Corrie's first episode aired 9th December 1960. 51 years later, it's still here and it's still going strong, with three original characters still appearing (that's Ken, Dennis and Emily). So happy anniversary, Coronation Street!

emily isnt an original character, she didnt appear until 1961
I know :P but I class her as one as she appeared in the first year of episodes (between 9th Dec '60 - 9th Dec '61) Seems a shame not to give her a mention for her sticking to the show for so long :P
I would class her as an original, she appeared in Episode 15!
She actually first appeared in Episode 4 (21st December 1960) but played by a non-speaking extra and not Eileen Derbyshire and is therefore a creation of Tony Warren and thus, as Chewy says, an original character.
I would agree. Miss Nugent was written by Warren. Eileen Derbyshire has been playing Emily for over 50 years. I'd say that counts!
Happy birthday Corrie! To have 3 characters from the start in it is a great feat. Plus another 3 who've been in it for nearly 40 years. Wonderful show! :)
