CBC to air six episodes of Corrie weekly in Canada

As we know, ITV is going to be airing 6 episodes of Coronation Street and Canadians have been wondering if CBC would keep pace. Wonder no longer, Canucks. CBC today has announced that as of September 18, it will air Corrie six times a week, adding a second episode on Monday nights.

Now, there's a bit of confusion as to whether we will be caught up completely or not because earlier in the year we heard that the UK will be airing the sixth episode starting later this fall but in a recent releast, Producer Kate Oates said that it won't be until spring.

If it isn't going to be until spring, CBC would end up catching up so that there would be no delay or not much more than one episode delay on par with the UK broadcasts. (CBC is currently showing episodes 2 weeks behind the UK.) I can't really see that, can you? It seems too good to be true. Perhaps the correct rumour is the one about the autumn start to ITV's sixth episode. We'll keep Canadians up to date as we hear the news.

Edited to add: CBC replied to my tweet indicating that they will keep the 2 week delay due to distribution timelines. That says to me that ITV will start airing 6 episodes a week around the same time in September. I wonder if Ms. Oates' interview wasn't misconstrued with that major storyline she was talking about that will be aired next year. I guess we'll know closer to the date.

The Sunday morning omnibus of the week's episodes airs 8:00-11:00 a.m. (8:30-11:30 a.m. NT) beginning September 24.

CBC Canadian Corrie schedule changes

***ATTENTION CORONATION STREET FANS***

It's that time of year again, NHL Playoff time.
This just in from CBC:

Due to scheduling changes starting WEDNESDAY, April 12, Coronation Street on CBC will be seen at the following time per region:
11:30 AM North
3:00 PM B.C.
4:00 PM Toronto/Ottawa/Manitoba/Saskatchewan/Alberta
6:30 PM Quebec/Windsor
7:30 PM /8NT Maritimes and Newfoundland (no change)

The Sunday Corrie Catch-up remains unaffected (8:00-10:30 a.m. local time).

Coronation Street returns to its regular weeknight time of 7:30/8NT on June 19.

Missing Corrie Scenes found for Canadian Viewers

In Canada, Coronation Street airs on the network CBC every week night with a repeat omnibus on Sunday mornings. Most Canadians know that we're about two weeks behind the UK air dates for the show.  In the UK, on ITV, Coronation Street airs for one half hour per episode, with commercial ads at the start and end, and one break in the middle for ads. Just one. It seems astonishing to us North American viewers when network television breaks for ads every 5 to 8 minutes (it seems like more!). Coronation Street in the UK is filmed for the way ITV airs the show, sometimes with cliffhangers just before the mid show break.

In Canada, though, because of the extra ad breaks, there is too much Coronation Street to fit in 30 minutes. How do they fit it? CBC cuts out scenes or the last  bits of scenes. Many of us have been aware of this for years. If you watch Corrie through the week and again on the Sunday omnibus, you may see something on Sunday that you didn't see on the weekday episode. The reason for that is CBC doesn't have to fit the start and end show credits in for each half hour segment like they do through the week so there's a little more room though there are still things that stay missing.

That's why some of us are left scratching our collective heads in puzzlement, wondering how the storyline got from A to C. CBC cut has  out the B. There doesn't seem to be very much we can do about it but help is at hand.

There's a new YouTube channel that airs all the bits that were cut from the show each day. It's called Coronation Street Canada Extra. In the evening after the episode airs, or the next day, you can check it out and see what you missed and fill in all those B scenes. No more will we Canadians wonder how we got from A to C. I don't know if a concerted campaign of complaint all over social media can persuade CBC to show more Corrie and less advertising, because that advertising dollar is life's blood to tv stations

CBC news and schedule changes for Canadian fans

There's great news for Canadian Corrie fans!

CBC is going to air the ITV  special, a tribute to Jean Alexander and Hilda Ogden. The commemorative documentary episode will go out as part of CBC's festive schedule.  It will include accolades from many of the Coronation Street cast.

Hilda Ogden's Last Ta-Ra: A Tribute to Jean Alexander will air on CBC on Wednesday, December 28 at 8 p.m. following a regular broadcast of Coronation Street. (8:30 p.m. in Newfoundland).

(Don't forget, ITV will air Hilda Ogden's Last Ta Ra on December 20)

Next...

It's that time of year when the CBC starts airing an abundance of  Holiday programming and this affects the schedule for their regular programs including Coronation Street.

Here are the schedule changes for Coronation Street over the Holiday season:

Week of December 19: 
Monday Dec. 19: For all: One hour of Coronation Street from 7 p.m. (including the North feed, 7 p.m. MT)
Regular episodes for Tuesday, Dec. 20 and Wednesday, Dec. 21.
NO CORRIE on Thursday and Friday, December 22 and 23.

