Coronation Street double episode review, Monday Oct 1

All serious stuff tonight apart from a little levity brought to us via Mary and her transatlantic holiday win. She was in fine joyous form tonight, even before she knew she had won the competition. What a brilliant line she came up with too - a thoroughly worthy winner with her elephants saying to each other, 'Good job we brought our trunks.' Norris became considerably less grumpy as he tried to worm his way in as the companion on the holiday. What a lovely gesture though by Mary as she hands the tickets over to Roy and Hayley so that they may deliver the paperweight by hand,.rather than having to post it at extortionate cost. One of the writers' most brilliant lines for Mary is tonight's, 'Last time I flew they had to make an emergency landing on account of my screaming. We were only going to Inverness'.  We can forgive her (just) for her rather derogatory comment to Hayley claiming to be more like Audrey Hepburn than Hayley.

Elsewhere though there are some very dark themes. Tyrone is really struggling  with his devious wife in her attempts to keep the three of them together. At least as a househusband he will be able to protect Ruby from her mother. That said, you have to feel for someone who says of her violent father, 'I hated him so much and now I've turned into him.'

Poor Maria! A young woman with a young son needs to stay alive. It is every parent's fear that they will become too ill to look after their children. Death is something a parent cannot contemplate, so it is perfectly understandable that she is in such a dreadful state  Marcus is certainly the kind of friend you need in this situation.

The Lloyd and his daughter and his old flame story is somewhat tedious. It will be interesting to see where the story goes but hopefully go it will.

Nice touch from Nick buying the football boots for Max. David succeeded in swallowing his pride and when Max becomes the new Beckham he will see that it was all worth it. Kylie had no such reservations and she can't be blamed for that.      .

'Under s20 (1) of the Family Law Reform Act 1969 the court can, in any civil proceedings where a person’s parentage falls to be
determined, give a direction scientific tests be carried out to determine whether any party to the proceedings is or is not the father or mother of that person.'

In other words, Fizz's solicitor appears to have got it wrong. The writers need to be accurate and Tyrone could simply have bottled out of going to court.

you would think Tina , Fiz or his buddy would tell Tyrone to get help from an abuse support group or call a hotline or something. Bad enough when it was just him now it's the baby. Time for the writers to introduce some therapy in this show. He could tell the Dr. he would know what to do. Even Tina needs help with her anger yet no one reognizes it. Don't watch as much as I used to it's ridiculous.

Can't they think of a different cancer? How about David or Tommy getting testicular cancer? Deirdre having a lung cancer cancer scare? Dennis or Norris getting prostate or bowel cancer. Even Alma died of cancer of the woman's parts. So unimaginative and uninformative.

I agree, why breast cancer again especially as it was done so well and poignantly before with Sally Dnevor. Samia Ghadie is not a strong enough actress to carry this off, just looking gormless like your brain is not working properly does not cut it. Marcus was a good friend though and I am even liking Aiden, shows how superflous the arm folding Sean is now. If David cannot afford football boots for Max then why is he turning Rita as a customer away, the salon never looks busy anyhow.

Kevin got Jack's DNA sample simply by taking his dummy after Molly refused permission ... or have the writer's forgotten that? Ty has more than enough opportunities. I agree with the breast cancer storyline. Sally did it so well. I feel Samia's acting will naturally be compared to Sally's and found lacking.

Breast cancer is sadly more common so the odds that someone else on the street might have a lump are higher. Carla mentioned that she had a benign lump before too and we don't know yet if Maria will actually have to go through treatment yet.

Too bad Ty isn't closer to Kevin who'd be able to say "easy peasy, Ty! Just grab one of Ruby's dummies and go to this lab and you'll have your answer".

Hey, maybe Kevin could take Tommy back on to do simple jobs around the garage to help out while Ty is off - oil changes, etc.

Samia Ghadie is fantastic actress! Her scenes yesterday with Marcus was brilliant! Really emotional made me cry when she did!
