When Kim Crowther took over as Coronation Street producer in 2008 we had a dicussion on the blog as to how we felt she was doing. And now with Phil Collinson at the helm, the question raises its head again.
For what it's worth, here's what I think and I'd be delighted to hear what other Corrie fans think too. Please leave comments in the box below.
I reckon Phil's onto a winner as he's upped the pace over the last couple of weeks. The drama's moving along nicely and we're onto a belter with Peter thumping Nick, that was always going to be a ratings hit from our sofa. I'd like to punch Nick myself. The comedy quota's been updated - Deirdre getting a Manchester tart in the face - was priceless and a joy. There's been some nice words between Audrey and Rita and I just think it's moving along at a nice pace with some really good stuff and loads more to come.
In the next few weeks we've got Ken's long lost son turning up, Natasha leaving, Sophie and Sian getting serious, and by far the best thing for this fan - and about bloody time too - Roy and Hayley getting married. Legally, properly, Corriely. I know Corriely's not a word, but Roy and Hayley are ace. How do you think Phil Collinson is doing?

I'd say so far so good. The writing and stories over the past month have been great. Even the Stapewich stuff was great and i hate Stape and fear for Fiz's very soul ;) but the storyline is good and the addition of Charlotte to things was excellent. Really looking forward to the wedding and gotta say, Rachel Leskovak is hitting it out of the park! It's too bad they wasted her for so long when she's been so good lately!
For the last month it's been quite good. The Stape storyline was better than I expected, Lewis/Audrey/Deirdre triangle was excellent with the Manchester tart a plus. I was a bit miffed when he mentioned that Corrie's past doesn't matter but with Ken finding he had a son with Susan Cunningham back in 1960 is another nod to the rich history Corrie has. So far so good. Roy and Hayley's wedding will be good. I thought Kim Crowther did a godd job as well. She concentrated on the older cast like Norris, Emily, Rita and Ken. Even Betty when she was 90! Hope Phil will be as good!
If Kim hadn't have gone, I don't know if I'd still be watching, she started off well, but then she just dragged out storylines beyond belief.
Philhas done a good job so far, the pacing has improved massively, nearly all the cast are now getting a look in and there's a real community feeling back on the street
So far, I'd say there's been a big improvement. We seem to getting more of the little character moments that have been lacking in recent years, humerous moments within dramatic stories, and best of all better interaction between regulars.
I think it's still to early to say, really I think the next few months with the build up to the 50th anniversary will be much more telling.
But so far...loved the Audrey/Lewis story. I think it's great that it brought so many characters into one storyline, especially two core families (Barlows and Platts) who have never really interacted much before this year. The Natasha/Nick plot has been good too, and Sophie/Sian is continuing at a nice pace.
However, the Fiz/John storyline has been awful IMO. I've just found it so dull and pathetic. I know it's supposed to be exciting, but I find Fiz and John so boring, I just can't believe that this will drag on.
I'm not sure I agree with all of his axings, and some of his future storylines but I guess some of these are probably just rumours. We haven't seen Becky much recently which is good so hopefully he's not obsessed with her in the same way that Kim Crowther was :) Molvin looks set to finish this year (or so I hope) and I do trust Phil to finish it off better than Crowther.
I didn't mind Kim Crowther's years either, but the thing i did mind, and i'm not sure it was all her or some of the previous management as well, was the trend of featuring one character in story after story after story. The "Flavour of the year" thing... even with characters i liked. One year it was all Sean all the time and the next it was all Michelle. The baby switch had to be one of the most ill conceived storylines ever (pun intended) and Hayley's son, that was another one. I'm glad they have both been forgotten completely but since they were out there, it does seem odd they are never referred to. Probably best, though.
Yes, I think it's shaping up well these days. Some interesting stuff going on, maybe a different take on things but still very much Corrie. He could make more use of some of the oldies, although at their ages maybe a couple are quite happy not to be involved that much. I just hope he doesn't squish any old warhorses under that flipping tram - it wouldn't be fittin' (channelling Hattie McDaniel now).
this guy is terrible. ive watched corrie for 5 years an now ive stopped. his storylines are pathetic and boring, especially this john stape 1. there is too many old people and not enough young. how many people are dying, re-name it devastation street. get rid of this guy
^ The John Stape one is Kim Crowther's storyline, in fact most of them still are, but now they're done in the new style, his episodes have only been on screen four weeks.
Kim Crowther's were beyond pathetic, she pushed storylines like Molvin in our faces, Molvin is back now, but it's a lot more bearable as it's not the only storyline taking place.
Like with Kim Crowther there are good and bad and stories that some love and others hate. I too am glad he does not seem to be going with the flavour of the month thing and Becky and Michelle are not constantly in our faces.
What I do think is bad and I am not sure which producer is responsible is the copy cat stories that run in tandem with other soaps, the Lewis/Audrey and Emmerdale Charlie/Diane story as a prime example, now the estranged and stroppy sister turning up for Becky, again being run in tandem with Emmerdale, and thats two examples of many.
Well as far as stroppy sisters, they've done that already on corrie when Violet's sister showed up. She aws awwwwwful and didn't last long after Vi left and i reckon this sister is only a short term thing too. I hope.
Kylie will be very different, I think, she wont just be stroppy, because she's a stroppy person, like the old Becky she's very streetwise and there seems to be a past to her, and it probably ties in with Becky's past, where as Lauren turned up and was just stroppy, because she was a stroppy character.
The Manchester tart in Deidre's face reminded me of the glory days. The whole episode was well paced, brilliantly scripted and acted (with one exception). Sad and shocking events were lightened with great comedy lines and moments.
The exception was Ben Price as Nick Tilsley. He always looks and sounds as if he is suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, as well as looking at least 10 years to old to play Nick.
If Collinson can pack Nick off to Nottingham for another face transplant and produce more epsodes like last Friday's, I might start watching Corrie regularly again.
ive been watching Corrie since the beginning when ena sharples used to scare me as she was so horrible. Maria should go back to acting school as all she ever does is mumble incoherantly she is a lousy actress,a bad actor is when you cant understand what the heck they are talking about, is corrie supposed to be in the slums?
I want Phill to Bring Back Kathy Jones for a few episodes, as Tricia Hopkins, she is an old character who deserves to come back and hook up with Gail again, lotts of other characters have come back, whay not Kathy as Tricia, Kathy has a website and is well up for a return even if it were only a few episodes, she could be visiting the area and pops back to her old street. Phill if you read this PLEASE lets have Kathy back on TV once more.
