The new community centre opens this week with Yasmeen at the helm. It’s called Jamila House, named after Khalid’s wife who died. I like the idea of the community centre a lot. There are bookshelves, a little kitchen, some tables and chairs with checky tablecloths on them and a poster on the wall advertising the Weatherfield Walking Group, whoever they are. Despite Emily giving her time and effort to help set up Jamila House, Yasmeen overlooks this, and Emily, in her opening speech. She’s not all good, is Yasmeen, but I’m finding her good to watch.
Over the road, Owen and Anna receive a court summons for repossession on their house. This poses soap question number 35, sub-section b, clause iii. Namely, who owns their house anyway? I thought when Anna and Eddie moved in it was rented. But maybe I missed something, I usually do.
After being burgled last week, Roy isn’t happy being in the cafĂ© or the flat on his own. He’s clearly scared and retreats, even more, into himself.
Steve’s also having a hard time this week, fighting in prison with dad Jim and turning him into the screws for having a mobile phone in his cell. And then Liz goes and moves Tony into the pub without asking Steve. Michelle does her best to cheer Steve up but even her sexy black top and hot-brush curls fail to hit the spot. Steve is in a dark place and it’s not nice to see. I just want to reach into the telly screen and give him a hug.
Cilla Battersby-Brown returns this week with her arm in a cast. It’s not clear why she’s come back, unannounced, and she’s showing no signs of change, or tenderness towards her kids. Fix and Tyrone put her up and put up with her, for now at least. And after they all head to bed, Sinead questions Cilla about her arm. “It’s osteoporosis,” says Cilla. “Me bones are like sticks.”
And finally this week, Kylie’s back on the estate taking drugs and taking chances with Max’s dad Callum. Callum wants to see his son, and although Kylie denies him this, Callum still turns up outside Bessie Street School in his flash car trying to chat to his son. Kylie’s all over the place at the minute and David knows there’s summat up, he’s just not sure what, not yet.
And that's just about that for this week. Remember, you can sign up to get these Corrie weekly updates by email at http://www.corrie.net/updates/weekly/subscribe.htm

After Eddie left, the owner of the house (might have still been Jerry Morton, don't remember) wanted to sell and Anna freaked out. Owen bought it and continued to rent to her. I reckon the Nazir family will buy it.
Some bright spots, mainly Roy and Steve, but quite a lot of dark and dreary imponderables. Kylie doesn't want Callum to see Max so presumably she hasn't told him which school Max goes to or what he looks like ... Cilla comes back seriously ill with osteoporosis? A very painful condition but not life threatening. More of this story yet to come perhaps.
I don't mind the idea of a community centre. At least, people will have a believable place to bump into each other. It's Yasmeen. Where are her redeeming features? No humour, no compassion, no gratitude. Writers, beware. She'll go the same as Gloria. Alya is OK but she doesn't seem at all torn between her traditional family and a Western lifestyle with Gary. I'm sure there are young Muslim women in her situation who would rather keep the peace than fall out with their relatives. But where's the tension and drama in that? This is TV, and I want to see her rowing with her father. Having said that, her father's a bit of a drip and her grandfather's not much better.
A last thought about Yasmeen. She's the chief librarian of a library that's burnt down. I don't think she's resigned so I take it the local authority have assigned her a post somewhere else or maybe she's on leave. Anyone know for sure? Poor do when fans have to fill in the plot holes themselves.
The council were closing the library, so possibly Yasmeen would be getting some sort of retirement or redundancy arrangement.
As for Callum, presumably he's been following Kylie, lurking about to see her take Max to school.
I take your point, Anonymous, on both counts. While I don't want to have everything spelt out, I do think it's sloppy writing when they can't slip in a line like: 'Have you been following me?' or 'I'm paying for this with my redundancy package.' I can hear the writers groaning; 'Really, does it matter?' It does to me, picky person that I am.
Mr. Dumpty,
It matters to me too, but I've fallen into the habit of filling in the plot holes, It's that or stop watching, as long as Mr. Blackburn is focussed on the lighting!
Watching in Canada how much longer must we endure Kylie running off to the estate? She has atrocious fashion sense, dresses like a clown. Does she never go to work anymore? Must be nice to have lots of money. Sorry but I find the entire storyline ridiculous. The supposed drug dealer looks like a model and would hardly look at Kylie twice! I'll be really glad to see the back of Kylie.
Hm so far Cilla's return has seemed like a bit of a damp squib, she is still sour but older now. This osperperousis story is contrived for Fizz to leave to look after her, returning when she has had her baby.
I too am sick of Kylie and her determination to self destruct and its all so unbelievable that she would behave like this. Why did Max go straight up to Liam in his white car - has he not been told about stranger danger? And how would Liam even know who he was out of all the children coming out of school when he hasnt seen him for years?
Frosty meant Callum not Liam, he is a pretty unbelievable character anyhow.
Are we to assume Callum is giving Kylie the drugs for nothing? No sign of cash yet, although I suppose he might be waiting until she is truelly hooked again.
The spirit of Jamila must indeed be looking down on the new community centre, as it is now easily twice the size of the butcher shop it replaced.
For me Ayla is the only bearable member of the whole new family, and Yasmeen is quite simply vile, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
Actually Callum knew which school Max was at because Kylie rather contrivedly blurted out she had to get back to pick him up 'from Bessie Street School'. I cringed at that line, as the direction of the rest of the episode opened up before us in an instant. Even more unbelieveable, as Frosty says, was Callum's unerring ability to identify Max, not having seen him since he was a baby.
Anyone else find it amusing that Yasmine was forcing her husband to go and collect a donated fridge to put into a property from which they've just finished ripping out a huge walk-in freezer?
Yes, Owen owns the house, so no argument there. But not happy with much else at the moment. I don't like Yasmeen, not just the character either, I think the actor - well, overacts! Not impressed with any of that family, but agree Alya could be salvaged. Can't really see her & Gary as a couple though.
Having Callum recognize Max was totally stupid, unless Kylie perhaps showed him a recent photo.
I do hope they are not going to write that Fiz is going to have to care for Cilla because she has Osteoporosis, it will serve to scare those of us who have that diagnosis to death! She is not a frail 90 year old and I think she should be able to handle it perfectly well on her own! I guess they could write a broken hip into it or something, but the whole thing screams contrived plot line to me.
Catherine Tildesley's pregnancy is really showing now, I don't understand why they couldn't have written that one in. She's in a steady relationship with Jason, they could easily start a family.
Really looking forward to Beth & Kirk's wedding though, only bright spot on the horizon at the moment.
Holes in the plot drive me mad. Sloppy script writing imo. The worst for me is that we have to take for granted all the constant babysitting services the characters must get so they can be in the pub or wherever, whenever the need arises, without explanation of where the kids are. Tracy luv must have spent several years colouring in upstairs back in the day :)
