Is this the beginning of the end for Peter and Toyah?

Ever since her return, it has been evident that Peter has been seriously rattled by Carla’s presence. And that was even before Carla began going out with Daniel, Peter’s much younger brother. That must rankle. It does, but why? Isn’t Peter with Toyah now, the love of his life, running a pub together with everything going so well? Well, apparently not. Even before the return of Carla, in physical form, she loomed large in Toyah’s consciousness, and she will be watching Peter’s reaction to Carla’s presence, fearing that he still has feelings for her.

Carla and Peter, in the short time she has been back, have developed a kind of warring relationship, both determined to show the other that they could not give a damn. Protesting too much? I’ll say! Carla was particularly vituperative towards Peter, telling him that if he was the last man on earth, she wouldn’t give him a second look – or at least, words to that effect.

Toyah is no fool – she can see what is going on…Peter and Carla - both a little wild, unconventional and with plenty of history, do seem to be a threat to the stability of Toyah and Peter.

Peter and Toyah have never seemed particularly well matched – despite the words we hear the two characters say. We’ve talked here on the blog several times about their lack of spark and credibility as a couple. And it doesn’t get any better;  in fact it feels as if whatever shine there was, is now becoming tarnished.

To want a baby desperately and not to be able to conceive one, must be heart breaking, but at the same time, it can put a dreadful strain on a relationship. Peter was never over-keen on producing another child, but he did it for Toyah. Surrogate Jackie seemed to offer the solution, but it was revealed that she lost the baby. As luck would have it, for Toyah at least, if not for Eva, Eva became pregnant with a baby she did not want. It wouldn’t take a genius to see that possibly something could be worked out, despite practical difficulties.

It’s worth reminding ourselves that as yet, Toyah hasn’t told Peter that Jackie has had a miscarriage. Does that mean that the state of Peter and Toyah’s relationship isn’t as good as it could be? Toyah then is no stranger to deception and of course, Peter has previous form in the deception stakes. Peter will surely discover at some point that Jackie is no longer pregnant, so will wonder where the baby has come from. He might use the discovery of the baby’s having been Eva’s and Toyah’s consequent deception, as an excuse to leave her. Maybe though, as Toyah will be so engrossed in having a baby to look after,  Peter’s leaving will not be such a big deal as it might once have been.
If then Peter does still have feelings for Carla, how will he cope as she lies in hospital in desperate need of a kidney. Yes, all being well, Aidan will provide, but it's risky and even a friend would be concerned, so Peter may well struggle to keep his feelings at bay.

This is all speculation of course, and there’s nothing wrong in that. Time, as ever, will tell.

There seemed to be no logical reason for Toyah not to tell Peter about Jackie's miscarriage. It's just a very clunky plot device to build another far-fetched storyline on...and of course, Toyah and Peter will inevitably split. Corrie couples are no longer permitted to stay together and experience a stable period of happiness. As you say though, Peter and Toyah never really seemed suited. I think partly the problem was they met and became a couple off-screen, so viewers missed seeing the build-up of their relationship...

Peter and Carla are like Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

I really dislike Peter, such a snake.

If Toyah and Carla were going to stay on the Street, one storyline might be that Peter and Toyah stick together, but with the constant possibility of a split because of Carla. Couples can have charisma without actually being a romantic couple. Len, Rita and Elsie managed it for years. In fact, that would be much more interesting than Peter and Carla giving in to their feelings. Just the same could be said of Peter and Leanne, who equally have great charisma and she is also bringing up their son. However, I don't think Carla will be long on the Street, and I'm almost certain Toyah will leave with Eva. Peter's character is the main casualty at the moment and needs reviving.

Nice blog post, Emma! I can't keep track of who the parents of most of the children on the Street are any more.

Not sure why Peter would ever get together with Toyah, other than deluding himself that he wants to settle down. And at her time in life and a background in counselling, why would Toyah take a risk with such an obvious bad boy? There would have needed to be strong physical attraction to get them together, some remnants of which would still be apparent. And are not! Couldn't they at least pretend to like each other now and then? Are the writers blind?

And the most burning question - is Peter vegan now?

Thank you for your comments everyone - food for thought.
Maggie Muggins, it’s Ruth not Emma who wrote the post. Thank you

I also am not enjoying this ridiculous storyline. I don't know why Toyah just wouldn't come clean to Peter - why why why?? There's no reason to keep that a secret!
Peter is more likely to leave her for lying about it than he would be for losing the baby.
Like a poster above said, it's a clunky plotline, and for me, makes no sense at all.

I think Carla and Peter are one of those couples who always find their way back to each other. Frankly they have too much passion to ignore. And from a writer's perspective, they get more out of this pairing because of all the drama, the danger, the chemistry and I think the actors portraying the characters of Carla and Peter are superb. They are quite similar in the way that they can be intense and very compelling to watch.

Toyah is such a nonfactor though. I would imagine that the end of her and Peter will be when Peter finds out that the surrogate lost the baby some time ago and that Toyah was happy to lie to him for the rest of their lives.

No worries Maggie.

Toyah and Peter don't even seem to like each other. It must be grinding for some people having to work with your partner day in/day out, but even so, they never seem to find some time for a dinner out, or for some cuddling, etc. which most couples try to do. Toyah has kept from Peter the fact that their biological child (the one in the surrogate's tummy) has DIED. I can't get over this basic fact. And Peter is not one bit curious about how the surrogate is doing. Never says, "I'm so excited about the baby, let's have the surrogate over for tea, what colour should we paint the baby's room, etc". Why am I surprised, though? After all, Eva has been walking around with a GIANT baby tummy for weeks now, and no one is the wiser except for Aiden. Leanne has NO IDEA about all this??? Can't wait for this storyline to wrap up.
