More and more lately, whenever I see Julie and Brian on screen, I feel like I'm watching the embodiment of the spirits of Mavis and Derek Wilton, a classic Corrie couple in the 80s and 90s.
It's not so much that they're exactly like them, but their antics and attitudes put me in mind. I think Brian is closer to Derek than Julie is to Mavis but together, there's a lot to warrant it. Read more about that over here.

I think Brian is a bit OTT. He's funny but needs to tone it down ever so slightly.
I find the aspect of Julie looking in awe at Brian's odd comments like Mavis used to do. Brian and Julie follow UFOs, Mavis and Derek followed gnomes. There are similarities. Eileen plays the role Rita had - rolling eyes, sarcastic etc.
I like Julie - she's a free and gentle spirit.
Brian is okay - but watching him eat is truly revolting.

No he tries too hard. The PTB realise that the show is so crime heavy and have had to inject comedy but they've injected it so ridiculously slapstick that the character of Brian is stupid. Totally unbelievable as a headmaster of a local primary school. If he was, I wouldn't want my children going there. He's an idiot. When Kylie and him are in conversation she is the one that speaks more sense and comes accross as the more intelligent one - and hey that's saying something. Another big example of how this programme can get it wrong.
Looking at Fred's photo under this post made me think that Brian is meant to be the new big, loveable, odd man. Thing is, Fred was a gentleman and subtle with his humour. Wacky but still believable. Brian needs to channel that!
Agree with Beth, Brian is just too OTT and stuffing his fat three chinned face with food in almost every scene is becoming quite revolting and newsflash writers its not comedy. He needs to be likeable and so far I dont find him so, just an annoying buffoon.
Brian is more like Reg Holdsworth in his farcial OTT comedy acting. Julie is very high camp but beleivable so i think she was better when she was not with Brian.
Frosty, I always thought Derek was a buffoon as well.
Brian is more like Reg Holdsworth because their characters play to the gallery - too big for modern TV. Actually, I think Brian and Julie could turn in to 'Terry and June'. The comedy with Derek (and Norris)comes from the little man desperate to be taken seriously. The TPTB are in danger of doing to Brian what they did to Becky.
Well, I suppose if the actor was rail thin, nowt would be said, but because he's overweight, attention has to be called to his double chin? Eileen also has a double chin but you don't see any comments about her.Becky was thin to the point of anorexia but was always seen swilling beer or some alcoholic beverage and didn't put on any weight at all...same with Kylie and David. Eileen has a double chin too and watching her scenes with Paul are verging on embarassing but that's accepted? C'mon.
Oh c'mon - a sloppy eater is a sloppy eater and Brian IS a sloppy eater!! Fat or thin, imagine sitting across the table watching that?? Like those people who chew with their mouths open. Blech!
