Chris Gascoyne to leave Coronation Street next year?

The Sun reports today say that Chris Gascoyne, who plays Peter Barlow, is set to leave Coronation Street.

The paper says that Chris wants to spend more time with his family and to embark on fresh acting ventures.

A spokesperson for Corrie responded to the claims with the statement: “Chris has signed a new one-year contract, which takes him to autumn 2014, and he is involved in some of the biggest storylines of the next 12 months. It is too early to comment beyond that.”

It wouldn't be surprising if Chris Gascoyne wanted to leave. He's one of the few excellent actors in Corrie and sure he wants to try out other roles. I hope they don't kill him off as it would be quite believable for him to come back at some point. Naturally, this news starts off a whole lot of rumours about characters' exits. Maybe Peter kills Tina in a drunken rage? I'll be very sorry to see him go although the character hasn't been quite the same since his return.

Agree with HD..I will miss Peter but his character has changed so much over the past year that there doesn't seem much for the actor to do. The 'nice' businessman Peter just doesn't seem right. Good luck to CG - hope to see him again - he'd make an excellent medieval villain.

I'd be gutted if it's true. I don't think they'd kill off a Barlow. They could always recast him if they need to but I hope he stays.

I too dont blame Chris Gasgoyle, he is a pretty good actor that wants to broaden his horizons and do something different. Unfortunately its the stale old has beans like Gail that hang on the gravy train. Perhaps he and new young enough to be his daughter Tina will run off together. He is someone I would deffo want to see the door left open for.

Am I the only one who reckons he'll jilt Carla at the altar, and say he loves Leanne instead?

Peter and Leanne had better chemistry than him and Carla.Peter and Leanne over him and Carla anyday.I hate Carla! IMO the bosses made a big mistake breaking up him and Leanne in the first place!

As for Tina,I think she'll just be a random fling, and won't mean anything to him.

Not good news for Corrie at all. Chris Gascoyne is an excellent actor and his portrayal of Peter Barlow over the years has been so convincing. I do love Peter with Carla, and this Peter/Tina storyline doesn't make sense to me but obviously, if the rumours are true then there is going to be a tragic ending there.

It's a bit of a concern that Corrie is losing some of the best actors. In one year they're losing Peter, Hayley, Stella, Gloria, Tina etc. Sadly I wouldn't be surprised to read that Alison King is leaving next. She has already said that she wants to do other projects.

Good luck to Chris though! I'm sure it must be very difficult for him being away from his family and it will be lovely for them to see more of him. He is a superb actor and I look forward to reading about his next project.

Say it isn't so! He is one of the best actors on the Street, not to mention being wonderful eye candy!

Crap.I really like Chris G as an actor. He did a great episode of Murdoch Mysteries and we were oh so excited.I don't blame him for leaving really but I will miss him. He's believable. I hope they do not kill him off. He came back before,so maybe again in the future.
I did prefer him with Leanne and Simon rather Carla. Having Peter play second fiddle to Carla at Underworld is ridiculous. The writers have made him lose his way, which is just silly and a waste. Well, good luck to him.

The new calm, serene and seemingly unflappable Peter Barlow was such a jolt and not quite believable. Very good actor and it would be a shame to lose him though I can see he would want to try different roles. Can't remember, has Peter even worn that wonderful worn leather jacket since his personality fairy visited...?

Good luck to Chris and heres hoping to see him in other projects. Perhaps this should really be the end of the Barlows now? Tracy is more and more ridiculous and Drear who perhaps should be the only survivor has been turned into a Loony Tune like Gail. For me he was ruined when he went off with Carla and became her lap dog.

I hate to see Chris leave, but he has left before and come back. My question is when are they going to get rid of that Mary, I thought she was suppose to leave a long time ago.

Agree Peter's character has been changed to much and not for the better. Peter is a bad boy and should remain as such if the story-lines are to be credible. Nevertheless I don't want him to leave - just get back on form with the script
