Coronation Street's Executive Producer, Kieran Roberts, has defended the soap for having characters who smoke.
Kieran told the Radio Times: "While we have a duty not to glamourise the habit, it would be realistic to see nobody smoking - but only a few regulars do." He added that the smoking ban in 2007 means characters such as Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride) tend to smoke outdoors now, for example in the new smoker's shelter in the back yard at the Rovers Return.

Its realistic to have some people smoking, quite a few smoke in Corrie, Diedre, Steve, Becky, Liz, Eddie Windbag Janis B etc. I dont think anyone smokes in EE or Emmerdale which is not really true to life.
The show uses smoking, eating, drinking scenes not for its own sake, but to draw out characters and to forward a storyline via dialogue. My favourite are the food scenes. I have to say Corrie has some of the best looking food and the Corrie characters the best eaters -- let's hear it for sausages, eggs, and chips. And a whole lotta tea to go with that!

Do English people ever eat salad or vegetables. Seems most of the food is fry-ups or grease type foods. Not very healthy and heart concious.
