50 years of Coronation Street: the (very) unofficial story

We've already mentioned the (very) unofficial Coronation Street book that's coming out for Corrie's 50th later this year. Well, Corrie fans and blog readers, ooh I am excited... we're going to have one of these books to win in a competition right here on the blog in a couple of weeks time.

More information on the book has come through today to say that this unofficial book will reveal scintillating Street secrets  including:

How The Street, unknown to many, was weeks away from going under during a crippling Equity strike of 1961/62.

The truth behind the regime of producer Brian (“Axeman”) Park and whether or not Thelma Barlow (Mavis Riley) resigned in protest at the killing off of Derek Wilton (played by Peter Baldwin).

How chaos and confusion attended the Street’s switchover to colour in 1969, with a trip to the Lake District for the first non-monochrome episode rendered a farce by mix-ups over both colour stock and the start date of colour transmissions.

The horrific and ultimately tragic decline of Jennifer Moss, original cast member and mainstay until 1974, who was unable to deal with her fame.

The full story behind why Tony Warren received a creator’s credit in the programme but – for many years – no financial remuneration.

The sometimes bizarre pressures on Street producers – including the one who had to pull an actress aside to ask her if she could start wearing deodorant.

Those interviewed for the book are too numerous to mention but they do include William Roache (Ken Barlow), John Finch, Daran Little, Adele Rose, Bill Kenwright, David Liddiment, Brian Park, Geoff Hinsliff (Don Brennan), John Stevenson, Alan Rothwell (David Barlow) and Carolyn Reynolds.

So, keep your eyes on the blog for a great competition coming soon to win a copy of this new Corrie book!

OMG, unbelievable that they put Michelle's face on the front cover...

The word verification for this comment is "crocke" -- it is a crock that she's on the cover.

Will this contest be open to residents outside the UK?

"pull an actress aside to ask her if she could start wearing deodorant"

I think I know who that was. I once read that Margi Clarke was largely hated on the set of Corrie, due to her appalling personal hygiene. Apparently she reeked.

Who put that lame tart Michelle's photo on the centre front? That's just plain wrong on so many levels that it flabbers my ghast... Heads should roll. Start with hers.... please...

What (or who) has this actress got that she's still even in the cast? It's a mystery to our household.

It's a mystery to all career actors who see a shameless wannabe reality TV contestant get a part on Corrie.

I cannot believe that Kym Marsh's face is on the front cove with Corrie icons like Hilda and Mike Baldwin! She hasnt been in it five minutes and is not a popular character irrespective what the production team seem to think. So many others more deserving, jack and vera, even liz or fiz or even roy or hailey anyone but Michelle!!
