Belle of the Back Streets

Baby Bertie is home from hospital and Sinead and Daniel throw a party in their flat. Beth and Kirk are there, as well as Steve, Tracy, Claudia and Ken. But when Beth is alone with the baby she moans about posh Claudia and her friendship with Ken. This makes Claudia wonder what she really means to Ken, are they just friends? It forces Ken to give a name to their friendship too, they declare themselves partners, a couple, and just in case anyone’s in any doubt, the ess-ee-ex is mentioned too.

Gina leaves this week in a shock move that took me by surprise. She’s said so many times she’s leaving that I was expecting her to sit down, put the kettle on and move back in with Sally and Tim. But no, she’s really gone this time, but not until she saves Tim’s life after he has a mild heart attack and she urges him to go to see the doc. So it’s a grateful Sally and Tim who see Gina off, and Sally puts Tim on salads and exercise, much to Tim’s disgust.

Kate mourns Rana this week, she cries and holds a memorial to which Carla attends and confesses all about the roof. Then Kate holds another memorial. There could well be a third.

But back to Carla. Roy throws her out of his flat, his moral compass at odds with that of Carla’s and he’s unable to countenance her living under his roof when he knows she knew about the roof all along. Peter pleads with Gary not to tell the cops that Carla knew the roof was damaged and he bribes Gary with cash from the sale of his boat. Gary takes the cash, Sarah finds out and is furious, but not as mad as she’s going to be when she finds out that Gary’s handed over the cash to evil loan shark Rick Neelan as Gary’s in deep debt to a nasty piece of work.

Carla and Nick convince Yasmeen to let them reopen Underworld in the community centre. Imran is aghast with this move, blaming Carla for the killing of his sister and angry with Yasmeen for allowing the factory to carry on at Jamila House. But, as Yasmeen says, people’s livelihoods are at stake. Despite putting on a strong front, Carla inwardly crumbles, blaming herself for all that’s gone wrong.

Over at Chesney’s, he’s infuriated with Gemma’s slovenly ways around the house. She licks her dinner plate clean instead of washing up, damages the washing machine and when she goes out to buy another, comes back with a smoke machine and disco lights instead. Chesney arrives home to find Gemma and Paul (with a hidden Rita, a lovely touch) having a rave in his living room. And when Gemma tells Chesney that she takes Joseph for a walk “to count the dog poos, it helps him with his maths” it’s too much for Chesney and it’s left to Rita to have a word with Gemma about taking responsibility for her actions.

A strange storyline reared its head in the shape of broad beans this week as Brian and Geoff got involved in growing seedlings versus buying the beans from the supermarket. I’m not really sure where this is headed or what the point was, but it showed that Geoff can be a nasty cheat, he’s not the fluffy bunny type of man we all thought he once was.

Meanwhile, over at Trim Up North, Natalie from Nottingham returns and David and Nick give her a job at the barber shop. This is in exchange for her keeping quiet about Nick nicking Audrey’s cash, which she knows all about. Also at the barber shop, Sinead develops a new beard oil for the Platts after Sean comes out in a rash.

And that’s just about that for this week.

Imran's reaction to the factory employees returning to work was ridiculous. Does he really expect people to just quit their job and not provide for their families?

Speaking of jobs, who is running the solicitors? With Imran surely on compassionate leave and Adam Barlow still holidaying somewhere, who is in charge? Is Leanne still the secretary there, or have I missed something?
