Corrie actress gets married - in fab Doc Marten boots

Ooh, I do love a nice story on a Sunday morning and they don't come much nicer than a wedding.

Pic copyright: The Mirror / Steve Bainbridge
Melanie Hill, who plays Cathy Matthews in Coronation Street, got married yesterday to her partner Jim Daly.

The wedding took place in a pub in Muswell Hill, North London. And to compplete her wedding outfit, Melanine wore white Doc Marten boots with red hearts on them.

We've found the boots here!  > Dr. Martens Women Bentley II Hrt Chukka Boots, White (White/Heart Red Venice/Smooth),

The Mirror reports that around 30 guests watched the couple exchange vows. None of the Corrie cast were spotted at the event.

Melanie's first husband was actor Sean Bean.

Corrie star helps keeps Georgina Anderson's legacy alive

Driving back from a weekend away we were listening to BBC Tees in the car.  They featured a lovely story which included Coronation Street's Melanie Hill (Cathy) and it's definitely worth sharing here.

Melanie Hill - Cathy Matthews in Corrie - heard about a teenager called Georgina Anderson, who has now sadly passed away at the age of just 15.  Georgina wrote and recorded a song - Two Thirds of a Piece - and Melanie arranged for the song to be played in the background during a scene in the Rovers which was televised on December 23 last year.

Royalties from the song are being split between Teenage Cancer Trust and Cancer Research UK.

Georgina's dad Paul said: “I was chatting to Melanie one day and it cropped up about Georgina’s song. Jokingly, I said Georgina would have loved to be on Coronation Street and I didn’t suppose she could get her song on it. The next thing we knew, there it was, playing in the background. It was very appropriate, too, because it was during a discussion about childhood cancer - it was done very deliberately. It was beautiful and Georgina would have been absolutely ecstatic because she was a massive Coronation Street fan. And every time more money comes in, it adds to the lovely legacy she has left.”

You can listen to the song, below and of course donate here:

Roy saves Cathy from fire on Coronation Street

There's a spoiler in this week's Mirror that says there's going to be another fire in Coronation Street.  This time, the fire will be at Cathy's house - and Roy will save her from the flames.

After Roy saves Cathy from the fire, we'll learn that Cathy actually caused  the fire herself.

It's reported that she'll explain to medical staff that she fell asleep on the sofa, while cooking.

Oh dear.

One fan on twitter suggested to Melanie Hill, who plays Cathy, that with Cathy's house no longer habitable after the fire that Cathy might move back into Roy's Rolls with Roy.  The actress has retweeted this... I wonder if it'll be true?

We know that David Neilson, the actor who plays Roy on Coronation Street, is taking a break early in 2016.  Might Cathy be the one to run the cafe while Roy's gone?

Roy courting Cathy - Yay or Nay?

I'm loving Roy and Cathy together but I know that at least one of our bloggers doesn't feel the same way.  What I love more than anything about these two characters together is they're two awkward people, finding love. It's been done slowly, appropriately, with just the right amount of respect paid to Hayley and Roy's love for her too.

Melanie Hill and David Neilson are superb as Cathy and Roy. It's an absolute joy to watch the two of them on-screen, you get the feeling you're watching two actors who have honed their craft, playing the parts of two characters we all love.  Well, when I say 'all' of us love them... I know I do.  Do you?

Melanie Hill arrives on Coronation Street tonight

Roy's new lady friend Cathy arrives tonight on Coronation Street. Cathy Matthews will be played by Melanie Hill, one of my favourite actresses and a Sunderland lass too, just like myself.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing Melanie on my favourite telly show.

Here's what we know about Roy's new friend. Roy gets his own allotment to grow some fruit and veg, and meets a widowed lady on the next allotment lot. This is where Cathy, played by Melanie Hill, will come into Roy's life.

She won't be a love interest - but someone who Roy will feel obliged to help guide through the world. Roy will offer real, redemptive support to Cathy.

Melanie says she's not there to fill Hayley's shoes, and neither would we want her to. Here's to Melanie on Corrie and a new friend for Roy!

Video: Melanie Hill on joining Corrie as Roy's new friend

Melanie Hill, who will be on screen soon in Coronation Street as Roy's new lady friend Cathy Matthews, was interviewed on ITV's Loose Women today.

They showed a clip of Roy and Sharif meeting Cathy on the allotment, which we'll see on Corrie on Monday 20th April.

Melanie said that feedback so far has been great from fans. She's coming into Corrie to play Roy's friend. Cathy is a lady who has lost her husband and she and Roy bond over their grief, two lost souls together.  But does she have an ulterior motive? Cathy teased a little on that!

She said she's nervous about watching her first scenes and will be reading comments on twitter while drinking a large glass of wine to calm her nerves.  She's over the moon about joining Corrie and couldn't believe it when her agent asked her to go for the audition and screen test with David Neilson, who plays Roy. She says she's never been so nervous in all of her life.

