Bill Roache criticised for revealing Anne Kirkbride's alcoholism

Bill Roache has been criticised by Coronation Street fans today. He's making headlines in the Daily Mail after speaking out about Anne Kirkbride, who played his on-screen wife Deirdre Barlow.  He claims that Anne Kirkbride was, according to the Mail, "an alcoholic battling depression in the months before her death last year and had been on medication 'all her life'.

The Mail goes on to say that Bill explained the reason Anne was absent from Corrie before she died was that bosses had given her three months to pull herself together. However, she succumbed to cancer before she returned.

He also disclosed how she would become 'weepy and wailing' during filming causing delays. He said her emotional state left her co-stars confused and led them to believe her anti-depressants had stopped working.

The Mail quote Bill Roache from earlier this week when he attended the Royal Television Awards. Coronation Street lost out on Best Soap to Emmerdale at the awards do.

An ITV spokesman has commented: 'We would never discuss somebody's health issues'.
And frankly, I personally think Bill Roache should not have done so either.
