Our editor Flaming Nora's nephew, Adam, has written for the Coronation Street Blog before. He once wrote Adam's Amazing Coronation Street Review of a Corrie episode. He's now very kindly done a review of the new Coronation Street computer game "The Mystery of the Missing Hotpot Recipe".
And so, it's over to Adam and his girlfriend Tina for their review of the new Corrie game. You can read Adam's blog here.
"The name of the game is self explanatory, Betty has lost her Hotpot recipe, and it is down to the player to find it. However, before you can rummage through iconic sets such as The Rovers Return and The Kabin, you must first help the proprietors find missing objects within their abodes.
In terms of visual and audible stimuli, the game is basic at best, with the only sounds being simple effects, such as tills clicking and if those don’t get monotonous the Coronation Street theme tune is played repetitively to a point of turning sounds off being a good idea to keep your sanity. Still photographs form the majority of visual effects, with character pictures floating in and out of vision during moments of conversation, which disappointingly aren’t aided by voice acting.
In terms of gameplay, you’ll spend a lot of your time finding hidden objects, or at least trying to, but the transition to varied mini-game puzzles and challenges is a welcome change, and prolongs the act of not tearing your hair out a little longer. We found there are two possible ways to play the game, you can be patient and hit the hint button whenever you can, this may not be a good idea, as it starts to play the Coronation Street theme tune yet again. Or, you can try feverously to find the hidden objects, hidden being an understatement, which will likely result in the player hitting the hint button anyway.
All in all, the game flows well, between written dialect and active gameplay. However, in gameplay it feels disjointed and unfinished. A good buy for any faithful Coronation Street fan, however be warned, unless you mute your sound, you’ll never listen to the Coronation Street theme tune with the same heart ever again".
