I really did enjoy the wedding episodes this week! The hen night was a chuckle with the added conflict of Gail paying Kylie £1000 to take a hike. Kylie looked like she was considering it for a minute or maybe she was just a bit shocked that Gail would stoop so low! There was some amusing stuff at the stag do as well, particularly Kirk playing 'Toxic' on the jukebox! *snort*
Norris finding out for sure that Graeme and Xin's wedding was inevitable though Tina following him to the venue was a bit naff. She had to convince him not to say anything but it would look odd that she was there. Still, you've got to have that conflict so you need that to happen.
Just the look on Gail's face when Kylie showed up, late, at the registry office was worth the whole thing! I am surprised, though, that Xin didn't wear red. The Chinese believe that red is lucky for weddings and white is worn for mourning. Ok, maybe she did wear the proper colour after all. I've never seen a grimmer looking "Happy Couple"! I thought Graeme might back out at the last minute but seeing as he went through it, I'm now betting that he will actually fall for Xin and they'll go off together, maybe with Xin being offered a job somewhere else.
At the reception, you just knew Graeme's touching speech was really made to Tina who was standing beside Xin (and who'd caught the bridal bouquet!) but naturally, Norris couldn't keep a secret in and Rita really gave Tina and Graeme what for. Isn't Tina still lodging with Rita? I imagine there was no girly giggling over the cocoa that night! It'll be a bowl of Frosty Frosted Flakes!
David and Kylie are joined in unholy matrimony. Toxic probably is a pretty good assessment of both David and Kylie. Will they be happily ever after? Not likely. Nobody on soaps usually are. It should be entertaining, at least but I reckon David is going to get his heart broken and then he'll go off the rails again.
The confrontation between Gail and Kylie at the reception was good, too. Now Kylie has something to hold over Gail and she knows it. The nerve of Ms. Hypocrite Gail calling Kylie a nasty piece of work! Blackmail is blackmail and it only made matters worse. Even Nick went along with the money scheme, giving Gail the cash for it. It must be awful if even Nick disapproves!
I am surprised Gail didn't decamp to Audrey's for the night. It doesn't really make sense she'd stick around for the wedding night. I guess the Teneriffe flight Kylie bought with her money doesn't leave until the next day.
I loved listening to Norris grumble and snipe at the back of the wedding audience. I loved Gail's sour face, especially when Kylie announced she wanted to call her Mum, complete with Becky's rolling eyes over in the corner, too! I absolutely adored Kirk getting drunk and maudlin and thinking Audrey was coming on to him because she bought him a drink. Andy Whyment was an absolute star in these episodes and I'm not the only one that thought so!
Now. You may wonder about the venue used for the wedding. They used a building called Ryecroft Hall which is in Audenshaw, near Manchester. It's a listed building and is licensed for weddings for real. I've been there and I've posted some photos comparing them to screen shots from the wedding episodes over here. I've also posted a series of photos from the wedding over here.

Thumbs up: Sally and the Fascinator; Sally & Kirk gossiping; Norris being all Norrisy; Kirk thinking Audrey was interested; Kirk & the kebabs; Gail & Nick as the Lemondrop Twins; Xin looked lovely.
Thumbs down: Kylie & David spending their wedding night chez Gail (of course Gail should have been there, it's HER house -- why haven't D&K moved out or at least gotten a room for the night?); Rita; there was something very off about her reaction that I can't put my finger on; Emily's gift & Norris' scolding, ouch!
MIA: Gary Windass should have been there as David's one sorta friend; Mary should have been there, too, just because she never lets Norris out of her sight or to get all miffy when she didn't get the bouquet.
Huh? Though I loved Kirk tonight, I can't for the life of me figure out why he'd be there as he isn't family, nor is he a close friend, and he does have a job where he should have been needed today.
Overall, as weddings go, you could have driven a truck (convoy of trucks!) through all the storyline holes. C-
Dear Abbyk, you are generous. I give it a fail. As I posted earlier in another Rita's reaction is stupid -- bad writing-- and off character. She of all people would have understood right away and chided Norris for poking his nose into someone else's business. It's not about Rita... the fate of three young people hangs in the balance and Norris gets all high and mighty about how wrong this "sham" wedding is? Who exactly is he to judge? David's and Kylie's wedding is equally a sham then -- Kylie's after a meal ticket and the salon... does that make it any more right than Graeme and Xin? I think it makes it worse...
I was praying that Kev would buy into the pub with his "old mucker" and this dreadful Bank robbery nonsense was just a red herring but alas I dont think it is.
Surely Gail isn't guilty of BLACKMAIL, but bribery?
It was odd that Kirk was at the wedding and Gary not but I'm glad he was as he was the comic relief.
Yes it was Gail's house but if she knew they would be spending their wedding night under her roof, you would think she'd have left. Or perhaps she didn't realized they would not until they came in, i suppose. Probably means Nick was there upstairs too.
I think Rita reacted to the hurt she felt, after treating Tina like a daughter and felt betrayed after taking her in like a wounded bird. I'm sure she felt used as part of the scam, too.
