Coronation Street double episode review, Monday 13th May

Whatever viewers feel about Stella, you have to hand it to her that she does not suffer from job snobbery. 'It's a job, it pays money, money's what we need.'  Up go the sleeves, on goes the pinny and out comes the mop. Stella sets about her new job at the bistro with energy and  determination until Gail, realising that Stella is using her mop, stops her. A letter G for Gail is there on the mop handle. Gail appears genuinely upset by her mop being in the wrong hands. Oh dear. This scene was pantomime and poor pantomime at that. The predictable clash of the mothers-in-law just did not work. We need quality humour, not fobbing off with what verges on the ridiculous.

Understandably David is anxious that the baby may inherit epilepsy. So much so that his rice crispies have been ignored and allowed to go soggy. This anxiety though feels like a plot device, through which we are presented with a variety of worried looks and anxious glances between Nick and Kylie.which serves as a   reminder that the baby could be Nick's. At some point, surely, somehow or other, Leanne will find out that Nick and Kylie slept together. David, later, asks Nick and Leanne to look after his children if he and  Kylie should both die.

So finally Roy decides that he will read the letter from St John Cropper, the father who deserted him all those years ago. Before he decided to read it, Sylvia, conveyor of so many good lines, adds another to her repertoire. She speaks to Hayley about Roy and whether he's going to read the letter. 'You have to suffer while he has his existentialist crisis!' Read it now!' orders Hayley. Roy replies, 'What happened to don't do anything you don't want to?' Fair point Royston. After he's read it, Roy's conclusion is as generous as it's possible to be. He says, It's an old man seeking some form of redemption' and this statement is followed by a determination to get in touch with Mr Cropper senior. But he's moved - he did so a year ago. Roy states that he will find him.

Of course, it's been coming for ages. Clear for us all to see, including Izzie, is that Gary is attracted to Tina. During the meeting in the pub to remember Quinnie, Gary explains his situation and shows the photos of both Tina and Izzie to his mates. The mates go overboard about Tina, a little bit too much to be credible perhaps, and Gary becomes quite angry as they try to work out his 'freaky Jeremy Kyle sex thing'. He heads straight to Tina's and accepts her hospitality and has a cup of coffee.  Then he makes a move on her. Brilliant acting by Michelle Keegan! Her outrage is palpable and is a strong candidate for the best few minutes of tonight's double episode. This is particularly effective in the light of Anna's words of comfort to Izzie about Gary. 'He's solid, he's dependable and he loves you and that little baby that you're having.' Somehow, especially after Anna has given that vote of confidence to her son, Izzie is bound to find out about Gary's attraction to Tina. Find out? She knows already.

Talking of finding out, how long will it be until Karl's crime is discovered?

Stella works as a cleaner in the Bistro while her wastrell boyfriend carries on lounging around "promising" to get work. Then straight back to the Bistro to drink away her minimum wage! Too much shouting from Tina yesterday - yeah I know she was justfied where Obsessed Gary is concerned but she always has a cob on about sommat. Tim is beginning to annoy, why take Faye into the cafe when he knows he has no money? How much does egg and chips cost to cook at home? Not much. Bit of a scrounger methinks.

All I can say about these episodes is: "Oh dear".

Were we supposed to be impressed that St Ella got a job? If yes, why??? OK maybe a bit of a reaction but St Ella is really starting to annoy me, as are the other Price girls (except Eva. Eva has potential!)

I literally could not look when Gary moved in to kiss Tina. Yet another happy couple split up because the writers work under the illusion that a happy couple is a boring couple. I may be unpublished but as a writer myself, I know for a fact that you can write happy couples well if you really want to.

Much as it pains me to say this, last night's episodes were terrible! The worst written scripts in ages. The dialogue was largely unconvincing, clunking along in the most contrived fashion to serve clumsy plot needs. I agree Michelle Keegan was spot on, but I cannot say how much I detest this storyline, knowing from press spoilers that Tina is going to be won round by Gary's creepy obsession. How could the girl who insisted on paying back the £200 for the ring suddenly decide she's in love with Gary while carrying Izzy's child? Oh, and speaking of that ring, why did ANYONE pay £200 for it - it was stolen property and therefore legally belonged to Tina. All that plank Gary needed to do was inform the police who would have returned it to her for nothing.

Three weeks without Corrie and it sounds like I am not missing anything. I trust all of your judgements and will watch sporadically the episodes you guys liked. (Are you listening Stuart?)

I am new here but have been reading all this for awhile. Now my 2 cents. How is it that Karl is the only person in the history of Corrie Street who cannot find a job within a 4 block radius? I am so sick of his storyline and him and Stella. Get it over with. The truth is going to come out, we know that. Why drag it out with this ridiculous storyline?
Sick of Tim, he is a complete waste of time and Faye is just a sickening child. Who would fight to keep her? She is horrible. And really sick of the "baby" story with Tina, Gary & Izzy. So these losers are going to take Owen's money, with no thought to Izzy and and play happy families? How low can you be? Ugh....
The writers NEVER write a realistic storyline these days. Everybody has to split up, everybody has to cheat, everybody has to be a complete D-Bag.What is next? Dennis in bed with Emily?

I don't know why everyone has gone especially negative over these episodes.

1) The Roy-Sylvia scenes were brilliant. It turns out Hayley does not know Roy as well as Sylvia does. Sylvia predicted this and now Roy has gone all OCD over timing his phone calls to St. John. He is clearly not equipped to deal with this event and Sylvia was spot on. Her line about having a bonfire in the flame-retardant receptacle was good too!

2) Tommy and Tina have always been MS attractive bores. Izzy has more expression in one eyebrow than Tina in her entire face. The pendulum is swinging now and thanks to this storyline, however distasteful, Izzy will get more camera time. Maybe even Tina will have more to work with if she is not just eye candy and breaks from Tommy.

3) I don't like what the Gary-Tina storyline says about surrogacy, but I felt how the army reunion played with Gary's head. It's locker room, with his mates ribbing him about his masculinity. He starts getting insecure about actually not impregnating his girlfriend and also responding to peer pressure to prove his studliness by bedding the super-fit surrogate, retroactively :/ Maybe the strangeness of what he's doing suddenly hits him upside the brain. "That's not what normal guys do..." It could be a complex story, if played out right.
