Comedy Callum and his finger of doom

I don't know about you, but I'm going to be practising my Callum finger of doom today.   He is so much fun to watch. I think we need Roy to have a stern word with him and scare him off, as no one else seems able to tackle Callum. He is not that scary, come on folks, sort him out.

We've already noticed how camp he is and how his henchman has lovely nails.

He's a cartoon comedy villain. Here's Callum in his pre-Dog and Gun days as Captain Black in Captain Scarlet.

And he sported a lovely Power Ranger cardigan last night.

Every time this ridiculous character starts pointing his finger or throwing his 8 stone weight around, Frosty expects to see ZAP, BOOM, come up on the screen like in the Batman movies/comics.

Spot on, Flaming Nora! I laughed out loud in last nights episode when The Finger of Doom made an appearance. I thought the cardi was an elegant touch, too. Callum has the screen presence of a Teletubbie.

No FN, he is not fun to watch, he is a total embarrassment.

I cringe every time I see him - a villain he is not. Really bad casting there.

Captain Black was way, way more scarier!

But it's the fact he's so unscary and not villainou that makes him fun to watch - or do I mean laughable?

He is the non-villainous villain for sure, and your analysis of the character is brilliant.

Someone else on here pointed out that he seems like a middle-class kid who is scumming it with the Dog & Gun crowd, which also works as an interpretation.

He might not be the scariest card in the deck, but he's bright enough to know that the Platts are dysfunctional sitting ducks. Low-rent drama-mongers.

I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who laughed at the Finger of Doom. I though he looked like a kid playing cops and robbers, pretending his finger was a gun.

Yes, laughable would be nearer the mark.

It's just something about the way he speaks, the way he holds his mouth, all his actions, I don't know, it's like an actor trying to act tough and not pulling it off. Surely the mark of a good actor is that they come across as natural. As has been said, very bad casting there.

The actor who played Phelan was TRULY scary.

As was the guy who played the real Gavin. He would have made an awesome Callum.

And why did Nick let Callum take his phone away from him and stand there cowering like a scared kid? He's bigger than Callum.

Miscast, embarrassing, I cannot bear the character. Surely the actor must feel he is not playing into the role. Wooden as a garden post.

Like everyone else, the actor playing Callum has had his struggles:

His acting career began when, as a twelve-year old, he persuaded his mother to take him to an open audition held at Manchester Airport in 2003 for a film named Cheeky and followed this up soon afterwards with the television series Island at War. He became a full-time actor in 2007 and appeared in The Bill, The Royal, Accused, Doctors and Casualty. For the next couple of years, acting roles dried up and instead he was an estate agent, dry-stone waller and a waiter before hearing from an old contact and appearing in Our Girl. With a new agent, the part in Coronation Street soon followed. (Wiki)

He's probably just happy to have the part and taking direction.

My gut sense is that the character will end up fitting in, because he's mostly clean cut, good-looking, and not overly villainous or demonic.

I imagined Nick just out of the shot, shaking his head and laughing at the finger of doom, then swatting it away with a fishstick.

blame the director...and the writers for coming up with this drivel. Druggie and dealer..sure..and goes and works out in his spare time.

Hard to believe Kylie fell for this guy. She would have seen right through him, eaten him up and spit him out.

Remember when Kylie first returned to the Estate? Someone harassing Gemma stopped immediately and ran away, simply because Gemma let him know Kylie was Callum's ex. Seems laughable now...should be the other way around - Callum telling people, "Do you know who I am? I'm Kylie's ex!".

Callum strikes me as a guy who grew up with privilege. It's as if he's dealing drugs because he's too bored to go to Uni. I can totally imagine Kylie falling for the rich kid/bad boy. I also think it's what intimidates David. Callum is like the aristocrat in Jane Austen novels who swans in at opportune moments to upset the party, just because he can.
