watching a year ago and i'm already bored with these characters.
It would be good to have an Indian family on the street.
