Shobna Gulati to leave Corrie (again)

News just in from the official Coronation Street website at itv.com has a Farewell Sunita page as actress Shobna Gulati announces she is leaving the soap - again.  She left once before and then returned, if you recall.

The official Corrie site says Shobna has decided it is time to explore other acting opportunities and focus more time on her comedy writing. She will leave the soap next year - the Coronation Street writing team are currently working on an explosive exit for the character.

Shobna said: "I have loved playing Sunita but, having played the role originally from 2001 to 2005 and then returning to Corrie four years ago, I really feel the time has come for me to focus on other aspects of my career. I had always told myself I would see my son through school and I have done that. Comedy writing has long been a passion of mine and the commitment to a show like Corrie is huge and doesn’t really leave enough time to concentrate on other projects.  I’d love to be able to combine my writing and acting career in the future.

"Playing Sunita has been a fabulous opportunity. I've thoroughly enjoyed her journey and am looking forward with excitement to her dramatic departure. I shall miss her. That said, I have made a host of friends cast and crew - friendships that will stay with me."

Will anyone miss Sunita?  And how would you like character to be written out of Corrie - and should she take Dev with her?

I won't miss her. Actually, she should take some of the writers who have destroyed her character with the hold Karl affair with her. She is welcome to take Dev and the kids plus Karl with her and I'd be quite happy.

I won't miss her. she used to be a lovely character but they really did her no favours when she came back. I don't think they knew what to do with her and Dev both.

agreed. good bye and good riddance and please take Dev, too!

I really used to like Sunita, but she's been systematically wrecked by the cringeworthy Karl storyline. I was sorry to see her go last time, but this time not so much.

This is great news. I have always liked Shobna the actress and used to like Sunita but the personality transplant the writers have given her has been terrible to watch. I would have her run off with the children so that Dev does not know where they are. Karl will most likely let her down and end up back with Stella. - Micky

Shobna's very wise to leave at this point. She must realise there's nowhere for her character to go and might be axed, anyway, when the new producer is in post. Sunita was ruined by the Karl affair - as, indeed, he was - and so I won't miss her.

Weren't there rumours that Brian and Julie will buy a greengrocers? I am guessing Carl will mess up and Dev and Sunita will sell up to Julie and Brian and move away.
Dev's character got muddled up after the mad Maya fiasco. He supposedly had a child with each of the seven shop girls. Apart from Amber, how come the others are never mentioned?

I find it funny that the writers are trying to work out an dramatic exit for Sunita when they didn't give a toss about destroying her character so Stella could be front and centre...again.
I hope she does well and maybe will be back someday.

In another article I read that Phil Collinson said that with Sunita and the disintegration of her marriage to Dev the story had viewers on the edge of their seats - more like in horror under their seats! - the man is surely deluded! I won't miss her as her character has been totally made silly and ruined - take Dev, the kids and Sophie with you please!!

I agree with comments above that Sunita was ruined when she returned and will also be happy to see her go, along with her tacky "rear of the year". I'm shocked to learn that Shobna is a comedy writer and if she's any good at it, best of luck to her. I'd like to see Sunita run off with the kids, have Dev chase after her and Karl leave the Street having been shunned by all and sundry. Truth is, I'm waiting to see Sunita leave, Dev hook up with Dreary and Karl hook up with Gail - she's into sleazebags, after all.

I used to love best friends Sunita and Shelley, but that was many head writers ago. Nothing short of a brain injury could explain the personality transplant of Sunita's recent incarnation. A sweet girl who once was smart and brave enough to run from an arranged marriage turned into a slutty middle aged dope. I'll miss the old Sunita but not the current one. Please take Dev with you. Sell the shop to a new family, its time for some fresh faces.

Her character has been totally and irredeemably ruined by the Power That Be. No fault of Shobna herself. I expect she will be glad to leave the whole Sunita/Karl debacle behind her. Please despatch Karl as well - he had great potential but is also ruined. Would be great to see the back of Dev and the kids too - and Stella for that matter:)

Nothing further to add, I expect Shobna is regretting returning only to have her once likeable chaeracter totally ruined with the smutty Karl shennaigans. I wish her well. Dev surely has to go as well now, surely he cant stay on and on?? Plus an excellent actor's John Michie's character has too been ruined.

It's the first time I've ever wanted Sunita and Dev to be reunited... strictly on the condition that they leave together... and in the case of Dev, never comes back!

Whilst they have changed her personality to suit the storyline, which is insulting to loyal viewers, she was getting a bit predictable. I think Shobna may have been uncomfortable playing the scenes and probably getting hissed at in the street in real life. She is foolish to leave though as it will be hard to get work.

I think people are being a bit harsh on Devindra. He has proven his worth as an actor in the emotional scenes when he was begging sunita not to leave him. Who didn't feel for him? If he is just playing shop keeper he doesn't have a lot to work with so plays the clown, but I think he should stay and be given a decent storyline. Why don't they bring Gina back.

Won't miss her. Dunno why she came back.

bring Gina back - that would be fun!

In the past I've said Dev should go but on further thought he has had sporadic moments of good acting. There need to be more scenes with Steve and Lloyd or bring back Vikram and Gina (I had totally forgotten about her!)

I agree with the other posters about Sunita's personality transplant and I am relieved that soon I won't have to speed through those cringy-worthy makeout scenes between her and Karl *shudder*. Now if only the PTB could do something about Tracy!

"The … writing team are currently working on an explosive exit for the character" Sums up what is wrong with The Street. Everything is "explosive". What is wrong with "fitting", "emotional" or "poignant". It was the "explosive" Karl/Sunita affair that ruined the character.

Oh and it should be: the team is ... Yet another comment on the standard of ITV's writing in one short sentence.
