Er....why?
ANOTHER gay storyline in the works? WHY???????
Can't have them, can we?
Why, indeed.
I'm looking forward to seeing Dennis Tanner myself. I love a good ne'er do well!
So if Ted comes back (and we know Marcus is coming back) is that six gay characters? Let me count:
1. Sophie
2. Sian
3. Sean
4. Marcus
5. Todd
6. Ted (if he returns, I hope he does, I miss him)
Is this detrimental to the show? Gay characters have been underrepresented for so long or have, worse still, been badly written gay stereotypes (cue Sean). Surely it's time for a change. Is it overrepresentation or is it long overdue or should we even care?
You can bring in pretty well whoever you like... I just ask that the writers develop and portray them in an interesting way that allows them to advance a compelling story line that takes the rest of us somewhere...unlike the two missing Barlow sons that came out of nowhere and went nowhere...
I think the high percentage of gays on one very small street isn't reflective of true demographics.
If you're going to add to the list, don't forget Ken's grandson, James, who's going to make another appearance soon.
Personally, i could care less as long as, as one anonymous commenter said, the storyline and characters are written well
At least the gay characters, new and old, are pleasant people to have around. Compare them to our new straight neighbors, Tracy and Kylie. Vile and more vile. Makes me want to bat for the other team.
I'm not bothered either as long as the storylines and characters are entertaining. Yes, where's Ted by the way? I miss Ted too!
Over-representation and indicative of tired storylines. Corrie only seems to have two basic storylines these days - gays and serial killers. No wonder the viewing figures are half what they were twenty years ago.
Tvor and Seapenguin; agree totally. Don't care thruppence ha'penny about sexual orientation, I just want good stories. At least this shows Todd hasn't been a subject of Corrienaesia like Christian and Daniel.
And isn't it a bit judgemental to assume there will be a gay story line attached to Todd's return, rather than a son coming home to his family after the carnage of the tram crash?
Dolly Tubb: It's not judgemental - the quote in the press on his return was "Phil is aware the show has a lot of gay viewers and feels there should be more characters they can identify with" so we know what to expect. Todd's original "coming out" storyline was new, different and very well done - but the programme is being swamped with storylines at the moment about gay people, serial killers and extra-marital affairs and it's getting repetative and dull. The John Stape storyline is only interesting at the moment because it's been turned into a black comedy.
Todd is a very likeable character whether he is gay or straight which is refreshing for a change.
I also miss Ted he was a voice of reason.
Yes, Todd is a better character for drama than Sean. I'd love Ted to return but it doesn't seem to be on the cards, does it?
Viewing figures have halved from twenty years ago because they've halved across the board, on all channels. People watch Freeview and Sky now, which they (mostly) didn't have in 1991.
Can't really see how anyone can say we are being 'swamped' with stories about gays and serial killers...Sean is just there as usual...no swamping...Sain and Sophie...nothing really gay about their stories at the moment..two non-stories...were being 'swamped'?
John is in hospital and hasn't appeared on screen in almost two weeks...who else is a serial killer? What we ARE being 'swamped' with is that awful cow Tracy Barlow!
