The official Coronation Street website at itv.com/corrie have announced that Jimi Mistry is leaving Coronation Street as Kal Nazir.
Jimi said:"I have had a fantastic 18 months on Coronation Street but I never saw myself staying around forever, my life is in London and I enjoy playing a variety of roles."
I rate Jimi Mistry as an actor and wish him all the very best for his future. But I can't say I'll be sorry to see Kal leave. For this Corrie fan, I don't think Kal has worked as a character or fitted into the Street, and neither have his son and father.
The Nazir women, on the other hand, are great.

This character never really got off the ground. I hope he takes his bleary-faced son with him. Alya seems OK but we haven't seen her much lately, and the romance with Gary doesn't really work either. I like his parents though; they bounce off of Roy very well, although I'm surprised they don't interact with Ken more.
Thank goodness for that. Please take your mother and son with you!
Well, what took him so long? I like Jimi Mistry but he must have known for ages that his character wasn't working. Maybe a spring clean of characters is coming. Kal leaves and if Dev goes, the gym will close, not that anyone will notice. Kal takes his children with him, leaving the senior Nazirs. I don't care much for Kal's mum (forgotten her name) but she may improve if she and her husband get new storylines. Then we'll forget they ever had a family. Leanne gets back with Nick; Gary and Izzy can start new lives somewhere else, together or separately. Best if luck, Jimi. I'm sure you can do better elsewhere.
ummm..not surprised here...the viewers, the producers and Jimi all knew it was not working.. Good luck to him in his next venture!
not surprising news but please send the rest of the family with him, theyre all so wooden!
Was actually getting used to his character and his family... I don't blame the actor at all... just tremendously awful writing that didn't show Kal's human side at all. Ah well... an actor has to take up whatever opportunities are available to grow in his skills as well as his career. I wish him well.
I like him, but once they lumped him with Leanne the character lost any hope of being interesting. I hope his parents stick around, I like watching them. I'm pretty indifferent to the kids.
As everyone else says, not surprising. They never really did much with him. ANd yes, he's a good actor and must have been bored silly.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I quite like Zeedan. His sullenness is exactly how I would have been at that age, surrounded by a suffocating family. His interactions with Maddie and Simon have been realistic too. Hope he stays.
Hope he takes the whole family with him,how about he runs off with Sean's vicar, the family will feel they are in disgrace and say goodbye to the cobbles😉
Always sad to see an actor leave, even if the character didn't work or wasn't liked. I wish Jimi Mistry luck with future work he can stretch his skills with.
This is just one step up from when Dr. Carter left without even a mention of it on the show. I have nothing against the actor and wish him well, but Kal's absence will hardly be noticed, if at all.
Why alienate him from his only friends (Gary and Nick, who also need friends badly), then do nothing to develop new friendships, or at least build on the business one with Dev? During all the hullabaloo about Dev going to India and what would happen at each of his businesses, there wasn't even a mention of the gym.
Kal became irrelevant largely because he was cast adrift from the characters used to introduce him to the show. On top of that they haven't shown him doing anything with Simon, and next to nothing of him with Leanne.
It will be interesting to see which (if any) of the Nazirs become the next Eva, blossoming as a character as more of the dead weight around them leaves.
I liked Kal and Leeanne together as he seemed to show more respect for her than Nick did.
I'm also sorry to hear Jimi Mistry is leaving as I thought there was untapped potential for his character.
I blame the writers for this latest exit as they are too focused on writing for the same families,Windasses,McDonalds and the Platts who dominate the most episodes with their storylines. Now I wonder who will be next to leave due to 'lack of storyline'?
Such a poorly thought out character. Feel sorry for the actor that he was given such a dud role.
If the Corrie bosses and writing staff aren't careful, they're going to destroy the show's prestigious reputation, and they'll find that actors and other personnel will be more guarded and less willing to sign contracts, unless they're guaranteed the ability to see and assess the storylines, and even the actual scripts, they're being hired for and have input into their character's development. The list of well-known actors that have left after having their talents wasted is becoming embarrassingly long.
Bye Kal, please take your overacting mother and obnoxious son with you...
Interesting. I dislike this family immensely aside from the granddad, Sharif. I think he has great potential with the older members on the street and could be a good mate to Roy.
Jimi Mistry is a good actor and Frosty suspects its damage limitation, like Sue Johnson, very good actors that wont be short of work, that took a role in the Street that doesnt gel, isnt popular, and drags them down. He must have seen the negative opinion of Kal and his ridiculous relationship with Leanne. I would be happy to see the whole gang go, apart from Grandad G who I think could have a future in the Street and seems a likeable genuine character.
Like several others have said - delighted that Kal is going, and just hope his son and mother go too. Ayla is the only one of the family that has really worked.
Just how many rude, sulky brats can one program accommodate? David is utterly obnoxious, and it's a pity the writers haven't let him mature with age. Callum is vile, but then I suppose he is the current Corrie villain. Then there is Zeedan - a sulky, bigoted brat with no redeeming features whatsoever.
I find Ayla to be just as boring as Kal, maybe more so. Name one interesting scene she's even featured in. It bugs me that guys seem to tolerate her character, just because the actress is pretty. But, to be fair, I guess it goes both ways. Hopefully girls who like girls are also getting value for their viewing time:)
The reason Alya is tolerated is nothing to do with her looks or her sarah beeney voice but because she is the only one that can act.
I think it is a real shame that they wrote Kal's character so poorly. Jimi Mistry is an excellent actor, who when they announced that he was coming on the show, my first reaction was...wow, why would he want to do that? And...I was really happy that he was coming onboard.
They just did not know what to do with him at all. Pairing him with Leanne was a death knoll right from the start. It's too bad really. Certainly not his fault. He is in a growing list of good actors who came to the show I'm sure expecting good things and then leaving because their character is so lame or unlikeable (like Gloria!).
This is totally down to the poor writing and poor direction from Blackburn that has plagued this show for years.
I don't think the producers care if a character sticks or not. They cram the actors into the show like commuters on the rush-hour train. Of course he will not be missed as there are dozens of other disposable characters still on set. He has worked in movies and played a range of characters in the past (unlike long-term soap stars). I expected he got what he needed from this show, his face in the public eye again. Hope he finds challenges more suited to his talents.
It was hard to understand why he was kicking around there anyway. He had/has no solid character presence thanks to being brought in and never used properly. It has been disappointing to see such a fun actor wasted. Jimmi has a twinkle in his eye that never got twunked on Corrie.
Shame.
I have never seen him in other shows, so based on Corrie only, I think his acting is terrible. He tries way too hard to pull off 'I'm a cool guy' , and it never works. I'm sorry to see anyone out of work - but can't say I'm surprised in the slightest.
Zagg, I couldn't agree with your more.
They need to bring back the quality and not quantity. and put an end to the trashy wow stories happening to the same people over and over.
Not sure who to blame for the slide in Corrie quality, but if Stuart Blackburn really doesn't watch the show, he shouldn't be running it.
Great characters like Roy Cropper can be ruined in a minute by such thoughtless control.
