William Roache says he's slept with 1,000 women, including Pat Phoenix

Coronation Street actor William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow, has been interviewed by Piers Morgan for the Life Stories TV programme and today the Mirror has the transcript from some of the interview in their paper today.

Bill claims he has bedded (and I think we all know that means "has had sex with") up to 1,000 women and that includes his Corrie co-star Pat Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner.  Thankfully there's no mention of bedding Anne Kirkbride, who plays his on-screen wife Deirdre, as otherwise that would have been A Very Wrong Thing.

The Mirror piece is worth a look because it has some wonderful old pictures from Corrie of Ken and his girlfriends with a full listing of them all too.

Among the things we didn't really want to know about the man who's been in our homes for decades as Ken Barlow, but which the Mirror reports, is that his insatiable appetite for sex earned him the nickname “C**k Roache” among other members of the Corrie cast.

Talking about his one-night stand with Pat Phoenix, Bill says:  “It was just a one-off. It was just something that happened one night when we were together. We weren’t right for each other. She invited me round to her flat and we had a few drinks, then one thing led to another. At that time, she had a reputation and I had a reputation, and she felt we should meet, as it were. It just happened.”

There's more to the interview of course and I recommend you follow that link to the Mirror and have a good read.

OH DEAR! This is a bit grim. I mean, i know he was young once but...... *shudder*

Is this a joke?

If they're not making half this up, then he sounds like a real tosser. Kind of glad I've not got a ticket to see him on his Canadian tour after all.

What a shame to hear such a confession. I did respect Bill Roache, now, I don't know. Bedding Pat Phoenix? What the hell?! He had a reputation as the king of soap actors, he's totally ruined it. Good photos on the other hand and I will watch the interview, but it is a shame to read this. He's remorseful now, but still...

And the fact he takes delight in saying it. Golly gosh!

I liked Bill Roache too. But I find it undignified and indiscreet to be saying how many people he's slept with. It's like, why does he think other people want to know? That it needs to be in the public domain? What happened to privacy?

Aren't his kids going to read it and go 'eww'. I would if it was my father saying that in public.

Bill Roache is a long time supporter of the Conservative Party (currently ruining a National Health Service/society/education system/welfare system near you) and a friend of Neil & Christine Hamilton.

That he is also a promiscuous philanderer should come as no surprise at all.

Agree with Billy above. I find the news about his sex life slightly more tasteful than when we found out he'd got into bed with the Tories.

I'm with you, Tvor. I gave him a miss on his Canadian tour because he's not really very interesting, but now he's still uninteresting and a real tosser.

Hey Bill!! News flash...nobody gives a shit how many women you 'bedded'. How embarassing for his sons...what a loser.

WOW! I didn't think he was that type of guy. This has really changed my opinion of him.

STD's anyone?

Just when I didn't think there could be a new low concerning so called actors and Coronation Street yet here it is. How unfortunate and creepy.

Has he got a book to promote or sommat?

"tosser"
"promiscuous philanderer"
"he's still uninteresting"
"unfortunate and creepy"

- I was holding my breath there. Thank god no one used the 'b' word.

Don't see what the problem is. The man's 80 next month and, crikey, if you can't tell it like it is at that age, when can you? The character he played was hardly blemish-free. So many famous people have had the facts distorted after their death, maybe he thought he should clear it up before he goes. And it's not like your Grandpa announcing it over Sunday dinner. He does sound quite remorseful.

Do people actually care what he's been up to? :-/

Its by time this useless waste of space was axed from the show, he contributes nothing now except that he has been in it since the start. Thats the reason he is still in it because of being in it since the beginning. Hopefully a producer comes along and axes Ken Barlow, then Mr. Roache will not think he is above the show just because he has survived it so many years. He probably thinks he is king of the show, and can say and do whatever he likes. Did he not think about his sons and rest of his family by coming out with all this crap. I am sure Linus doesn't want to read about how his father cheated on his mother many times. Really disgraceful. Not that he cares much, he is currently dating a young weather girl, clearly got over his wife's passing eh? But she is probably just hoping to be left alot of money in his will. I hope Bill is axed, then when he is living the rest of his life without his favourite easy job, he can realise that all his deceit has caught up with him.

