Robert, 87, will appear as a lollipop man in Corrie and has been signed up to start filming next month.
His character will be training up Dennis Tanner to take over his job.
A Corrie source said: “It’s always a boost to get famous faces in. Robert fits the bill perfectly as a lollipop man handing over the reins. Dennis is aged 70 and no doubt the writers will have a laugh as they set about him settling into his new job.”
You might remember that Marina from Last of the Summer Wine also appeared in Corrie as Charlotte Hoyle's mum. And Hilda Ogden actress Jean Alexander went on to play Aunty Wainwright in Last of the Summer Wine too.
Speaking of lollipop men and ladies on Coronation Street - how many of them have there been? I can recall the following but I'm sure there must be more. Click on the names for pics of each one in their lollipop outfits: Jack Duckworth, Connie Rathbone, Uncle Albert - and did Percy Sugden do it too? Any more?

Now this is a good idea. I like the idea of Dennis the junior OAP being treated like an apprentice by the senior OAP - if that's the way it goes. I imagine Dennis will try his hardest to wind his mentor up.
87!!! Don't they have decent pension plans in the U.K.? What is this need for actors and actresses to work 'til they drop in harness?
Maybe he wants to keep working Anonymous?
Shit. So once you reach 65, it's game over? Maybe we should institute compulsory euthanasia?

It's good that he still wants to work at 87. Why all the negative comments peoples?
My sentiments exactly, Joseph!

Jean Fergusson (Marina) played Charlotte's mum, not Stape's. And when actress Rita May was seen with a lollipop, she wasn't playing Connie Rathbone, but an earlier character called Brenda. Sorry to be nit-picky:)
