Platt fatigue

Quite a week in Weatherfield then and there has already been plenty of comment re the passing of Deirdre. I have to be totally honest now and say that the episodes didn't get to me in the way I had expected. There were lovely moments such as Audrey shepherding the grieving Barlows, Steve comforting Ken and Emily's distraught reaction. However the handing over of Deirdre's glasses and Bev's initial never-ending 'setting the scene' monologue were grating. As for the ghost of Deirdre blowing through the Rovers - please!

What really dragged down our visits to the cobbles this week though were the appearances of the Platt family. The Callum storyline has evolved into some hideous gift that keeps on giving. Just when you think the whole tedious, tortuous nonsense has spent itself, back it comes, rising like the undead. It's the zombie storyline of the Street.

With heavy eyes I watched as yet again, we watched the pale-as-lard, unconvincing Callum lurch across the pub floor, lurch across the cobbles, mumble something in a camp manner and shuffle off again. The dippy Sarah trails along in his shadow, bringing nowt to the party save for an inane smile and her non-Italiano influenced daughter.

The monotony has been slightly relieved by the return of the wonderful Paula Lane as Kylie, although the ginger rinse needs to go. If you're going to go that shade, then opt for Rita Red or don't bother. Kylie is a slice of joy but even she has found her brain addled by the desperate Platts and their nutty-as-a-fruitcake plans to get even with Manchester's ropiest drug dealer. It's time to put an end to this story once and for all. Little Max should pack his bags and hand himself in to Weatherfield Social Services. He should be begging them to remove him from that house.

Three cheers for the Michael though, who soon saw the light and extracted himself from the House of Idiot and is enjoying chuckles galore with an enlivened (well, she's made it from her house to the Bistro) Eileen. Not for Michael an evening of constant interruptions at number 8 from the Callum/Sarah/Bethany ensemble bursting through the door apropos nothing at all. No Audrey jammed by the foot of the stairs in her mac making the Audrey Noise. No elderly Uncle Nick and her from Emmerdale creaking into view. No Gail.

We are due a break from the Platts, if not a permanent one from Callum, in order that they can come back later in the year refreshed and with something new to say. As it stands, they are fast becoming the fast forward moment of every episode.

Callums' dresser should be sacked..he looks like a power ranger or better yet, one of Archie's pals - is he supposed to be intimidating? As if a mule would burst into someone's flat with a handful of blow waving it in the air..ridiculous writing..time for him to go.

Agree! Is there anyone left who cares about them? I couldn't be bothered to watch part 2 last night, dreadful contrived "trap", beyond boring.

Unfortunately to add to the fatique,The Platts' 'storylines' are now annoying interruptions from the emotional drama of Deirdre's death.
I am at the point where I wish with the exception of Audrey, the whole Platt family is axed because I think from their constant dragged out storylines, the writers don't know what to do with them anymore.

When Callum was listing off to Kylie all the terrible things he had done, I couldn't help but laugh because it was so unbelievable. The guy has backed down from every confrontation he's been in, even with Chesney. And his "death stare" is hilarious.

If the Callum/David/Max/Lylie storyline had been happening at a separate time from the Gail/Michael storyline then maybe they'd have been bearable. But having them all going on at the same time is just unbearable overkill. Please just end them both, let Kylie and David get on with putting their lives back together (I think they could be a brilliant couple) and give us something worth watching. Pleeeeeeze!!!

The Platt's need a break. Maybe Nick still in the bistro scenes and Audrey in the Salon. Give David, Kylie, the kids and Gail a holiday, maybe to Barbados to stay with Becky. As for Callum, send him back to the back alleys where he "supposedly" came from and pack Sarah and Bethany off to Milan.

I hope Michael stays with Eileen, perhaps just as friends, as they are funny together. Erica needs to go. The baby storyline involved two characters nobody really cares about. Sarah and Bethany are surely due back in Milan as soon as Tina O'Brien gets another acting job; she's been quite successful away from the Street so probably doesn't want to stay forever. Audrey needs a storyline totally separate from the family. She and Eileen could spend more time together. The real problem is Gail's character. The writers have turned her into a buffoon. She's not kooky, she's pathetic and far too involved in her children's love lives.

I couldn't agree more, this storyline has dragged on for months, the whole lot should be rested until after Christmas. Callum, Sarah and Bethany add nothing, I just want them gone. Please put Kylie in the Rovers though, it'd liven the place up and keep her ticking along whilst family based stories are rested.

I agree with every word. They became the fast forward moment for me months ago. I really like Kylie and Audrey and would happily watch scenes of the two of them in the salon, but the rest of the Platts bore me senseless at this point. Friday's episodes were a perfect case in point. The scenes at No.1 were well written, well acted and had a feeling of truth to them as Ken and Tracy talked about the funeral and the need to have it reflect Deirdre's wishes rather than their own. Then we had Callum et al. The contrast was grating and the story incredibly tiresome. It's only going to be worse on Monday when Deirdre's funeral will be interspersed with the vision of Bethany Platt crawling around after the world's least convincing bad boy. Irritating doesn't even begin to describe it.

100% agree re the Platt storyline. I also found a lot of the scenes around Deirdre's death contrived - the door blowing open scene was so cringe worthy I actually laughed (pretty sure that's not the reaction they were aiming for). In contrast to what most people seem to be saying I found much of the acting to be weak - particularly the actress playing Bev. I thought Emily's reaction was really touching though and Tracy's was believable too.

Oh, Clinkers, that was brilliant! While a die-hard Corrie fan myself, who watches every episode in full, no matter how lacking, who cannot agree with you when you put it that way? Funny and well-written. All true about the Platts! And during Deirdre's week. How very dare they.

Agree with every word David, well said.

The trouble with the Platts is that the writers seem to think that EACH of them needs a storyline all the time (with the exception of Audrey, who is worth more than the whole bunch of them together), and their stories also tend to drag on for months and months. Give them a rest, get rid of Callum, and move on please.
