5. Hayley's Illness & Suicide (2013-2014)

Roy and Hayley were one of the most beautiful and unbreakable couples in Coronation Street history, so it was hard to imagine Roy surviving on his own when Hayley was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in 2013. Hayley's illness was played out with sensitivity throughout the rest of the year, let's be honest, David Nielson is such an underrated actor and has created an actual masterpiece in the character of Roy, and Julie Hesmondhalgh is a fantastic actress as well.

As Hayley deteriorated over the next few months, she worked through her bucket list, which included seeing her son Christian again, a trip to Blackpool, and teaching Roy to drive, before making the decision to die with dignity early in 2014. She ironed Roy's best shirt for her funeral before taking a lethal cocktail of drugs while in bed with Roy.

Later Anna and Carla found Roy and Hayley in the bedroom, Hayley having passed away in Roy's arms. David Nielson and Julie Hesmondhalgh quite rightly won all the awards going that year and Roy's continued journey without Hayley has been both heartbreaking and heartwarming to watch ever since (every Roy and Carla scene is flawless). A beautifully acted and very emotional storyline.