She also announced that her daughter is expecting a baby and she's going to be a grandmother!

You can watch Melanie on the ITVPlayer, her interview appears in the second half.

Melanie Hill: "I could never fill Hayley Cropper's shoes"

Actress Melanie Hill will be turning up on screen very soon as the new lady in Roy Cropper's life. Melanie will be playing the role of Cathy Matthews, who Roy meets on the allotment.

Melanie recently gave interviews at ITV Corrie and our blogger Graeme was all set to go and meet her, until a nasty flu bug stopped him in his tracks.  However, with the help of our friends at the Manchester Evening News, we can bring you some of Melanie's Coronation Street interview as she talks about her new role, playing Cathy.

She admitted that she will never fill Hayley’s shoes - and I don't think any of us would ever expect, or want her to.

The MEN says "Melanie knows winning over Corrie fans will be tough".  I don't agree. I'm ready for Roy to be happy again, with a new friend. She's won me over already. If it turns into romance, it'll be done slowly and properly, as is always the case with Roy. I'm not too concerned that she'll try to be the new Hayley - there could only ever be one.

Melanine said: “I could never fill Hayley Cropper’s shoes - I’ll just wear different shoes. She was so well loved and the public went through that. It was a bereavement and the fans felt it so much that I am aware of that. I am prepared for comparisons, so I might have a bottle of wine before I go on Twitter. I think that is why I am gradually being introduced as a friend. I would never attempt to fill her big shoes. I am just happy to come in in my own right as a friend of him.”

Melanie's character meets Roy when they start working on adjacent allotment plots. They confide in each other after Cathy reveals she is getting over the death of her husband.

She said: “She’s lost her husband so they are lost souls. Her husband happens to have the allotment next to Roy’s, so she goes and hangs out there and that’s when she bumps into Roy and they strike up this odd friendship.”

It's been more than a year since Roy's wife Hayley died of pancreatic cancer.  Making friends with a new woman could be just the tonic for Roy that he needs, I feel.

EXCLUSIVE Coronation Street Blog interview with David Neilson (Part 3)

In the third and final part of our exclusive interview with David Neilson, David tells us about the relationship between Roy and Hayley in Coronation Street and what the future may hold for Roy Cropper.

“A Perfect Duet - the Diary of Roy and Hayley Cropper” by Coronation Street Blog Editor, Glenda Young, is available to buy now. More information about how you can pick up a copy is available here.

The first part of our interview with David, in which he talks about how he became an actor and some of his roles before joining Corrie, can be read here. And the second part of our interview, which focuses on David’s portrayal of Roy Cropper, can be read here.

Here is the final instalment of our exclusive David Neilson interview…

David Neilson with Corrie Blogger, Martin Leay

Martin Leay (ML): Did Hayley transform Roy as a character?

David Neilson (DN): When Hayley came in she was going to be the first in a long line of disastrous relationships but because she was so good and we worked well together they went ‘hang on, we’re going to have to bring her back’.

ML: Was it a surprise when you found out Hayley was transgender?

DN: The way we dealt with it, it was about any kind of prejudice. Roy is very straight – it wasn’t ideal for him. It was a big crisis but he was in love with this person, so therefore he had to deal with it. There was always a bit of grit – it wasn’t easy. It was outside of his realm. They were both up against society and I think the decency in people identifies with that. And also, we both had immense sympathy for the characters. We always went from the point of view of the integrity of the characters above anything.

ML: Do you think Roy and Hayley helped to shift attitudes in society for the better?

DN: What people related to was their relationship. It was ‘we like them, we want them to be together’. That was Roy’s thing: ‘if I leave this person, I’m less of a person than when we are together’ and he discovered something that unfortunately for him wasn’t easy. But that’s part of development, it is part of growing… life is a struggle. I think people relate to that.

ML: How did you feel when you found out Hayley was going to die?

DN: The writing was fantastic. I got the scripts and it was like wow, this is quite difficult to read, so when we came to doing it – you know it was huge – you get the pay off from a 15 year relationship in real time and you realise you’ve been in their life. It has a feeling of reality about it, which you can’t get in any other kind of show. People have gone through all these experiences with them.

ML: It must have been very difficult to film?

DN: Yes, because you go through it on a daily basis scene after scene and then you get a pile of scripts and go home with it. There is a huge responsibility involved because of what the subject matter is. I had two friends die of cancer during that year and it was quite surreal. The great thing about a human story is that it affects everyone. You can have car crashes, fires and tram crashes but for most people, these things don’t happen. This happens and affects people and so it’s an everyday human story but immense – devastating. It does feel like a responsibility to the story, to the character and to people watching. It was very difficult to watch. I know a lot of people who couldn’t – and that’s quite understandable.

ML: Julie Hesmondhalgh says she cried after filming her last scenes. Did you get emotional?

