England's boxing team captain joins Corrie

Stephen Bell captained the England boxing team at the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and, it says here that he's joining Coronation Street.

Stephen will turn up for the first day of his new job with the souvenirs of a tough weekend on his face. Bell failed in his bid to win the Commonwealth featherweight title on Saturday’s bill in Newcastle, after he was stopped in the seventh round with a cut over his left eye. The cut required five stitches and he had a black eye for good measure, which is likely to mean a busy time in the make-up room when he arrives at Granada Studios.

“I’m playing the role of a squaddie,” said Bell, who has also acted in Shameless. “They knew I was boxing this weekend, but I hope they won’t be too upset.”
