Nasty award of the week: Owen Armstrong

This is one award that couldn't wait until the weekend. I really haven't enjoyed much of Corrie this week and Owen Armstrong is the reason why, for the biggest part, though not the only part.

Corrie seems to have been all nasty, all the time this week, starting off with Peter moaning and griping, Steve and Lloyd falling out, Steve and Becky whinging and David ultimately causing Maria to leave the salon. (Which is silly considering the stick she's had to put up with from him over the years. Last straw, I suppose!)

But the biggest culprit has been Owen who was just horrible every time he was on screen and you can read more about it over here.

I didnt enjoy yesterdays episodes much at all. Hard to find a senior detective taking Owen so seriously and all this rubbish with Dev is becoming almost unwatchable. If he turned up at the police station demanding a returned package was sent to Forensics I suspect he would be charged for wasting police time. How contrived was the scene with Carla just arriving in the pub when Maria was looking for another job. I hate to say this but the acting was poor as well, as far as Dev, Steve and Becky were concerned, just OTT and not credible.

Owen isn't nasty, he gave Eileen a chance after she gave him the money back, then Eileen decided to go slag him off to Dev and Sunita, I don't blame him for reporting her to the police

He did it out of spite and made sure to shred any evidence of fiddling first just in case. It wasn't necessary, it was petty. If he'd wanted the police involved, he'd have done it from the start.

Owen is a loathesome little toad. And most folk do seem to have been in a bad mood this week, it's true. Apart from Sunita, who has been just lovely lately.

I feel obliged to point out, however, since you accused him of it, that Peter neither moaned or griped in the slightest this week. In the two scenes he had on Monday, before jetting off on holiday, he was actually in a better mood than he's been in for weeks. It was the week before that his mood hit rock bottom. ;)

Owen will get his when the factory floor falls through revealing Colin's body...hopefully.

What I don't understand why Owen isn't facing charges. Wasn't the tram crash ultimately started by a gas leak at the Joinery, one that was the result of shoddy parts and/or workmanship? He was the contractor and responsible. How does he get to be so nasty to Dev, Sunita & Norris when he was the one who caused the damage? Weatherfield needs better detectives.

Maybe in another twist of logic, they'll pair up Owen & Tracy. They totally deserve each other.

Yeah, Tracy likes psychopathic builders...

Agree completely, Tvor. My mum said on Thursday, "I don't want to watch people being horrible all the time", how true. Your blog post about Owen the bully is 100% spot-on. Why does Corrie have to keep introducing these characters? It does seem as though they're hellbent on turning it into Eastenders.

I did enjoy David lording it over Maria actually. The girl is so stupid in her choice of men that I'm surprised she isn't being lambasted by feminists as a bad role model for young girls - which she certainly is.

I dont know about Maria being lambasted by feminists but I think child protection should be informed that little Le-am just seems to have disappeared. Who is looking after him whilst she becomes Carla Connor's escort/chief photocopier?

I didn't enjoy this week. Two different storylines about the theft of cash coming to a head in the same week seems careless or poor judgement, if deliberate.

Offering Maria the "office job" did seem very contrived. It would be nice to see "Audrey's" suffer as a business, so David and Audrey get their comeuppance, but I guess that won't happen. A business that required 4 stylists 6 months ago will manage fine with a 70 yr old and a newly qualified trainee.

I'd say it was deliberate, the stories seem like they were supposed to mirror each other, they even intersected (If Eileen had never mentioned Owen's accounting to Sunita, Eileen would have a nice clean record now)

Including "poor acting" and Dev in the same sentence seems hardly necessary. Its beyond me why Dev has not sold out to someone else long ago. His every appearance reminds me that I am watching a script being (badly)acted.

Its a similar problem with Owen. The character is two dimensional with no redeeming features at all. At this rate who is going to employ him?

Owen is far too sly and manipulative for my liking- I hate all these little schemes of his and the way he bosses his daughters around, thinking he runs their lives. What Eileen did was wrong, but Owen's done far worse. I agree with all the comments on here about the Dev storyline- as a character he's got no substance whatsoever and Jimmi Harkishin's acting redefines wooden.

I can't really fault them for contriving to give Maria a new job. It was all because of Kym Marsh's unexected early maternity leave that htey had to do this so i would give them a bit of leeway this time.

Sorry peeps, I've removed some comments about the Maria/rape storyline. Sexual assualt has no place in soap. I'm not going to be blogging anything about this storyline and am going to, as far as this blog's concnered, ignore the storyline.

Well like it or not this story IS coming up in Coronation Street and viewers have the right to discuss it.

Yikes, Corrie last week was very poor indeed and I hate it when they, the powers that be take it that we, the followers, are idiots!. What? Carla and Maria are now bosom buddies, errm, after all their shenanigans, you now want us to do a complete u turn and forget all the other story lines that were quite massive at the time?!
Are we really supposed to believe tht 5k is meant to be the start of the end of Dev and Sunita's problems? That a casino 'happened' to be opening in Weatherfield of all places (on a monday) and giving out FREE chips and Steve, woweeee WON, what luck (!).

Don't even get me started on Owen who is more like Rumplestlilskin. It doesn't seem as though he's been on the street more than 5 minutes and he's everywhere.

As for the up coming Maria/ rape story - that's not family viewing. I know it's it tragicly happens and is a very hard hitting story. Just not what I watch Corrie for!

I can't wait for the Kabin to open for some 'normal' banter. It's just too .... I don't know.... just not Corrie right now!
