Corrie producer: More shops and a park for Weatherfield

Coronation Street producer Kate Oates has given a teaser of things to come when the set is extended on our favourite show.

She tells What's on TV this week that there are going to be more shops, a park, a precinct and more places for characters to act out their storylines.

Construction is currently under way, with work due to be completed in Spring 2018.

Kate revealed to What's On TV: ‘There will be a couple of new businesses and we’re going to have a little park area, so not everything will happen at the Red Rec. Sometimes we say in the story office that if Maxine hadn’t died, where would people go to think, because it’s Maxine’s bench where people have their pensive moments – so they’ll have somewhere else for a pensive moment. It’s all going to go beyond Victoria Court.

“You want precincts where people can gather. There may be another eatery with a different kind vibe – we’ve already got the café and the bistro.”

Kate added: “It’s nice to see a community feel, and it does well for social dynamics if you’ve got people who were friends who are now colleagues or someone is someone’s boss. It always adds a nice energy.”

You can watch the very short video interview below.

A coffee house would be nice. (One with Liz in charge would be nicer.) Just coffee, plain and fancy, and maybe a pastry basket, so it wouldn't be a conflict with Roys or the bistro. A couch and a few plush chairs would make a nice place to think, chat, meet a client or have a teen date without alcohol or the lovely Weatherfield weather. Would it make money? Sure. Coffee's mostly water.

Alarm bells are ringing for me - more locations, more characters. Oh dear. Coupled with stories for story sake (such as the Mayor story line. I mean, in Britain we don't elect mayors of borough councils!). My beloved Corrie seems to be in decline.

Sorry, but yes we do. Here in Salford, where I live, and where Weatherfield is supposed to be based we elected Paul Sennett as mayor on 7/5/16. Greater Manchester also has an elected mayor in Andy Burnham

Ooops, sorry for typo. Name should be Paul Dennett not Sennett