December 25, Christmas Day:
The Sunday omnibus will air at the normal 8 a.m. time except for Winnipeg/Regina and Vancouver when it will air at 7 a.m.
Week of December 26:
Coronation Street will air for one hour on Monday December 26 at 7 p.m.
The rest of the week as normal (meaning there will be an extra episode this week, reflected in the omnibus on January 1, airing at the normal 8 a.m. time)

Canadian Corrie schedule changes during the Olympics

It's that time of year again, folks. The Olympics are back on our screens and CBC has announced the schedule changes for Coronation Street.

For the week of August 1 - 5, there will be DOUBLE EPISODES aired. There doesn't appear to be an omnibus on Sunday, August 7 but you can catch up online. 

NO CORONATION STREET for the week of August 8 - 12 and August 15 - 19.

For the next two weeks, August 22 - 26 and August 29 - September 2, DOUBLE EPISODES of Coronation Street will be aired and we'll be back up to date.

The double episodes will be starting at 7 p.m. your local time EXCEPT for Friday, August 5 when Corrie will air early at 5 p.m. (but as always, check your local schedule to be sure)

Corrie is back to it's regular schedule the week of September 5 EXCEPT Wednesday, September 7, when Corrie airs LATE  at 11:30 p.m. ONLY due to the Paralympic programming.

New to Corrie? "Jump in there and get on with it!"

CBC in Canada has a great Facebook page for Coronation Street, called, naturally, Coronation Street on CBC.  Today they posted this great little video where their "Corrie"spondent, Mike Morrison, interviewed some of the cast to find out tips for people who are new viewers of Coronation Street. The best advice comes from William Roache, "Jump in there and get on with it".

Most people I know say the accent is the hardest thing to get past, at least at first. It's a stronger accent than the "received" BBC posh English accent, that's for sure in that it's more down to earth and every-day, if you see what I mean. It does take a bit of time to pick up the ear for it but if you watch for a few weeks, you will become attuned. I have to say, though, after watching for over 25 years, there are still times when I don't catch what was said, usually just a word or a phrase that was spoken too quickly.

Because the show has been on the air going on 56 years, you won't be able to catch up before starting to watch. Like any show, you will pick up the threads of the storylines and figure out the families before too long. There are also great books out there if you do want to read up on Corrie history, most of which are written by Daran Little, with two or three gems by our very own Glenda Young (Deirdre: A Life on Coronation Street and Norman Bates with a Briefcase: The Story of Richard Hillman just to name two) . Check out your library! Then pour yourself a cup of tea and get some dunkable biscuits and jump in!

Canada pays tribute to Tony Warren

Tony Warren's passing has made news all over the world and so it should. His creation is currently the longest running soap on television and the Guinness Book of Records says so! There are tributes pouring in, from the media and from fans. My social media pages and feeds are filled with it (mainly because at least half of my contacts and friends are Corrie fans!).

Last night on The National (our 10 o'clock news hour), CBC showed a two minute tribute to Mr. Warren. Their feature is online here. 

A fan that's featured on another CBC article and in the video from The National is Christine Warren (no relation!). You may know her from her wonderful website. It's filled with trivia, games and interviews. Christine was also instrumental in giving me a wonderful gift 10 years ago, a private visit to Granada studios to see the indoor and outdoor Corrie set.

There's a short clip of Christine speaking on the first clip but there's more from her tribute, and you can see that article and a video here.

Christine talks about her experience with Coronation Street, remembering when it first appeared.

"It was gritty and it was real. They were real people. They would get up in the morning and their hair would be in curlers. They looked like we did when we got up. It took off."

She speculates that Tony Warren was shocked that the show took off and became so huge, and probably remained surprised until he died.

CBC relates what most of us fans know. Tony was gay in a time where it was illegal and considered himself an outsider. That gave him the edge, when it came to observing people, listening to dialogue.

For me, Coronation Street changed my life as it has for many others. Because of my love for the show, it was one of the first things I searched for when I got online in the mid 1990s. That led me to an email list and later to a chat room. I made friends for life and even found a lovely man who I've married. I've travelled and stayed with friends I met online, I've visited the set in Manchester several times, mainly due to associations with other fans that had connections. I've met several of the actors because of a local group of fans that have organized special events here in Halifax and other fans/friends  in Manchester. I've taken part in a CBC documentary called Corrie Crazy. (watch that here on CBC's video site)

None of this would have been possible without Tony Warren's insistence on being allowed to write that first episode for Harry Elton in 1960. Tony's story was made into a BBC television movie called The Road to Coronation Street. That's available on DVD and very much worth watching.

