Who will still be clattering across the cobbles in 2023?

What will the future bring for the good folk of Weatherfield? Well, we don't know. Far be it from this humble blogger to even begin to guess the twists and turns that lay ahead for the characters we love (and loathe).

Possibly the more interesting question to ponder is exactly how many of the current cast have the power or appeal to last another decade? Are there enough stories to be told about some of them or are we already reaching the end of the line?

Given increased longevity in society and barring illness, there's no reason why the likes of Rita, Emily and Dennis should not be still propping up the Rovers bar come 2023. There also has to be a strong possibility of glittering futures for the likes of Eileen, Gail, Fiz and Tyrone, Steve and Mich . . .err, maybe just Steve. Anna Windass has the makings of a good long-term character but the constant swapping between 'Soppy Anna' and 'Harridan Anna' is a little jarring and does her no favours. Likewise Leanne. Another decade of her contorting her face and stamping around small sets does not make for great drama. For me, Jane Danson shines as one of the programme's better actresses so it's odd that the producers keep her in this perpetual Peter/Nick loop.

I'm hoping that both Sally and Deirdre grow old disgracefully. After Dreary's woeful (but hilarious) handling of Roy's sleepwalking last week, I think it's safe to say that Mrs Barlow has a wonderful future ahead of her as a slightly barmy late middle aged woman. She is going to be fun to watch, especially if she morphs into her own mother.

Tracy and St Ella aside (I think we read too much about them on here), there are arguably a whole host of characters with a short shelf life. Think about it. Does anyone burst into raptures at the idea of Dev, Maria, any of the Armstrongs including FayE, Ryan, continuing in ever decreasing circles for another decade?

There is also the worry of post-Hayley Roy? Will the character carve out a new future for himself rather than stagger on as the remaining half of a great double act? Will the producers steer clear of teaming him up with Mary who seems to have become a much more likable character of late?

Which current residents do you think will still have the power to entertain us in 2023?

I think Eva could take an interesting turn were her saintly mother to leave the street and the Diva be left to carve her own niche. I've always loved how love/hate of a character she's been--I love her when she's comically complaining, but I hate her when she starts to poach men for her own survival and does things like ruin a wedding. Though Leanne and Nick aren't spectacular together, no reason to try and bust it up just because you want to have Bistro spawn, first.

But yeah. I'm hoping that Jimi Mistry's new character Kal catches the eye of Eva and they become some high-yet-working-class couple like Audrey and Alf, thinking they transcend the street. Maybe not as wise as the old couple, but definitely as fab.

Side note: who else is really a candidate for Kal to be coupled with, though? Eva seems to be the only single sex bomb left (Carla is taken, so is Tina). The producers have tried (and failed) to convince us that Tracy is sexy because she was able to nab Rob Donovan, but prison can play those tricks on a lad.

A lot can change in 10 years. Back in 2003, I thought the likes of Mike, Fred, the Duckies, Blanche would still be here today, but thus things change.

We don't know if Corrie will still be around. We hope it will but we never know.

I don't know about the older cast (Eileen Derbyshire will be 93, Barbara Knox will be 90), but I hope the likes of Anne Kirkbride, Helen Worth and Sally Dynevor will be there as well as Simon Gregson, Jane Danson, David Neilson and Chris Gascoyne.

For me it is going to be a sad day when all the older cast members are gone, that will be the end of the proper corrie for me sadly :( I know the show carried on after the departures of Ena, Albert, Annie, Elsie and the Ogdens, but when the time comes that Ken, Deirdre, Emily, Dennis, Audrey, Gail go there will be no more strong links with the past at all

Providing it's still on the air, I woujld expect to see characters like Sally, Gail, Steve, Deirdre, David, Tyrone, Fiz, Jason and Eileen still knocking about. I reckon Maria may still be around too, the perennial loser in love. Maybe she'll own the salon by then.

Oh what fun (and sadness) thinking about 10 years ahead on the street....I'd like to see Spider and Toyah ~ and their children running the health food store they own as a family! Also, shining brightly from the current cast, I agree Diedre could be a marvelous loose canon getting away with so much as she becomes more and more fed up. Also, Steve MacDonald.. the old boy will be just that, an old boy and good at it!~ Roy must stay.. his future is so uncertain..but I think he'll get the love he deserves and hopefully keep being that beautiful character. Who will be ruling the pub?? hmmm..... Crystal ball hopes that it's Fiz and Tyrone!~ .....

I very much agree with the comments above. I would hope to see Deirde, Gail, Sally, Steve, Roy, Eileen, Leanne, Peter, Carla, Fiz, Tyrone, Jason and David. I also really like Anna (on a good day) and I would like to see her remain for a while yet. Of the newer and younger characters, I really like Kylie and Eva but the two actresses may have moved on by then.

I can't really imagine the street without a 'Barlow', 'Platt', or 'Webster'. Fortunately Tyrone provides us with a nice wee link to the Duckworths.

I would definitely like for Roy, Deirdre, Eileen, Sally, Gail, Audrey to become the older generation and stay on the show. I would love for Fiz and Tyrone to be "the couple" for the street, and yes, Canadian Bacon Sarny, they should be running the Rovers!

It seems like a lot of the younger actors and actresses don't want to be tied to a show for much of their careers, but I do hope that characters like David, Jason, Leanne, Maria stick around, provided they get good writing.

I'd say just about anyone but Liz McDonald.

As a more sobering though, just think by then we'll have to put up with teenage Amy, Hope, Ruby, Joseph, Max, Simon and spawn of Satan/Skeletor Platt.

Plus Lidl and Aldi will be running their own rival grocery shops at either end of the street.

Max and Simon will be demanding to become daddys, Faye, Amy, Hope and Ruby will probably aready be pregnant from one night stands. Gail will still be pushing her mop around the Bistro but lets hope the Price family are but a very very distant memory.

Dare I hope that the misery that is Tracy Barlow will be gone by then? Hopefully she'll be taking the big dirt nap.

I would imagine that remaining cast members in 2023 will be:

Gail
Sally
Eileen
Audrey
Steve
Fiz
Tyrone
Anna
Mary
David
Jason
Kirk
Maria
Sophie
Eva (I'm hoping for great things from her)
Sean (I know, I know but A. Cotton will never leave!)
Michelle could drift along for another decade...

I have a feeling that Anne Kirkbride will not stay long and certain matters outside of the show re. other another cast member might be a large factor in this...

Hasn't Anne Kirkbride said that she finds working on the show "soul-destroying," and that she only remains because she gets on so well with Bill Roache and Kate Ford? And this despite the fact that we recently heard that the producer assured her that she'll always have a place in the show?

If Roache has to leave within the next year, perhaps Ms Kirkbride will have been long gone, and much missed, by 2023?

The bigger question is how many of the fans will still be watching? Soaps were popular in the days when media was limited. Channels are multiplying and show no signs of birth control. Now cheap and varied entertainment is in everyone's pocket. Corrie viewership has dwindled over the years and if the trend continues (no reason for it not to) viewership will be down a stubborn few. Add to that a few dodgy producers and weak performers within the next ten years... Okay I'll stop now.
