From Corrie knicker stitcher to award-winning playwright

Angie Freeman was one of my favourite characters on Coronation Street.  Back in the early 90s, Angie was brought into the show as a design student working at the factory with Mike Baldwin. I loved her because she had a bit of 'oomph' about her, a bit of class - and she also drank pints in the Rovers.

However, a "career woman" had no place in Coronation Street then. It barely tolerates them now. While Carla Connor now runs Underworld, back in Angie's day she had to play second fiddle to Mike and she wasn't happy about that. There was nothing else for her to do with her big ambitions but break free of the confines of the cobbles and go to work in that London.

The actress who played Angie is Deborah McAndrew and since leaving Coronation Street she's worked as an actress and has also become an award winning script writer.  Check out her website here.

Deborah has now written another play, all about the miners' strike.  It's been commissioned by the North Staffs Miners' Wives Action Group for a series of events to mark the 30th anniversary of the dispute.

Deborah's 45-minute production will play to Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils at six schools across the region before a one-off show for all ages at the Mitchell Memorial Theatre.  Read more about it here.

Digging In, with a screening of I Support My Dad, and a performance by the Florence Colliery Band, is at the Mitchell Memorial Theatre, Hanley, on Friday, June 26 at 7pm. Tickets are free but booking is required. Call 01782 409307 or visit mitchellartscentre.co.uk.

I loved the character of Angie the first time round. When they brought her back in the late 90s she had lost some of her spark though. If she came back now she'd probably end up working in the rovers and, having lived in London, would have to develop a nasty side where she tries to burn down the fact'ry out of spite before being revealed as the true owner of the rovers or something similar! - Micky