Tony Warren will be missed but has left a legacy that will live on. As Christine says:

"He's left something behind that can't be matched"

Indeed.

CBC renews its Coronation Street license in Canada

There's good news for Coronation Street fans in Canada!

It says here that ITV Studios Global Entertainment has inked a multi-year deal with the Canadian public broadcaster CBC regarding the continued broadcast of Coronation Street.

CBC has been the Canadian home of Coronation Street since 1966. The new pact with ITVSGE sees Corrie continue to air exclusively on both CBC-TV and online, just one week after the U.K. broadcast.

CBC also scored the rights to air more than 8,000 previous episodes.

Greg Johnson, the executive VP of distribution for the Americas for ITV Studios Global Entertainment, said: “Coronation Street has been airing on CBC for almost 50 years, and we’re delighted to continue our long-standing partnership with CBC. This agreement will enable Coronation Street’s loyal Canadian fans to continue to enjoy all the action and drama of their favorite soap for years to come.”

Coronation Street in Canada now showing in UK timeline (almost)

Back in the bad old days, Coronation Street on Canadian screens was aired nearly a year behind the UK storylines. A couple of years ago, CBC (the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) caught up and we've been just about 2 weeks behind. Now, CBC is going to catch us up a little bit more. Canadian fans will be delighted to know that Corrie in Canada will be just a heady ONE WEEK behind the UK air dates.

On the week of September 29, check your local schedules. There will be two extra episodes on both Monday, September 29 and Tuesday, September 30. By the end of the week, we in Canada will be just one week behind the UK airdates.

The schedule is as follows:

CBC's listings don't go as far as the Sunday omnibus on October 5 but they will show the whole set of episodes, even if the start time is changed. Likely, it will start at the same time as usual in your local region.

Canadian Corrie schedule changes for World Cup

They're at it again. CBC has rescheduled Coronation Street during the world cup, weekdays between June 12 and July 13. Corrie will be airing in most time zones at 11:00 a.m. (11:30 Newfoundland).

Alberta and British Columbia get Corrie at 6:30 p.m. so it won't be as big a change there.

The Sunday omnibus will remain the same but as always, check your local listings!

Coronation Street CBC schedule changes for Canadian viewers

It's that time of year again folks - but Coronation Street will still be broadcast during the next few months of NHL ice hockey playoffs.

Starting Monday, May 6, in most regions, Corrie will be aired on CBC  at 3:00 p.m. with a rerun at 2:30 a.m. the next morning.

Those in the Atlantic time zone may still get Coronation Street at 7:30 in the evening as well. In Newfoundland, the wee hours rerun seems to be at 1:30 a.m. with the afternoon at 3:30 and evening at 8:00.

Edited to add: Just to further confuse the issue, it seems some regions are starting the early shift for Corrie from today. On CBC Halifax tonight, there was a scroll  that said we in the Atlantic time zone are going to 6:30 from May 1 to 10 then to 7:30.

Canadian Corrie Schedule Change for August 13

CBC SCHEDULE CHANGE: Check your local listings for Monday August 13. Coronation Street may be rescheduled to 1 p.m. due to tennis coverage in your area. It's definitely changed for Eastern Standard Time and points west but NOT for the Maritimes and eastward, at least according to the CBC website today. It appears to be just the one day.

CBC renews Coronation Street in Canada

Heads up for Canadian Corrie fans!

The news from the Toronto Star this morning is that your favourite game shows, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy are not coming back in the fall season but not to fear, Coronation Street isn't going anywhere.

While all the federal spending cuts have hit the news here this week, CBC is trimming and the game shows have very expensive license fees.

Spokesperson Christine Wilson, the director of content planning says: "Unofficially I can tell you Coronation Street is coming back. If it didn’t come back, something would happen on Parliament Hill."

She's probably right!

CBC in Canada: Schedule Changes for the next couple of months

No matter that they said we'd still get catch up during the NHL hockey playoffs, CBC is cutting back the extra episodes between April 11 and June 13 back to the old schedule of a half hour a day. This isn't so bad, though, because they'll continue the catch up once the NHL Stanley Cup is awarded and we'll be caught up by September.

So, According to this schedule, and doing some looking on the schedule grid for other time zones:

Starting Wednesday April 11 Coronation Street will be showing ½ hour episodes daily.

On Wednesday April 11 to Friday April 13, the program airs ½ hour only as follows:

In Windsor, ON at 5:30 p.m. local time
Most other Ontario and Quebec and Atlantic time zone has Corrie at the usual 6:30 p.m. time slot.

