Over the 25 years I've been watching, and judging from older video I've seen, it's always had it's good stuff and bad/boring stuff. In my mind, it has to move with the times and I don't think it would last if it was still the way it was 30 or 40 years ago. Society changes and you want viewers to see that on screen so they can identify with it, mostly at least. I mean, we don't want to identify with serial killers, of course. There have always been deaths, murders, weddings, affairs and "issue" storylines. Perhaps 5 episodes a week is too many and the cast is too big, so big that many characters don't get a look in for weeks or even months while others are the "flavour of the month" and are overused at times. I certainly agree with critics about that.
Anyway. As always, it's just my opinion and I still love Corrie as much as I ever did. Back to the topic of the post. For the last month of the year, we see Tracy up to her old tricks, Steve sinking even further into depression (one of the year's most powerful stories along with Hayley's death and Roy's grief. Both storylines performed by top, absolutely amazing actors). Gary and Alya are in danger of becoming Romeo and Juliet if their families' reactions are anything to go on. Sofa-gate lightened the mood but it was one of the only shining lights. Kylie was dragged down by Callum and David chucked her out. Gavin isn't really who he said he was and we can all see that Michael's heart might not take the shock.

I think 2014 has been patchy. When it's been good it's been very, very good and when it's been bad it's been horrid! Some great characters and performances and some I'd happily never see again. Some storylines drag on forever while others peter out and disappear.
Some actors dominate which prevents others having the chance to shine. While it's on too often and features too many regular cast members it's still the best of its genre and I still love it dearly.
I like it too. :)
Sometimes I think viewers can be in danger of looking at the older episodes through rose tinted spectacles.
I take on board the comments about some cast members dominating but ultimately it's all about creative license and the writers, I suppose, will write for who they can write for.
Also, a lot of the older cast members probably wouldn't be able to carry major storylines now it's on 5 times a week.
Not forgetting that back in the "good old" golden days, Corrie was only on twice a week - Mondays and Wednesdays for the total of an hour, now its 3 times a week with double episodes which is quantity not quality. But society has changed and things that we would have found rivetting 20 or 30 years ago would not have the same impact today. However, I do think there is far too much loose sex these days - the tart Erica as an example, rather than build up to relationships.
On the whole I think the standards remain reasonably high despite the number of episodes each week. At least it is still considerably better than East Enders, though I think with Steve's storyline there is a danger of it falling into the EE trap of running it on for too long. As for Frosty's rather prudish attitude to Erica, surely we are all different and some people just want the sex....!