Yes, John, probably it was bribery but i had used the term blackmail as that's what Kylie had used and it stuck with me.
Agree with your highlights abbyk. Sally's fascinator, her pride in it and her bitchy comments were in character and amusing. Every line from Kirkeh was a joy to watch. This is how Corrie should be.
The problem is this kind of writing plays a small part nowadays. Do the producers really think that Kylie being late is going to build up suspense? We all know she's coming, so its just boring. And why should Emily buy a present for Graeme and Xin, but not for David, who she has known all his life? It's just a plot device to pile on the agony, just like Rita, "Tough as Old Boots", Sullivan crying in a corner, because Tina lied to her.
I could write paragraphs about the holes available for the truck convoy to drive through. Carla is in London, (or is it Mars?) because she appears to be uncontactable. The order needs to be out by Monday, but the girls and Shaun demand recruitment of a new machinist and don't mention Sally swanning off to a wedding or Fiz being available, because John can now mind Hope.
Clearly the plotlines are developed in silos. Maria could have told Sally she could not go to the wedding and show off her fascinator. It would have been a lot more plausible than demanding everyone works without a break. Just when will the producers realise that people tune in to watch the characters, not ridiculous plots that are a huge yawn.
I agree with most of the negative comments above. The Graeme/Xin plot really has reached the heights of ridiculousness now, hasn't it? It's ruined Graeme as a character, and Xin has been revealed to be completely 2D (shocker).
I suppose Norris is old-fashioned and would say he believes in the sanctity of marriage etc, but I just found his moralising annoying. And yeah, Rita's reaction was very odd to watch, because it felt completely OTT for her. I suppose they don't give poor Barbara Knox much chance to *act* nowadays.
All-in-all, the wedding was a total non-event. Must try harder, Corrie...
But yeah, Sally and Kirk's gossiping provided some much-needed humour.
Agree with most of the comments above. Another moan coming up I am afraid - WHEN are they going to devise a decent storyline/plot for Rula Lenska, they have a fantastic actress in their midst and all she did yesterday was bitch about the wedding food when she wasnt eve a guest. This daft Marc/Marcia plot as well does not do her justice, instead of non stop stories about Leanne and Becky, USE THIS CHARACTER - grrrr.
Mister_tmg: you've been watching the wrong show. Go watch that Essex tv show thing that will make you a happier male.
I think something else that has been forgotten is gary's previous relationship with Kylie - although David was laughing at him and said that Kylie would never look twice at him!
I really enjoyed this episode..especially Kylies dress...my old man said I needed to get one of those...LOL. Too bad it's the swan song for Graeme. Writing was spot on for this episode..especially Norris and Rita (poor heartbroken thing). Gail..if looks could kill. I really am looking forward to the whole evil mother-in-law/daughter-in-law fiasco that's ahead...
I don't think they've forgotten about Gary and Kylie. On the stag night there was a remark David made that she'd never look at Gary and Gary looked slyly amused as if he wanted to say "um, she did!"
Rita has gotten so self-pitying, it's not all about you! ah!!
I'm just glad that Gail is unhappy--she's a terrible mom, and a boring character. I hope she got no sleep on Friday night.
OMG MIA Addendum: Martin & Ted! They're never mentioned, so I (almost) forgot about them. Were David's father & grandfather even invited? Check with Sally, I don't think they were even gossiped about.
abbyk said - oh my, thanks for the reminder, I HAD, forgotten about Ted that's how sloppy the writer are
Agree about Rita, she's almost turning into Emily Bishop with her pontificating.
they were fun to watxh but still hate the storyline of graham and xin its awful
as for ritas reaction-whatthe hell was that crying over it? sorry iwould have thought she would be shocked but once tina explained why they done it she would understand talk about an over reaction it wasnt harming her
its obvious it all comes out how else would graham leave-poor craig gazey i feel the life has been sucked out of him playing hispart now
hope he comes back one day and is the graham we used to know and love
as for kevin buying a car fro sal oh please why doesnt he grow up and move on
Great comments, writeup and photos at Tvor's blog.
Did no one notice David & Kylie's celebratory funky dancing in the Rovers reception? They were really going at it full tilt. I'd call it the punching arms dance. Cute an weird at the same time.
Yes Maggie we did notice David's dad dancing and he not even 21! Kylie's cage dancing was more like Knees up Mother Brown - LOL!
Loved the episode and being really "picky" but surely the scriptwriters could have got it right both brides signed their married names and that is wrong!! The bride signs in her current/maiden name. As a retired Registrar I have had to remind brides so many times.
MP i did notice that and thought maybe the law had changed as i rememberd signing my maiden name
seeing as they got an award for their accuracy in law you would think this wouldnt happen
I almost expected Tina, Graeme and Norris to start laughing when Rita started with the heaving-bosom sobbing....I know I was....and the many layers of medieval-looking clothing she had on didn't help either. Audreh's face when Kirk said he hoped she wasn't coming on to him was priceless!
