I'm enjoying this new character on Coronation Street, Californian Pete. We've never had such a laid-back, calm and collected fella on Corrie before and I kinda like it. He's a little bit 'whatever', he's reasonable, he listens and he cares. He doesn't drink, he doesn't fight, he doesn't go around breaking hearts. Oh hang on, yes, he does. He broke little Simon's heart last night.
So, this Californian Pete bloke, what do you think then? Should Corrie bring back the old Peter Barlow and out this imposter or do you want him to stay?
The official Coronation Street website at itv.com/corrie has an interview with Chris Gascoyne about the choice Peter has to make. Will he go or will he stay? He'll stay, of course, it's a no-brainer. The actor's just come back after a five month break in a Buddhist retreat, it's highly unlikely he'll leave again so soon.

For a bloke knocking 50 he is a pretty good looking bloke, enhanced by the "Californian" tan of course. He has lost weight and had his teeth done and doesnt seem to be constantly puffing on a fag. Of course he wont be leaving any time soon and I doubt if any of us would want him to - the old baggage Cruella s another story - but Frosty would like to know what they were living on for their six months in the wonderful but expensive City of Angels?? They have no green cards so couldnt get any kind of decent job, and they dont have much savings I wouldnt have thought. Its a mystery.
Well, Frosty hits it yet again... see that's the problem with the writing these days -- half-assed. If we don't get at least an idea of HOW these two will actually make a life in the expensive US then we've got some notion of the stakes involved here. At the moment, it's too thin --the story asks that we suspend our disbelief and go all in and CARE whether Peter goes or stays... what's he actually going TO?? Just to be with Carla? What's Carla going to??? We're not TOLD/ We're not shown so we DON"T really know and we don't CARE. Bad story planning...
Is that Phil Collinson gone now? I guess we're still seeing some of the dregs of his "leadership"...
:-(
I don't like it. There is something sinister about him now! I think the old Peter is working away behind all the serenity and sun tan. It's only a matter of time before he snaps.
I have always had a soft spot for Peter but I especially like him now. It's refreshing to see him more relaxed. He seems to get better looking the older he gets and I'm certainly a fan of his new facial hair and smart black winter coats. He must be one of the best-looking men on the programme!
I'd love to see Peter staying in Weatherfield permanently to raise Simon. I'm not sure if I'd like him to stay with Carla though... I think he needs to be by himself for a bit while he adjusts to being a father again.
I just wish the producers had used the break to draw a line under the whole alchoholic saga... yet, they're not back for two minutes and Carla is drinking again. Boring!
He's just plain creepy! And those dazzling white teeth just don't ring true in Weatherfield!
Love the new beard and tanned look! Not entirely convinced by the laid-back demeanour - I agree, he's going to snap!
I've also been wondering what on earth they've been living on. Surely neither the factory nor the bookies would be paying enough dividends to support a non-active lifestyle in LA. And I can't imagine that Carla's friend would be putting them up for nothing for so long.-NN
I'm loving the new laid-back, serene Barlow but we all know it can't last. The constant carping from Leanne and the inability of Carla to deal with life on the Street has to push him over the edge eventually.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
I do like this new and improved, caring, supportive Peter with Carla but I don't like the way Carla's being portrayed this week. She has swapped roles with Peter and it feels like a plot device to ensure Peter and Leanne get back together.
Without a soap character becoming stressed, their patience tried, or any obstacle to overcome, then there's no conflict. Without conflict there can be no drama.
I think Peter will eventually crack, and the smooth persona will take a back seat, even if it's only for a short time.
Looks like a stoner.
How is it that Michelle and Rob didn't notice a bottle of screech in one of the filing cabinet drawers? Carla's character has been ruined by the writers. It's the old 'invasion of the personality snatchers again. Peter..all cool-hand Luke and Carla a sobbing mess. Sure. If the writers want to save this character, they'd better do a 180 PDQ and bring back the old Carla so she can kick Peter and his botoxed brow to the curb.
The leopard's spots are still there under that tan, lurking. It won't be long. Previously the booze exacerbated the innate volatility, but it's still there.
Maybe Peter & Carla found a residual hippie commune to hang out in, which could attempt to explain how they supported themselves, but I doubt that the rehab program that supposedly worked such wonders on Peter's personality came that cheap.
It's hard to suspend disbelief when we keep falling into the giant plot holes!
"Peter..all cool-hand Luke"
LOL! Ha ha! Good one. I like that.
Better keep him away from any pickled eggs on the Rover's bar then.
NO NO NO! He needs to be creeping about down a ginnel in an overcoat flicking a fag into a gutter not being all zen and gong jogging. Jogging!
What's with everybody and all this 'ginnelling' all of a sudden?
I never liked Peter before and like him even less now.
And the flamin' beard's got to go.
He looks like George Michael's brother!!! And too smug by far!!
Watching Peter come back from a stint in the US with my girls one quoted " The case of the body snatchers c/- the triffids" who is this new Peter!! He comes over creepy sounds like he was brain washed over there = I feel sorry for Carla think she should say here's the door Peter off you go and she should take over the reigns of the factory and get stuck in..
Carla seemed pretty much the same...(until she went all OTT bitchy, selfish and out of character) with the whole "I didn't miss anyone." However Peter is a whole other kettle of fish..he seems like he doesn't give a shit about anything anymore, spaced out almost. He always cared about Carla's ordeal, but when she was explaining why she'd started drinking again he seemed very blase about it. Out of character I thought. The old Peter would have known why she was finding it hard to be at home already, not having to have it spelled out for him. Shame on you, writers.