DN: The character cried. It was very upsetting. I just remember feeling completely exhausted by it. I remember the scene we filmed, the actual death; that was quite something. And it had never happened to me before – Kay Patrick, who directed it, didn’t have any interruptions. Normally you get retakes but she said ‘let them rehearse on their own as much as they want’ and then we just did it once. It was a great sense of concentration and everybody, the whole crew and team, was right at the top of their game.

ML: You and Julie are very good friends. It must have been great working with her?

DN: It was such a pleasure to go to work. You might do several episodes one after the other so we’d be on all day and sometimes we’d have such fun and the crew would be laughing and at the end of the day you’re knackered but it’s such a nice job. It’s just messing about for a living. It’s great. I actually do for a living what I got told off for at school.

ML: But you’re very good at it!

DN: Well, getting away with it. It’s finding that little bit of something. That’s the skill – and making a living out of it.

ML: You picked up Best Dramatic Performance at last year’s British Soap Awards. How does it feel to have your work recognised in this way?

DN: What I have found is that it makes a big impression on other people and that’s nice. It does change other people’s perception of you. So I realise it’s better to win than not to but as far as all the other stuff is concerned… I have been up for Best Actor several times and I’ve not won it but I’ve never come away thinking I’m any better or worse than I’ve ever felt about myself. ‘Best Dramatic Performance’ – it’s who cried the most. And also, it depends on who has had the most lines and who has had the storylines.

ML: Hayley’s exit storyline was beautifully written but surely it would have been much less powerful without the wonderful performances from you and Julie?

DN: It comes together. You can look like the character and dress like the character but unless the words are there and the situations are there – you’re up against it. I’ve been very fortunate – with the people I’ve worked with and with the writing.

ML: Can you tell us what’s coming up for Roy?

DN: I actually don’t know. It’s a choice I make, really. It’s like life, it just happens. I’m working with Melanie (Hill). I’ve done a couple of days with her. She’s great – a really good actor and a nice woman. That’s the most important thing – that we get on. And we do, so that’s fab. It’s interesting – it’s all wide open, really.

ML: I’ve read it is not going to be a romantic relationship between Roy and Cathy. Do you think viewers are ready to accept Roy with another woman at some point?

DN: It’s a completely new area for him. It depends how it’s handled – it’s all going to be in the writing. Anything is possible. I think it’s the appetite of the writers… and then I deal with it. When it comes through that process, it lands in my pigeonhole and I’ve got a pile of scripts and I go ‘oh, right, OK - what’s happening here?’ Again, it’s like life. I don’t know what’s going to happen this afternoon.

Whatever did happen that afternoon, I hope David had a very Happy Birthday. It was an honour to meet him and learn about his career and I am very grateful to him for giving so much of his time to speak to the Coronation Street Blog. David is a great actor and, I am pleased to say, a really nice guy - modest, friendly, funny and down-to-earth.

I hope that readers enjoyed these interviews. If you missed Parts One or Two, they are available here and here.

I would like to thank ITV, David Neilson and also Glenda Young for her expert editorial guidance.

Roy Cropper is a character that I have enjoyed watching over the past 20 years – he has made me laugh and he has made me cry. David Neilson has been involved in some of the most interesting and moving Corrie storylines I can remember and never fails to turn in a first class performance.

Long may Roy continue to serve the most competitively priced organic breakfast in Weatherfield (with allotment-grown tomatoes and mushrooms)!

Why Melanie Hill is the perfect actress to play Roy's friend

I was very excited to learn yesterday that actress Melanie Hill is joining Coronation Street to play Roy's new lady friend.

I think Melanie Hill is the perfect casting to play Roy's new lady friend, romance or not.  Melanie Hill is an actress that, I think, the British public hold in some high esteem. She was Aveline in Bread, Hazel in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Cilla Black's mam in the recent ITV drama Cilla.  How much more cosy and Roy-friendly do you want?  Melanie is a RADA trained stage actress too. In my opinion, she's the perfect casting to play Roy's new friend.

We all love Roy, and couldn't bear to see him hurt or distressed in any way. I don't think any of us wanted Mary to get her talons into him after Hayley died, and thankfully Corrie steered away from this carefully and discreetly.

With the introduction of such a well-loved actress as Melanie Hill to play a role in our favourite show matching up against such a well-loved character as Roy, I see the stars aligning and things are going to be perfectly matched.  It won't be the Perfect Duet that was Roy and Hayley, of course as there could never be a love story as perfect as theirs. But I'm warmed by the thought of Melanie Hill and David Neilson working together on Corrie and look forward to the appearance of Cathy on screen.  I don't think Coronation Street would dare get this relationship wrong. We all care about Roy far too much.

It's just over a year since Roy's wife Hayley died of pancreatic cancer.  Making friends with a new woman could be just the tonic for Roy that he needs, I feel.
