Corrie's coercive control story to last another year

In this week's fab Inside Soap magazine there's a bit of news that sent a chill through this fan.  Geoff and Yasmeen's coercive control storyline is set to last another 12 months.

Yes, you read that right.

Shelley King, who plays Yasmeen, says: "It won't be physically brutal but mentally brutal, which is worse in a way. There are over one million women suffering every year from this kind of abuse.  It'll go on for about a year. Ian Bartholemew (who plays Geoff) and I have a responsibility to talk to people and create a believable, understandable and truth-based plot, and that is what we are doing."

Ugh, this storyline has me cringing.
I really don't think a strong woman like Yasmeen would let herself be drawn into this kind of situation.

That's the whole point! It can happen to anyone at anytime, strong women like Yasmeen included

Maybe, but it was bad enough having this issue for 2 years in the Archers, I don't think I can cope with Yazmeen going through it now. There are far too many issue-driven storylines as it is. Let's have some happiness for a change, and some of the classic Corrie humour.

Another year of creepy Geoff. Not looking forward to that.

I understand the need to raise awareness, but a year is a VERY long time on soap operas. For example, in the space of twelve months Liam died, Maria blamed Tony for Liam's death, Tony and Carla married, then Tony and Carla separated, then Tony got engaged to Maria! Also in twelve months Aidan went from sleeping with both Eva and Maria and owning the factory to losing the factory, losing both women and committing suicide. Twelve months is a long time for a very emotionally draining storyline.

Jeanie (anon): I too am just cringing at the thought of Geoff--he of the horrible little necklace and sickeningly ingratiating manner-- gradually gaining control over Yasmeen. But I'm guessing the long-drawn out time frame is necessary to make it believable. If he just started bossing her about, she'd send him packing. Instead he will steal away her control very insiduously--diminishing her self-confidence and freedom little by little. She may even, still have some happy times with him. That's how it works. It's only obvious to the audience because we've been forewarned. On a side note, though, the "prank" with the seeds that Geoff played on Brian, so gratuitous and mean-spirited, should have warned Yasmeen of the person he is.

The only thing that is giving me any satisfaction in this story is that it, at least, explains some of Tim's behavior. It seemed so weird when Geoff first came on the show and he seemed like such a nice normal guy to know that that father and son lived in the same community but never saw each other. Now we know why! And now we can understand why Tim had problems with raising Faye and why he himself was so messed up when he first came onto the street.

I’m so done with the nasty storylines. I likes Geoff. I wish the producers would reconsider ruining another decent character!

I hate that ITV are bending some characters out of shape just to shoehorn them into an "issue-driven" story line. Very lazy plot development.

Couldn't agree more. Will there be anyone left watching in the year it takes this story to 'develop'. I maintain they've got kids on work experience doing the writing now.
