Coronation Street double episode review, Friday March 9

Congragulations were in order for geriatric Coronation Street sweethearts Rita and Dennis. The friends became engaged after they declared their love for each other when Dennis decided not to take the job in Birmingham as he'd miss Rita too much.

Good to see Philip Lowrie get a decent storyline for once - both the actor and his character have done little but smile benignly and twiddle their thumbs in the Rovers for months.  Norris was, predictably, put out but was mollified when Rita, rather touchingly, asked him to be her best man at the wedding and make a speech.

Neurotic Anne was foaming even more at the mouth after discovering that the contract Carla signed for her son Frank had disappeared and  she angrily accused Carla of stealing it so she could retain control of the factory - and also told this to the police.

Lewis got the sack from the Bistro after a £50 note went missing from the till, although he insisted his innocence. It later  transpired he was right - it was Eva who had taken it out of the till and left an IOU note which no-one had seen.  Lewis was hurt that even Audrey seemed to think he was guilty and, for once, snubbed her, hopping onto a bus, when she rushed over to apologise after finding out the truth.

Under questioning, Peter lied to the police that he had been at home all night on the night of Frank's murder but they had proof that he'd bought a bottle of whisky late that night.  But it was Carla whom the police arrested for the murder ...

Yes good to see Dennis get a storyline since he came back almost a year ago. I have just written to Phillip Lowrie telling him how much I enjoy his character.

What lovely, touching scenes we had last night between Rita & Dennis. The perfect counterpoint to the high drama going on around them.

Friday was action-packed! Loved all of it.

The actress who plays Frank's Mum (sorry can't recall her name) did a phenomenal job of distraught mother!

And, of course, I can't feel sorry for Carla because I've never liked her. I doubt she did it because she's too obvious a culprit, but I'm glad she's been arrested.

I hope Peter finally realizes that a relationship between two lushes is just futile. He should start thinking about his son.

As for Dennis and Rita .... awwww, LUV that storyline, although I hate Norris being such a damn sourpuss.

And I don't even mind the Karl & Sunita storyline. She certainly deserves better than Dev, although I doubt Karl is a good alternative.

The worst part for me was watching Eileen and Paul out fine-dining, while his wife had just scalded herself with boiling water. Those two really have no moral compass, and it's disappointing to see Eileen behave that way.

Thank goodness for the Rita/Dennis scenes. Fortunately, I was watching on my own so I could clap and cheer.

Gwen Taylor is an amazing actress and brilliant at comedy, so I hope somehow she stays in the soap.

I really don't care enough to be angry with Peter and Carla, and don't feel all that much for Lewis and Audrey.

It's just awful what they've done with the Alzheimer's story. There was a lot of debate on here about sympathy for the carer etc, but they've blown any sympathy out of the window. Paul wants to leave the restaurant but Eileen makes him stay, and says another week in her house 'sounds like a bonus.' If the idea was to make people feel nauseous, ok writers, you've done a grand job.

I have to agree with others' comments here!
Love the Dennis/Rita scenes, beautifully acted and very touching. Please don't let this tender story end in tears!
I'm increasingly uncomfortable with the Eileen/Paul storyline too. It is far too contrived. It does no favours for Eileen. Let's hope it ends soon.

Having previously said how wonderful I thought Gwent Taylor was as Ann, I thought she was just so OTT on Friday. Made me cringe. It was just far too theatrical for Corrie. .

The scenes between Rita and Dennis were beautifully done between two wonderful actors. I hope that this story will run and not end in tears.

As for Paul and Eileen - dreadful story. Cringeworthy. One of the worst in the history of the show. Right up there with the Mark/ Marcia where the powers that be have missed an opportunity to write such wonderful material - but again have failed miserably.... yuck, yuck, yuck!
