John leaves Corrie in September after two years playing Karl and will go straight to playing consultant
neurosurgeon Guy Self in the BBC hospital dram, says What's On TV.
John said: "It's a complete change from scally to surgeon! I've never done medical drama before but I have quite a few medics in the family, so I've got loads of people to talk to. One of my good friends is John Collee, who is a doctor and a writer. He wrote Paper Mask, about a porter becoming a bogus doctor. He's set up a load of stuff for me - his brother's an anaesthetist and I can go in and see an operation."
He joked: "My mum was a nurse and always wanted me to be a doctor not an actor so finally half her wish has come true!"

very happy for excellent actor John Mitchie - he could have become a great long term character but instead the PTB choose to keep the am dram skills of Kate Ford on and on and on.............
I agree, he'll be a big loss to Corrie. He had the greatest potential of any of the Price clan. Such a shame they decided to turn him into a murderer...
Good for him that he has an immediate plan after leaving Corrie - no need to worry about his future. Also great that he has resources in his family and friends to prepare for the role. However, medical staff are notorious for not obtaining permission before allowing extraneous people to enter during surgery (i.e. knee replacement techs, medical implant salesmen). Let's pray that permission from the patient is actually obtained before John is allowed in to watch an operation.
Would he really need to study the medical profession when all he has to do is learn lines written in a script? I mean its great someone wants to put in research but is it likely he did a stint at a pub before coming into Corrie?
Corrie needs a few more "manly" men - Karl will be a big loss in that department. Most of the men on the street are so weedy.
Bring bag Big Jim I say!
Best of luck John Michie.
