I'm loving Roy and Cathy together but I know that at least one of our bloggers doesn't feel the same way. What I love more than anything about these two characters together is they're two awkward people, finding love. It's been done slowly, appropriately, with just the right amount of respect paid to Hayley and Roy's love for her too.
Melanie Hill and David Neilson are superb as Cathy and Roy. It's an absolute joy to watch the two of them on-screen, you get the feeling you're watching two actors who have honed their craft, playing the parts of two characters we all love. Well, when I say 'all' of us love them... I know I do. Do you?

Yay
Yay. Finally, TPTB are finally showing due respect to David Neilson's acting talents by giving Roy proper storylines rather than relegating him to a glorified extra.
Definitely a No from me. I don't like Cathy, the recent Blackpool scenes were over done and I don't believe in it. Roy wouldn't move on so quickly
I would be lying if I said that I love Cathy but I like her and Roy together. They were very sweet in the live episode. The actors work great together and I look forward to watching their relationship grow.
Time moves twice as quickly in Soapland so you could say that Hayley died about four years ago. Long enough for many bereaved people to move on, but Roy has frog leaped several stages. I would have liked to see him gain some good male friends and have a gang of mates of his own age, some of whom were perfectly able and some maybe not so able. It seems too obvious that Roy would be attracted to somebody as 'different' as him. Not only that, she has a nephew with Downs. It seems like the writers are saying 'let's put all the different/odd people in one family'. I hoped to see Roy grow as an assertive, outgoing individual, involved in many different activities, and that would have been a real tribute to Hayley. As for Cathy, indifferent to her so far.
I too tend to think it's a bit too early for Roy, but then, so does Roy. We can't choose the timing of meeting those who come into our lives to occupy a special place and we're watching him struggle with his conflicting feelings. Also I think the writing has been patchy for Cathy, veering from sublime to grating, and Melanie Hill can only play what she's given. So if it means more scenes of the quality of the Stationary Bus scene in the live, then I'll give it a cautious Yay.
Roy wouldn't move on so quickly? Isn't it going on TWO years? Jeez, how long does he have to mourn? He's only just turned 60 and should have something positive in his life and deserves a companion. I am so not in favor of making him the single widower forever just because he can't give up the ghost of Hayley. In fact, he's too logical to accept that for himself. Is Cathy ideal? Meh...I don't know. I am just happy to see Roy living again.
Nay. I don't trust her, simple as that. There's an awkwardness about her which is more uncomfortable than endearing, and I still feel like she's hiding something.
Nay from me, I'm afraid, superb as both actors are. It just seems...too much, too soon. I would rather have seen a platonic friendship develop over time.
A very enthusiastic yay
I agree with Humpty Dumpty. Also, Melanie Hill is a good actress and I normally like her, but they need to develop Cathy's character properly, not just make her into Roy's girlfriend. Let her sort out the hoarding problem and become an asset at the community centre with her art classes. Cathy and Roy should remain just friends, providing support for each other because they've both lost much - loved spouses. Far from all widows and widowers go on to remarry.
A big fat NO!
I don't like Cathy and never have liked her scenes, with Roy or without.
Absolutely YAH...they make a lovely and believable couple....I hope the writers choose to keep them together.... Corrie needs more solid couples on the cobbles.... We all loved Hayley immensely..but....time has moved on and so should the story line, opening Roy's heart up again......
A nay from me as well. Roy and Hayley had something very unique, they were longstanding best friends as well as lovers. That is not a relationship that can easily or casually be replaced. I can not imagine him looking for a romantic coupling this soon, or frankly, ever. Companionship, yes. Friendships, yes. "Courting", no. Not being part of a couple does not mean you are lonely or alone.
I agree with everyone who wishes they had given him more time with friends like Ken, Carla, Yasmeen and Sharif, as a grandpa to Ruby and Hope, and a bereavement support group. And that the garden allotment hadn't been more than a device to meet Cathy.
By taking it extra-slowly, it feels believable to me. And from a practical point of view, they have to give Roy some kind of partner, otherwise, as someone else has already said, he would simply become an extra in other people's storylines.
Noooooooo! Nothing to do with the fact that Roy is my absolute Corrie favourite, it's just that there's something about Cathys character that I find hard to like. I thought it would be a nice development to have Roy and Cathy develop a platonic relationship and together they have lots of fun and adventures and eventually find new partners each. But Roy and Cathy are too much too soon.
Cathy's character development seems inconsistent. One moment she is agonised to the point of paralysis at the thought of offending someone over a triviality, then she is screaming down the house because she is offended by a triviality, and then she is shrugging "so what" at mushing toast crumbs into the butter and acting as though laid-back is her style and everyone else can lump it - and then we are back to agonising over the pressure of helping some novices with a free afternoon lesson. Where does all this fit in to Roy moving on to a new source of comfort?
Unless they are laying the groundwork for the poor woman being so mentally ill that she ends up plotting to murder Roy because she thinks he is an alien stealing her brainwaves. Then I would agree, provided she does not succeed.
Nay. While Hayley was alive she seemed to be rooting for Roy to one day be with Mary. Hayley was Roy's rock and brought him out of his shell. Mary would do the same for him. I admit that both Cathy and Mary are odd but there's nothing mean spirited about Mary's quirks while Cathy looks sinister. Roy deserves the kind of woman who would help him maintain his close ties with Fizz and Chesnay not drag him into her never-ending problems.
