ITV have confirmed that Amy Kelly, who plays Maddie Heath, is leaving Coronation Street.
Stuart Blackburn said last year: "The joy with Amy is that she has no idea how good she is. Short of her wanting to go, the character of Maddie will be here as long as I'm here."
Today, Amy says: "I made the decision to leave because I'm young and adventurous and I want to gain more experience and explore and improve my craft. Acting is my passion and I'm excited to see where it takes me."
"It's been like a second home but like all young people, you eventually fly the nest. I can't thank everyone enough who made this, not only possible, but fantastic."

Character: Can't say I'll be sorry to see her go. Wish she would take Sophie with her.
Actress: Glad to see she realises she needs to "improve her craft".
Knowing haw far ahead these things are announced these days, she'll probably be leaving in 2016!
And as for taking Sawfie with her. I second that.
Smart girl! Wise choice! Courageous move!
Maddeh won't be missed, but I wish Amy every future success in her career. I hope the producers take this departure as an opportunity to completely overhaul the character of Sophie...it's sorely needed:(
Didn't like the character at first but she's grown into a likeable girl. Please give her a good send off but I'm in agreement.....send sawfeeeeee with her!
Good luck to Amy. She's young and should grab every opportunity. I hope Maddie goes off to college. Let it be an up-beat exit and, please, take Sophie with you.
All the best to Ms. Kelly, she's a good actress for one still in her teens.
Amy is a very good actress. She is much better than Brooke Vincent in my humble opinion. I also hope Sophie leaves with her but unfortunately it probably won't happen.
Pairing her with Sophie did her NO favours. For the first time I saw a glimmer of hope when she and Norris called a truce in the pub and she was with somebody who could act. They could have been quite funny together. But I say this with every fiber of my being, please, please now is your chance Mr Blackburn of getting rid of Sophie too. She's brought nothing to the show for eons. I beg you!
Sorry that Maddie is leaving. I reeeeeeeelly hope that they do something positive with her exit, like going to do voluntary work overseas, or going to college to get some decent qualifications, not just going to That London because it's what everyone else does.
I don't have a problem with Sophie. I think she suffers from The Pen Of Doom and the writers need to really give this character something challenging. Sophie was always the bright child, why can't she go to university? There are 4 up the road, she wouldn't even have to leave the cobbles. Maddie leaving could be the catalyst to kick starting some aspiration.
I thought the character of Maddie was finally coming into her own...now Sophie will likely pout for months when Maddie leaves. I'm not looking forward to that.
I never liked the character much so I'm not upset she's going (in say the way I'm upset Julie is going.) I think they started her out with a good story then very quickly reinvented her and then just left her hanging there, not giving her much. The actress is right to go off and work on her craft elsewhere, because it doesn't seem like she was going to get much chance to do it here.
I'm not looking forward to Sophie moping around even more than she already does when she goes.
Is it time to bring Rosie Webster back with a new head?
I wish her all the best on this year's strictly come dancing
I love the way she and Tim interact.
Too bad her departure storyline couldn't include Sophie.
I still say it should be Norris or Tracy who ought to leave. At this point, who's going to be left?
Another good one bites the dust.
She was really starting to shine. I suppose it's a smart move on her part as an actress. Katherine Kelly Suranne Jones, Sally Wainwright and many other true talents have gone on to do some impressive and interesting things. Good Luck Amy, break a leg ;) and all that. The world is your oyster!
I liked her exchanges with Norris and also Simon. Like others, I hope they change Sophie, she is like a me mini version of her Mother.
I'm with the majority here - can't say I'm sorry to see the 'character' leave. She's young and good luck to her as she moves on with her career as an actress. I'd love to see Sophie do the same; I dread to see who they will partner her with next.
Anon. (from Canada)
I didn't even care enough about the character to remember her last name. Good luck to the actress, I'm sure there are better characters in her future.
Why does it seem like about the time a character/actress seems to get interesting, that's when they decide to leave or the character is written out? Rob was turning in to an interesting character and now he's gone, Julie's going to be gone, now Maddie. It seems like so many people leaving lately. Maybe the writers need to stop casting new characters and work with what they have once all the departures have happened. Instead of jumping all over the place with too many storylines, concentrate on several high quality ones.
I echo many of the comments already made. Amy's a cracking actor and Maddie had begun to evolve into an interesting character. Respect to Amy for knowing when the time was right to move on. Good luck!
good luck to Amy, I liked her. The whole storyline needs to be revamped.
Please Please take the dreaded grinning Andrea with you ...

Although I won't miss Maddie per se,I think part of the problem is that the writers focus too much on the same 'favored' characters over and over again.I mean the only reason we saw more of Maddie then Julie [who I will miss]is because she was paired with Sophie a member of one of the 'favored' families, the Websters, the others being of course the McDonalds,Barlows,Platts and now the Windasses.
I wonder though if Maddie will be killed off by Jenny Bradley after she exposes Jenny's scheming against Rita for her money?
Gosh...just when I was beginning to enjoy her character...especially with the way she helped out on the crash scene. I too, enjoyed her interaction with Tim! That is too bad...I wish her well in the future!
It's a shame, as others have said just as she was becoming an interesting character. IMO they just should never have put her with Sophie as there was zero chemistry but if she wasn't with her then where would she have been (going on the ridiculous apparent need for every character to live on the street that is). Sadly just not a particularly well thought through character. I really enjoy her interaction with simon and Tim and considering what simon has been going through that's something they should have touched on more - not a full storyline just would have been a good handle for her character from the beginning. Shame.
And didn't Maddie have a young brother who was in care? That whole storyline has been dropped (unless I imagined it, or am mixing her up with Kylie!)
I too am sorry Maddie is leaving, her character has developed nicely over time.
But I wish her well and hope she makes a success of her acting carrier.

Wrong actress leaving, she acts circles around Brooke Vincent
Sorry but I don't get it at all. She said she loves acting and wants to improve her craft yet she's in one of the top shows in the country with millions of viewers so I don't see what her point is at all. She's a great actress and I seem to be in a minority that I really like the character of Maddie now, although I didn't at first. That's because the actress got into the character and improved it and the writers started giving her meat on the bones to play with so I think her leaving is a crazy decision but up to her. However I *DO* agree Sophie should go. Brooke Vincent is a good actress too. I think the writers let down the character badly though so wouldn't be sorry to see her go. Same with Julie Carp who is just irritating but sorry to see the character of Owen leave. Again he's been sidelined somewhat by the storylines he's being given. Oh well.
I agree re Brooke Vincent. Sophie used to be such a good character, the sensible daughter as against the ridiculous Rosie, with a nice relationship with Kevin, making his recent trust in Jenny even more unlikely. I can't remember why she left school early, but she'd always done well, so could easily go to college rather than work in the corner shop for ever. There was also her Christianity and social conscience, which the scriptwriters seem to have forgotten about.
