CBC renews its Coronation Street license in Canada
There's good news for Coronation Street fans in Canada!
It says here that ITV Studios Global Entertainment has inked a multi-year deal with the Canadian public broadcaster CBC regarding the continued broadcast of Coronation Street.
CBC has been the Canadian home of Coronation Street since 1966. The new pact with ITVSGE sees Corrie continue to air exclusively on both CBC-TV and online, just one week after the U.K. broadcast.
CBC also scored the rights to air more than 8,000 previous episodes.
Greg Johnson, the executive VP of distribution for the Americas for ITV Studios Global Entertainment, said: “Coronation Street has been airing on CBC for almost 50 years, and we’re delighted to continue our long-standing partnership with CBC. This agreement will enable Coronation Street’s loyal Canadian fans to continue to enjoy all the action and drama of their favorite soap for years to come.”

The CBC would have a minor revolt on its hands if it didn't! We Cananadian Corrie fans are just that, fanatical!
That's right Olga! Cheersie from, Osoyoos, BC! 😎
Not sure the revolt would be all that minor.
Hmmm I wonder if they have plans to air the back episodes? That would be awesome!
Tvor, I was wondering that, too. I hope they do!
You're not kidding about the uproar we'd have if the CBC ever dropped Corrie! It would be hair rollers at dawn!
Tvor, I notice Flaming Nora mentions that CBC has scored the rights to air more than 8000 previous episodes. Not sure what that means - online? Airing usually refers to TV. I'd love some late night Classic Corrie on CBC, if that's what you mean! I'll do some digging and see if I can get more info.
OK, I just phoned the CBC and they don't even know what the "8000 previous episodes" means yet. This is very new news and the staff member I spoke to said they need to wait for the dust to settle and will know more in a week or two.
Corrie is now in the 8600 range of episodes, so that would be almost ALL the episodes ever made! Quite exciting if that's what it means.
Thanks, Flaming Nora for pointing us to that World Screen announcement.
I've heard they get tons of angry phone calls whenever they change the Corrie schedule for the Stanley Cup playoffs. I can't imagine what would happen if they decided not to renew the license!
Maybe it will be like 1981, when they re-broadcast all the episodes that were filmed in colour. That was such a treat, although I wished they had gone back even further. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Good news - and for the record, there were be a revolt of EPIC proportions if we didn't get our Corrie.
****Excellent****** a B-I-G thank you CBC from all your Canadian Corrie fans....
I'm reminded of when the wonderful Bill Cameron was anchoring the evening news in Toronto in the 1990s. He announced that the CBC had to reschedule some episodes of Coronation Street to accommodate scheduling other programming. He ended his announcement with an apology and said "Please don't hurt us."
Oh my, it has never even occurred to me that the CBC could ever lose the rights to Corrie, it's such a mainstay of the CBC lineup and a tradition for Canadian viewers. So... an uniformed ~WHEW~... I guess, glad to know that there will be no interruption in our Cobble-fix. We've been so spoiled - not only do we get nightly weekday episodes, as the UK has seen this week, we also get late night repeats & Sunday morning marathons of the week's shows! Thanks CBC!!