Newfoundland start time is 7:00 p.m.
In Man/Sask/Alta/MTN/BC/PTN at 1 p.m. local time


The midnight broadcast will also be ½ hour in length but may be delayed due to NHL playoff games. Please check the CBC Program Guide for more information.

All of this week's episodes will be seen in the Sunday, April 15 Omnibus broadcast at its regular time. This broadcast will be 3 ½ hours.

Coronation Street will air weeknights for ½ hour as follows:

In Windsor, ON at 5:30 p.m. local time
Most other Ontario and Quebec and Atlantic time zone has Corrie at the usual 6:30 p.m. time slot.
Newfoundland start time is 7:00 p.m.
In Man/Sask/Alta/MTN/BC/PTN at 1 p.m. local time


The midnight broadcast will also be ½ hour in length but may be delayed due to NHL playoff games. Please check the CBC Program Guide for more information.
Beginning April 22 and ending June 10, the Sunday omnibus edition will be 2-1/2 hours in length, airing at its regular time.

CBC Update on catching up to the UK timeline

I saw a news headline in my inbox tonight regarding the CBC double episode "catch up" that we're seeing. The article is dated about a month ago but it's still relevant. People have been asking how long CBC is going to continue to catch up and how much will they catch up?

This article states that CBC will play catch up until they're pretty much up to date. We don't know if we'll be 100% caught up as the CBC might keep it about a week or so behind the ITV episodes in case of a technical glitch. Fair enough! There's also mention of not suspending Corrie anymore during sporting events, though they may play with the schedule and air it at a different time. “Even if it doesn’t play in its normal timeslot we’ll put it in another timeslot,”

Also fair enough. Most people have vcrs or dvrs these days and CBC also carries it online. They estimate we should be caught up by September. CBC posts the week's episodes on Mondays following the airing of the Sunday omnibus in all regions so you can always catch it there as well. Kudos to CBC for this! An hour a day for the next 8 or 9 months is a lot to keep up with but it's worth it!

Canadian CBC renews Corrie

According to this little news tidbit, CBC in Canada has renewed its contract with ITV to be able to air Coronation Street in Canada with a multi-year contract. (That news site may require a login which showed when I first looked at it but then showed the whole article the next time so your mileage may vary).

They have a quote from Tony Warren who says: “I am delighted to hear of the new Canadian deal especially as the unsung hero of the show, Harry Elton, who was the original executive producer and a Canadian, had the foresight to commission the programme.”

They're also calling it Canada's "most popular drama serial" and indeed, Corrie is one of CBC's top rated shows. In spite of their purported "All Canadian" schedule, there are still a small number of non-Canuck items on the air which bring in the bucks and Corrie has always been one of their best-sellers.

Now with the double episodes, we're catching up at a rate of a month per month, or a week per week if you want. Current episodes this week originally aired in late February 2011 which makes us 8 months behind. We were over 10 months behind at the start of September, so that's great progress!

Big news for Canadian Corrie fans

I couldn't be grinning any harder than this at the moment! There's big, BIG news for Canadian Coronation Street fans who have been griping for years about the CBC being so far behind the UK broadcasts - 10 months behind as of the current week!

According to CBC's newly announced fall schedule, they will be showing 1 hour of Corrie every weeknight in an effort to catch up. There is no word yet on how this affects the Sunday omnibus and no word to say how long the double episodes will be airing but this is very good news, thank you CBC.

Check  your schedules closer to September for details in  your area and we'll blog it here, too, when we know more.

By the way, this will probably put the 50th anniversary week shows forward from the very end of September to about the middle of the month on Canadian screens.

Corrie Crazy in Canada

There's a documentary being made in Canada about Coronation Street and Canadian fans. It's called Corrie Crazy and it will be shown on CBC on December 9, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary (even though Canadians won't see ITV's anniversary storylines on CBC until the fall in 2011!!! Tsk!). Over the last few weeks, I and a couple of friends of mine were all filmed in conjunction with this documentary. Naturally, I've blogged about my experiences. Deborah Cyr has also sent along some comments and photos and Mark Grant spent the day on board his Canadian Naval vessel with the crew and host of the documentary. He had so much to tell that he's got his own blog post here!

Canadian fans needed for Corrie documentary

CBC’s Corrie 50th Anniversary special is looking for Canadian Corrie fans with interesting stories about how Corrie has affected their lives, or their relationships. They are also looking for fans who think they might not be “typical” Corrie fans – like the young man with the Iron Maiden T-shirt they met at the British Isles Show in Toronto.
