We've never had this many young'uns at one time on Coronation Street that I can remember. There are seven school aged children attending Bessie Street school and there are four rugrats and one soon to be born. Add in to that a possible surrogacy storyline which would contribute another baby.
Are there too many babies and children on Coronation Street? Yes, I think so. Read about it here, along with my speculation on the near future.

I was thinking just the same thing t'other day, Tvor. Corrie is getting quite claustrophobic IMHO; there's summat in the water as either gets any female pregnant, or desperate to have a baby but can't. The absolute pinnacle of success is either working at rhe Rovers, the Faktry or, at a shove, the corner shop (which together seem to provide full employment for the street). The chippy, kebab shop, precinct, Victoria Court all seem to have disappeared in the smog.
It's all just same old same old. Shame this Blog couldn't write it's own episode, it would be dynamite!
Fat Brenda off to do a PhD in astrophysics with Brian Cox; Sophie gets a grant to set up a LBGT dropin centre in Dev's Viccy Court Flat; Sylvia gets a contract to do catalogue modelling - see, TPTB, not tricky and not a baby in sight!
Thank you for your post, Tvor. I completely agree with you!
I also don't think that the surrogacy will go ahead for the reason you mentioned - three babies in the Windass/Armstrong/Battersby clan would be pushing it I think. This then makes me wonder whether the writers will keep Izzy and Gary together or break them up. The latter would be a great shame but considering that this is Corrie and how desperate Gary is to have a child, pretty much anything is possible. Gary and Izzy have been one of my favourite recent couples in Corrie but I am the first to admit that this current storyline does not give the two actors, or characters, any service.
Oh, I'm hoping that after the turkey baster event (since they won't be able to afford the real IVF with Izzy's own egss and Gary's little army, that Katy does not fall for Gary and want to keep the baby....oh no.
ChiaGwen, I have considered that myself. Because this is Corrie and the good couples never stay together, a Katy/Gary relationship is possible! It'll be poor Chesney who I feel sorry for! This would be utterly ridiculous of course, especially considering that Izzy and Gary are one of the stronger couples on the street. Watch this space I guess.
Well, we've already done the turkey baster thing on Corrie with Sean. So, I am strongly suspicious that Katy will get the brillian idea to impregnate the old fashioned way and lead to some trouble between the two couples.
Oh no. I think you guys might be right. About trouble between the two couples and maybe Katy falling for Gary. It'd be interesting but it also makes me think no-one can be happy on soaps :( Apart from maybe Roy and Hayley.
Too many kids - too many flaming PEOPLE. Constantly bringing in new cast members and writing out none, in the past weeks we have had Carla's bro, Michelle's son, soon to have Michelle's mother, Faye's dad, and Kirsty and her ma and pa. Groan. Where IS DENNIS???
I totally agree. A pregnancy storyline is an obvious one, and allows various dramatic possibilityies, but then the viewers are stuck with years of a child that can barely act or can't act at all, plus endless scenes where the children are completely forgotten about when it suits, followed by the inevitable recasting when the child morphs into someone completely different.
Phil Collinson said in an interview when he took over that he thought there were too many children in the cast, yet despite that has been resonsible for a veritable baby boom.
Please, please, please concentrate on adult characters, and preferably ones that can actually act.
Yes, unfortunately no couple can live happily ever after on Soaps. However, I don't see why the writers would decide to break up Gary and Izzy when they only got back together in Christmas 2011. These two work so well together. Gary was attracted to Izzy for her independence, individuality and ability to assist him through his post traumatic stress. I don't see how he could be attracted to Katy in the same way other than her being able to provide him with a family!
Have you ever investigated how many children on that street are the product of single parent/step parent families... There are not many kids with two parents who are together! Just find it fascinating :)
I always find it hilarious when the kids, having been cast as babies purely because they were born at the right time and because their mother agreed, then turn into usually abysmal actors and dare I say it quite ugly....... then suddenly they're re-cast and appear in a new uber glam stance, a few years older than they were the episode before, and with a new personality. You all know who I mean. And I can't wait to see when this undoubtedly happens with baby Jack. -A-
Alex Bain (Simon) is the only quality child actor in Corrie who manages to steal a scene. He's a terrific wee actor.
I don't know why the writers decided to write pregnancy storylines for both Fiz and Chesney during 2010 and 2011. It would have been far more interesting to see Gary and Izzy starting a family. Perhaps it's due to the recent births of Hope and Joseph that makes this current surrogacy story so unoriginal and repetitive? Despite this, Mikey and Cherylee's acting has been brilliant throughout and I just hope they can survive their latest obstacles - something which most other Corrie couples would fail to do. They got through Gary's post traumatic stress afterall...
I think Simon Barlow is the most obnoxious brat I have ever seen. He isn't funny and his lines are just cringworthy. Like when Peter bought him a computer and the smarmy brat made a remark about how Peter is crap with computers so doesn't want him to help him set it up. And nobody does anything. He needs a hard slap.
And I agree, the baby boom is getting ridiculous. There are too many characters in the cast, and most of the decent ones hardly get screen time.
