5 reasons why Phelan is Corrie's best baddie in years

1. Comedy monster

Eileen might think he's cuddly and charming, but Anna knows the truth.  As do we... and having us fans and viewers knowing the truth about him, makes him irresistible to watch.  This picture in particular made me blog about Pat Phelan as the Nosferatu of Coronation Street. What a monster!

2. He's not ALL bad

He's not all bad. Remember when he chucked his chips in preparation for jumping in front of the car that Carla was hanging onto when the Bistro baddies drove off the Street?  It was only Kevin's intervention pushing Phelan out of the way of the speeding car that stopped him from getting knocked down and killed.

3. He's a Grafter
Saw what you like about his working practices but at least he works, and damn hard too.

4.  We all know the truth

Just like with Richard Hillman, the viewers and fans are "in the know". We all know what Phelan's up to. Kevin and Michael know he's not to be trusted but just as with Norris harking on about Hillman, no-one believes them. Not yet anyroad.

5. He's actually a bit cuddly

He's an alpha male with a cuddly side which makes him very watchable indeed.

I would add that he's being acted very well too.

Well acted but I can do without the latest vein of nastyness and I forwarded through all Phelan scenes on Friday and will continue to do so.

Although I agree Phelan is a great villain, he lacks the depth (so far) that makes a brilliant one. Tony Gordon strangely but genuinely cared for Maria although he arranged her husband's murder, and Richard Hillman was driven by the need for wealth because his mother struggled financially. Phelan's fun to watch in the same way that Jez Quigley was, but a little bit panto.

I agree with Humpty Dumpty. I love Phelan and yes, he's an excellent baddie and good fun to watch. But the other two villains HD mentioned showed a vulnerable side and so far Phelan doesn't seem to have one.

I don't think Phelan is vulnerable to anything or anybody - 100% pure villain - all he needs is one of those dark twirly mustaches

Phelan better not mess with Jason or he'll have his dad to contend with. That's a battle I'd enjoy, whoever won!

I don't think Phelan would win in a war against Tony! But Tony is more of a physical threat. Phelan can be that but he's much more manipulative. Still, he wouldn't be trying it on like he is if tony was around.

Got to agree with the first poster above - the number one reason he's so good is due to Connor McIntyre.

Sadly not, it would seem, with the news that Tony Stewart is to die. I'd hoped he'd come back and take on the Yard after Jason leaves.

Excellent actor but this character seems to be more psychopath than anything else and thus, his "feelings" and "intentions" can only be false/put on. Anything "nice" he may appear to be doing for or with anyone can only be a ploy with an ulterior motive!
