Bring back the Battleaxe to Coronation Street

Coronation Street has always had a battleaxe. From Ena Sharples to Blanche Hunt, the soap battleaxe is a soap staple and Corrie has had some the best.

But where is the battleaxe now?  Since the sad passing of Maggie Jones and the on-screen death and funeral of Blanche, Corrie has been sadly lacking one of the very things that makes it so great.

We've got Yasmeen Nazir but she's not in the same league as the likes of Ena and Blanche.  Roy's mum Sylvia was a fine contender for the role but sadly Stephanie Cole left her role as Sylvia and there's no sign that I know of that she's likely to return.

Come on Corrie, bring back the battleaxe with her sharp tongue to put some bite back into the show.

Michael's Aunt Barbara would be great. I can see her now gossiping with Norris and passing remarks.

I'd love to see Lynda Baron move into the Street in a battleaxe role.

She was great playing Violet Carson in "The Road to Coronation Street", and I'm sure she'd excel at playing a modern-day Ena Sharples.

To give her a family connection in the Street, she could be Tim's mother or auntie - that way we could see her clash with Sally (only to become secretly fond of her later on).

Eileen is a harridan in the making. Though I think they have been trying to turn Tracy into a battle-axe without success. She remains plains nasty without the humour of a battleaxe.

I miss Sylvia. She had the stern authority of Ena and the caustic wit of Blanche. Yasmeen was good in her first few eps and seemed like a natural successor, but actually she's turned out to be nowhere near as powerful, authoritative or memorable as the other three golden girls mentioned in your blog post.

Please Stuart Blackburn - if not a new battleaxe, at the very least give our current crop of elder characters more screen time! :(

Gail might be a contender if she can locate her brain.

Is there such a thing as a male battleaxe or is that a contradiction in terms?

What you have instead of a male battleaxe is an old curmudgeon, like Percy Sugden or Uncle Albert and Norris is fast growing into one of them.

I know that Roy isn't capable of biting put-downs, but he has the authority and fixity of a battleaxe, albeit male. I could see Carla becoming quite the battleaxe as well if she sticks around.

I'd love to see Emily morph into a battleaxe; she'd be capable of some great zingers! :)

Emily is capable of some good zingers just as she is!
It really is a shame that Roy's mum left, she was brilliant.
However, as things stand now, I think everyone's leaving out Liz, who's trying to act younger than she is, but could easily slip into that role. She had Sarah scared out of her ponytail the other night.

I think with her controlling ways,Fiz has the makings of being a battleaxe. She gossips, quick to judge and keeps Tyrone on a short leash.
