Roy and Cathy set a wedding date in Coronation Street

Roy and Cathy are going to name the date for the wedding, says Inside Soap magazine today.

However, when they announce it to their friends on Coronation Street, Tyrone starts to wonder if Roy really does want to get wed.

This week we'll see Cathy deal with Alex's dad, Nigel (played by Little Voice creator Jim Cartwright).  This leads to Alex telling Roy he wants to move away to Scotland and Roy takes him there in the Woody. However, Roy's car breaks down on the way to Inverness and Cathy rescues Roy with the help of Kevin Webster.

Tyrone then detects a frosty atmosphere between Roy and Cathy and reaches out to Roy to talk to him about his engagement to Cathy.  Roy is adamant he loves Cathy and surprises her when he suggests they set the date for the wedding.  But is he sure about his decision?

Should Roy and Cathy get married? What do you think?

I do like the 2 together, however I really don't want to see Roy rush to get married, I think Cathy would be a bit hesitant also considering what she has recently found out about her husband and Alex.

No. At least not for a long while; surely it is all a bit hasty for the Roy we know and love. Cathy comes with baggage, not only that at home which would stem from psychological problems, but there is Alex to whom she defers much too often. Giving in to his needs and wants because she feels sorry for him in relation to his Mum,she expects too much of Roy and I am sorry to see that he is not as adamant as before. I cannot see how it works for him in any way, it is all about Cathy and Alex. Selfish they are, I say, selfish!

No. The longer this gets put off the better, surely someone better will come along for Roy.
As Abercrombie says Cathy has too much baggage. What's worse is that she doesn't do a thing to get a handle on her problems and just brings them into her relationship with Roy, who is too kind to put his foot down.

I haven't taken to Cathy, not out of loyalty to Hayley. She just doesn't work for me. I want Roy to be happy but that doesn't mean getting married again. He could become involved in his community and then find love a couple of years down the line. As affairs aren't going to be a feature of their marriage, the writers are making Alex the bone of contention. The business with the flats is so contrived. Auntie Cathy - or is she his step-mother now?- would be better occupied finding him supported accommodation in a housing association.

I agree with Humpty, I just don't see it working. I have never been too sure about Cathy and the directions they have taken her character haven't helped. Roy needs another person who is more like him. He and Hayley both had their issues and understood each other.

Doesn't work for me sadly. Their relationship seems a little too shoe-horned in. :(

Can't take to Cathy either and definitely not with Roy. I hope they don't get married. In fact I'd rather she went to Scotland with Alex.

Yuk. Ever since Alex arrived on the scene I think the pair of them are not suitable for Roy at all. I'd love to see the back of them both!

Yes I agree - at first I was trying hard to be generous, but I realize now that it was misplaced - it would probably be better if Roy was on his own and Cathy & Alex could go to Scotland - maybe, if need be, they could come back in a couple of months, maybe not. It all depends on the way the soap is going - right now I don't think anybody knows. Everything appears to be shoehorned in at the last moment.

I am *thrilled* about the wedding....loved Hayley...but...sadly....that storyline is well over and life...does go on.....

Roy didn't know Hayley that well either... He proposed to her the night they arrived home from Amsterdam, from memory???

Cathy might work as a dear friend, but not as a girlfriend and certainly not a wife. As other readers have mentioned, she's far too selfish; it's all about what Roy can do for her and Alex and I don't see what she brings to the equation other than companionship, and frankly Roy has plenty of friends already.

No matter whom they chose for Roy, they're going to have baggage/secrets. At least we know what Cathy's are.
I agree though, that this is a lot to put on Roy, who's too kind to be firm about it.

Humpty, completely agree with all of your comments. Why is Alex Cathy's responsibility? Why isn't his mother helping out?
Whatever happened to Cathy's lovely big house?
I don't want Roy and Cathy to get married - she has far too much baggage.

Dunno how old Cathy is supposed to be, but I'm guessing mid fifties? No-one of that age is baggage free. It's impossible to be, unless she's spent her life wrapped up in cotton wool. Roy, has his own baggage too which he has to live with, namely his mum

@Anonymous 14:21. I disagree. It's normal for people in their fifties to have a past but most middle aged people have dealt with their baggage or, at least, made peace with it and Cathy hasn't.
Even with psychological counseling hoarding is a serious problem that doesn't easily go away and she's not getting any. It's typical of hoarders to move on to other people's homes or buy new property and start accumulating again. Doesn't that sound like Cathy's behavior? Roy will be living in the middle of mounds of junk with Alex and Cathy and pushing everyone away in no time if he marries her now.
She's already making Roy slip back into his shell by making him share her baggage. Where's the man who regularly went out dancing wirth Mary? When is the last time he went over to see Fizz or Chesney or they brought their little ones over?

I disagree. Roy hasn't had counselling for the treatment by his mother as a child. Counselling isn't for everyone. I see no evidence of Cathy hoarding stuff in Roy's flat. Also I don't recall Cathy ever stopping Roy from doing any of those activities you mentioned. That's down to the script writers not including these in story lines

@Anonymous 11:41. Roy hasn't gotten counseling for his childhood trauma but he has obviously made peace with it which is the other possibility I mentioned. And even if he hadn't, what of it? Does it mean he has to add to his troubles and doesn't deserve better?
I agree completely that my perception of Cathy is down to the writers but since this is a show I can only go by what the writers have the characters do or not do.
A middle aged hoarder who filled an entire house to capacity, will remain a hoarder without treatment. She may not have started bringing junk into Roy's home yet, but how many people do you know who are supposed to be temporarily a guest in someone's flat while they sort out their living situation, turn around and have their nephew move in too within months? Hoarding isn't just about accumulating objects, when they're limited in that direction, hoarders simply go overboard in other ways. That's what Cathy is doing.
If the writers wanted us to think of her as a balanced, interesting woman, they'd have made her act like one. They haven't, so she looks like more trouble than she's worth. It doesn't mean her character can't ever be written differently. Corrie has people turning on a dime even within a few episodes.

You need to take a step back. You're taking this far too seriously. I've never psycho analysed Corrie characters before. I take it at face value and just watch it. Just enjoy it for what it is. P.S. It's not real!
