Samia Ghadie announces pregnancy

Samia Ghadie, who plays Maria Connor on Coronation Street, has announced she's pregnant with her second child.

Samia and her partner, ice-skater Sylvain Longchambon, met on the Dancing on Ice show. Samia announced last night on twitter that she's expecting their first child together. She already has a daughter Freya with her ex-husband Matthew Smith.

The news that Samia is pregnant will of course mean that she'll be taking a break from Coronation Street when she goes off on maternity leave.  This means Maria will no longer be involved in that storyline where she's... hang on, well, there's the kitchen tiles and a bit of hairdressing at Audrey's, but there really hasn't been much else for Maria going on for a very long time.

When Samia is given a meaty role for Maria, which let's face it isn't often, she really shows her mettle, Maria grows a pair and both the actress and the character are worth watching. But for far too long Maria has been nothing more than a hair-twirling bit of background fluff and won't be missed by this fan.

Also still away on maternity leave are Jennie McAlpine (Fiz Stape) and Catherine Tyldesley (Eva Price). Paula Lane, who plays Kylie Platt, has now returned to work.

Well she did go bonkers with Tyrone. Was that last year?

Maria is good when she's in comic scenes, but she only gets those once in a blue moon. Congratulations to Samia.

Congratulations. I agree, she's good when they give her something to be good with.

Maria Sutherland flares her nostrils, bungs something in her gob and chews while talking and playing with her hair. But, I wouldn't say she's ever grown a pair. She's lame and kinda vacant and the Corrie screen will be better off without her prescence. I for one, would prefer it. Wonder how they'll write her 'out' this time? EEeeesh.

I must say her partner is gorgeous! But like Milly said I won't miss her one bit when she leaves (I wish her all the best) The same as I don't miss Fizz at all either.

Time to leave for good now Samia and look after your family. Your character has been pointless for years.

*Congrats. Samia* on baby #2... Hopefully when you return to the Street...you will be given an interesting 'welcome back' storyline.... The writers have unfortunately just left you 'dangling' in the background of late...

Time to wave the cobbles goodbye.

I have to agree with those who say they won't miss Maria. She's been very fortunate to remain on in the show for so very long, I think.
I never thought I'd ever say I don't miss Fiz either. I used to really enjoy her.
She's changed over the last year or so, and for me, the waters just closed over her character and she disappeared from sight.

And I thought it was just me who didn't miss Fiz--that says a lot when a beloved character is getting a lukewarm reception. Uh oh.

Good luck to Samia and her partner, maybe the writers will figure out a better solution to writing her out than they have done lately. Maybe have Liam come back from the dead (especially now that it's been announced that Downton Abbey is officially done at the end of this season).

Not a Maria fan either. Someone who is kept on and on with contract renewed over and over but they really dont know what to do with her. But of course another ridiculous 'exit' story will be written for her with her returning after 6 months. A character that just not be seen or mentioned for 6 months and I doubt whether anyone would notice.

So I wonder which one of Maria's parents will fall ill thus needing her to leave for Cyprus.

I know I'm in the minority but I like Maria as she is one of the few genuine characters on the Street.
Unfortunately due to the writers\producers obsession with the Platts and the Windasses,Maria and other characters are ignored for storylines.I bet when Maria does leave,Sarah will be angling for her job at the salon.

I'm sort of torn here watching Corrie of late. The last year or two the show has stalled, missed opportunities, continuously pounds are heads with simple and poorly developed storylines. You add to that a case of revolving characters who come to the show with some purpose only to be led to the sidelines and finally they leave the show. Does Gail Platt have some naughty pictures of Mr. Blackburn? She is hardly the best actress yet her storyline, the family's storyline continue to be pushed in our faces night after night. The stupidity of Gail Platt is beyond reason and anyone as dumb as her should have been institutionalized years ago. Same goes for her aggravating neighbour Eileen. Another feeble character that gets way too much screen time. This has to stop and there needs to be some rebalancing of screen times for characters based on their appeal and ability to carry their role. For example this year there was a big build up for the big fire scene. Sure enough it came about and unfortunately we lost two good characters. But what happened to the story after that. We get a quick visit to the police to see who called them about the fire and then they leave. Never to return again.....yet a fire where there are two casualties....fatal ones and the Police & the Fire Investigation units are not involved??? No one from the insurance company getting in people's faces. Are we expected to wait till the end of September when Tracey will just blow up at Liz while Carla is sitting in the Rovers and admit she wanted to get back at Carla for her being nice to her. Mind you I was originally planning on killing her but then I forgot I lit a candle and walked away......duh???? Who is writing this show? A couple of High School students on their lunch breaks????
I started watching this show not quite 15 yrs, ago. It was pretty good then and the plots and storylines moved along in perfect symmetry. But like I said the last two years have been well below par. Again I attribute this to the problem of finding semi competent High School writers in Gr. 10 and 11. I do look forward to this show weeknites Monday thru Friday here in Canada. But something needs to be done about this show or it will have run itself into the ground by then. Also, have you noticed the concept of "MONEY" is like a fairy tale? It seems everyone has a special money tree in their backyard to keep their cashflow moving. People never seem to work at their jobs yet they buy homes, go on trips, shopping sprees buy another 5 rounds at the Rovers and never be short of cash. Yes, they did make a miniscule story of Steve running into hard times after buying that silly car and investing $35,000 dollars in it or whatever. So the cabbies missed a payroll. Meantime, Tony who must have 10 of these Money trees planted around town is a walking ATM machine with cash being dispursed to everyone to help them on their way. Yet you hardly ever seeing him do work with or without Jason. I mean if the biggest job they got was that one where they put in the new room in Tyrone & Fitz's place then he has to be in bad shape but he never shows it. Like I said...ridiculous....maybe I'll send my resume as a former banker to Blackburn and see if I can get on the writing team.

Cheers!