It sounds cruel, but is the truth. Other men would be bad mouthed for this, Bill shouldnt be different just cause he is an actor and in a popular soap.

Seems like the character has spliced into the actor? I've seen him in several interviews and have always been struck by how much of a big deal he seems to think he is, well beyond the confidence of that many year on the same show. I have to say that I've always felt he was creepy.

Right on Bill! Mick Jagger of the cobbles. He's still got it going on with that hair. This totally makes sense. He was a star throughout the swingin' 60's and the sultry, pre-AIDS days of the 70's. I would have asked him if he'd ever got it on with Rod Stewart or David Bowie through their bisexual days. Tantric sex with Sting and Trudy? Now I wish I did forked out the cash to see him if there is a Q &A part of the show. Hey if there is anyone going to one of the Cannuck shows, feel free to ask him my questions above, no charge, lol!

Can't believe some of the hate shown here. And you call yourselves fans of the show!!!

And Billy Biblick - there are many, many promiscuous types on the left. Your comments were ridiculous.

The Russelll Brand of Corrie. I find it rather sad that a man can only make himself seem interesting but saying she shagged loads of women. Do agree that William Roach is a pretty poor complaicent ac-tor these days but he has a job for life I am afraid.

He is a pig and should be ashamed of himself.

I agree with some of the other posters both he and Diedre should be dropped from the show. I'm sick of the pair of them!

Bungalow Bill has certainly attracted even more attention to himself.
Saw him 'taking part' in a few quizes some time ago. His main contribution was,'mmmmm.' and 'yes', agreeing with other actor's answers.
Take him off the Street now.

Shame he now caught Emma Jesson in his web. I did like her.

Amazed to see some of attacks here from the main bloggers, especially Flaming Nora a.k.a Glenda Young, who is employed by ITV on a freelance basis to write about Corrie. Do your employers know that you're stabbing another of their staff in the back in this way, Glenda?

"Do your employers know that you're stabbing another of their staff in the back in this way, Glenda?"

Where are you posting from - some outclave of a forgotten 1970's communist Soviet state, where no opinion other than that controlled and monitored by the ruling elite is allowed?
- Surely even "Ken" would vehemently disagree with your POV.

One of the problems of writing this successful fan site are the comments left by nutters. I delete most of them but feel I should respond to this one. If anyone has a problem with me, please email me and we'll take this off-line, not spoil things for fans who come here to read about Corrie. Yes, I do write freelance for ITV occassionaly and yes I do have my own free will and opinion to write what I want about Corrie, where I want. And rather than be anonymous, please have the guts to stand by your criticism of me by putting your own name on your comments. Cheers.

"...And rather than be anonymous, please have the guts to stand by your criticism of me by putting your own name on your comments. Cheers."

Heck, non-stop attacks against Flaming Nora these recent weeks - there's only one accusation left isn't there?
Just admit it Glenda - you killed Frank as well, didn't you?

- Anyway, couldn't agree more; and now you've touched upon the subject, anonymous style posting is something that always bugs the hell out of me on this site. It really, really does!

Can the 'anonymous' option be disabled?

It's not that someone posting as say 'Freddie the Frog' still can't be identified, rather it helps everyone else see where a poster is coming from.

For instance - further down the site one poster has accused another of being a racist - for using the word 'clone' about a black character/actress.

Because the accused poster has a name and is a regular poster, it's clear that poster is nothing of the sort, because we can detect their style/leanings over many posts. That's the reason for disabling the 'anonymous' option. It helps to see where someone is coming from and the point they are trying to make.

So, can the 'anonymous' option to be disabled - yes?

How about setting up one of those polls on it, see what everyone else thinks?

Glenda Young said...

Danny, thanks for your support ;-)

During the last spate of troll comments a few months ago I thought often about disabling the anonymous posting option but it means people then have to have a blogger or wordpress or typepad account and not everyone wants to sign up for that and it's unfair, I feel, to ask people to do that just to leave a comment. I do appreciate those who don't post anonymously as it feels like more of a community on here though and I do take your point seriously.
