Are we all ready for the arrival of more Nazirs? In addition to Kal and his dad we will also be meeting Kal's mother and his daughter in the next week or so. I think there is also a son to come as well.
I do like an injection of fresh characters into Corrie but it can be a difficult balancing act. Introduce a massive brood all at once (for example the Mortons, the Claytons or the Hopkins families) and viewers can struggle to take to them or even work out who they all are. Introduce them slowly and gradually and it can feel very drawn out and lacklustre.
The Nazir family have come in slowly with Kal being established as the main link. Putting him with Leanne also grounds them all as she is an established and popular character. However, the main stumbling block for me to overcome is that so far the Nazirs I have met are quite dull.
I like Jimi Mistry as an actor, I just find his character a bit dry with very few distinguishing features. Apparently there is more to him than meets the eye and hopefully the introduction of his children will spice things up a little. Kal's dad has made even less of an impact I'm afraid. I really do hope the introduction of a more satisfying family dynamic will help things along.
I always worry when there is a deluge of new characters. Coronation Street is already bulging at the seams so apart from worrying where the Nazir clan will live, it also makes me wonder which characters will be squeezed out to make way for this new family. We already complain that we don't see enough of the likes of Kirk and Beth, Jason and Eva and the older characters like Audrey and Deirdre.
I also hope the Corrie powers that be consult the history books as they prepare to introduce the latest in a long line of Weatherfield families. New families can have a significant impact on the overall tone of the show. We saw it in the 1970s when the Hopkins family took over the corner shop and left almost before the paint was dry on the signage. A decade later the Claytons left within months of their arrival despite dramatic doings with the popular Duckworths. And even though the Morton family had the lovely Michael Starke at the helm, there were just too many of them to get to grips with. Every time I saw them they seemed to have multiplied yet again.
So are you looking forward to the arrival of Kal's family? What are your views on how the powers that be have decided to introduce this latest Corrie clan?

Im looking foward to seeing this families interaction as long as corrie dont just make the family about Leannes past and there disaproval of it too much. Id like to see acceptance and this be a happy relationship. I like they havnt rammed kal in loads if storys, nice slow build up that now could take showing more of his character/personality so we can see what actually makes him tick, might spice up the leanne/kal chemistry. Kals dad is a bit dull, would hope the other family members might colour him up a bit....
No i'm not looking forward to them. As you said the cast is already too big and I don't think it's fair to squeeze the existing cast members out just so Stuart Blackburn can bring in his new ideas.
We might get one good character out of the lot of them. Eva came in with the Prices, wasn't much of character to start with and then blossomed. A lot is to do with the actor; Catherine T gives Eva a nice line in comedy and any new family should have someone like this in their midst. Kal's mother sounds like she might be sparky, but dullness is the kiss of death with Corrie fans. Look what happened to Stella.
So far, for me, I don't have any interest in Kal or Nazir, I'm not familiar with Jimi Mistry as an actor, but I don't like him with Leanne and Nazir us all but invisible.
I wonder if C.S. is going to give the women in Kal's life ( mother, daughter) all the personality and controversial story lines enough to make up for the men?
Has to be, as the family couldn't possibly remain as quiet as they are now or they will surely follow in the footsteps of the Mortons, Claytons, and Hopkins clans.
Considering I haven't been impressed by Kal or his father yet, I'm not looking forward to meeting the rest of the family. And I won't be happy if it's at the expense of other families. Yes, you need new characters once in a while but right now a whole new family doesn't feel needed.
The whole idea is that characters/families are brought in to bring about the changes that happen naturally in todays society instead of being stuck in a boring time loop of the past. If the writers do a good job there is room to build in some changes and characters to keep it fresh and real to todays society. Long lasting developed characters can generally hold there own when given good origional stories, they are also great to incorparate new characters. I tend not to dismiss new characters/families before most have even arrived, like many new ones in the past that now are wonderful regular parts of corrie. They all have to be developed before I pull em to bits...
So far, Dad is so undistinguished that no one can remember his name and he's been on for several months. Sharif? Said? Sinbad, no wait, wrong family. Kal is the most vanilla dish of bland ever, yet responsible mom Leanne, who stood by her husband through the worst of times, fell for him at hello. Now I'm not one for OTT characters, but characters should have some, well, character. These two just don't. However, other than that ridiculous triangle top hair-do, they are easy on the eyes. Maybe with a bit of family dynamic they'll perk up. Just wondering how that whole Gary and his daughter thing will go over, given that they were Army buddies. Not that I really care.
I do like Sharif, he seems like a bit of a buisness owner type of guy like Fred, Mike and Dev used to be.
I've said it before and I'll say it again--more Deidre!! And Eileen and Audrey--just about anyone but some of these new characters. I don't have anything against Kal but what would be wrong with working storylines around existing characters and talent? And enough bed hopping!
Sharif.... & Eileen!!! I can really see this as a long-term story line/arc should the Nazir family 'stick' with TPTB and the fans; can anyone else? From what I've seen so far, they could be really good together, the banter could be great! Everyone deserves that great love-of-a life-time and this could be Eileen's. I want to see it smack them both upside the head - damn it! (Crossing my fingers and placing my bet.)
