Sad news for fans of Gary Windass's mate Quinny, today. The Sunday People reveal that he'll be killed off by a Taliban bomb in Afghanistan later this year while saving Gary's life.
Gary then agonises over whether to keep the pact that if one of them dies the surviving soldier will speak to the victims family face-to-face and reveal what happened. Viewers will see Gary telling his mum: "Quinny saved my life. People are saying I was the hero for surviving but if it hadn't been for Quinny I wouldn't be here. He was the real hero."
A Coronation Street insider told the paper: "This will be harrowing stuff. The realities of war in Afghanistan will be vividly brought home to the viewers. We hope our portrayal of the war and its consequences will be realistic and sensitive at the same time."

I liked Quinny, but this is a good thing to do, its the on;y way they can potray a war death without killing Gary
I think they've done this whole thing really well.
that poor family first his brother now quinny-aw i know it happens all the time though will be very emotional
I also think this story has bee done very well indeed. I was on a train this time last year and some soldiers got on and sat in the seat in front of me. It was clear from their conversation they were still going through training and their talk was of being bad lads at school, a history of ASBOs and how the army was their last resort of getting a job and any kind of decent life. And that's when their talk turned to Afghanistan and what it would bring, they were going out there within weeks. Every time I see this story on Corrie I think of those young lads and actually wonder if they're still alive...
I agree that this is a story which has worked really well. Mikey North is a good actor (and nice to look at!!) and Gary has developed into a good, well-rounded character, very different to the one we first saw. He has grown up and takes more responsibility now. In fact, the whole Windass family has developed really well and I hope they stay for some time to come.
BTW, how old is the character of Quinny? I'm sure he mentioned some time ago that he was 20 but the guy who plays him is in his mid-30s (and is a professional boxer I believe).
Films about conflicts in Iraq or Afghanistan do not do well at the box office or on TV.
Viewers do not want to be reminded of war, at least not till they are long part history.
From personal experince coronation street have not done this story line well at all. My husband has just returned from Afganistan and what us wives, girlfriends and mothers go through is no comparison. They have took the storyline over the top and the characters do not portray it well. It is a hard storyline to nail and i doubt any soap could do it well as it is too much of a personal experince.
