Casting has started for the new Coronation Street musical and Katherine Kelly will be on stage playing her on-screen character of Becky McDonald. Or at least, that is, according to the News of the World.
Hmmm... I'm not sure a TV actress could combine her acting up in Manchester with a stage show in London although the tabloid does say that Katherine has agreed a deal with Corrie bosses to leave the show to star in the musical, but is expected to return at a later date.

Oh please let this be true - then we can watch Corrie without this dreadful character monopolising nearly every episode.
Hear hear.
Yep, if it got her off our screens for a while then I'm all for it too.
The mere thought of this person doing a song and dance routine makes me shudder.
Becky Granger is absolutely superb and I won't hear a word said against her.
I agree, littlevienna; I'm a big fan of Katherine's, and I'm betting that, like so many actors, she's great at belting out a tune. And if this musical is to have much of a chance of success, they really do need a current cast Name to be in it (either that or a handful of former stars). Unfortunately, against the project is the fact that it's being written by the woman who wrote 'Nightshriek', a musicalisation of 'Macbeth', generally regarded as the Worst Musical Ever Written. The omen's are not great!
Why the praise for this character? Yes, she may be a good actress, but her character is loud, ignorant and vulgar.....absolutely not a role model for anyone..
Perfectly true, Oscar. Becky IS loud, ignorant & vulgar, and very unlike the real Katherine Kelly. It's a testament to her ability as an actress that she plays her so convincingly. It's the actress I'm praising for realising a loud, vulgar and very realistic character. There are real Beckys out there and as such, portraying one in Corrie is fair game. What makes her special is Katherine's ability to convey her fragility and vulnerability as well as her yobbish side. I don't think anyone would ever claim her as a role model, but then that's not what Corrie characters are intended to be. They are dramatic creations, and since drama is conflict, they are all (apart from Emily!) flawed personalities.
Nightshriek beat Phantom of the Opera, and Les miserables in three big awards ceremonies with some of the best reviews ever received by a new musical! Don't think ITV would let anyone without an amazing critical track record write the musical of Coronation Street do you? What a misinformed comment! Plus Katherine Kelly is one of the best actresses in the country. With this combination, this is going to be dynamite. Can't wait.
