Jack Duckworth in suicide storyline?

I can't quite get my head around Jack Duckworth comitting suicide, but today's News of the World reckons that's what he'll do when he finds out he's got a terminal disease.

The paper says that when Jack finds out he's ill, he asks Connie to help him die.

Jack? Suicide? I don't think so.

He's a battler, surely, and if he doesn't have the strength to battle then he's of that generation who would turn himself over to the NHS lock, stock and barrel in order for them to do the best they can. I hope this Coronation Street 'spoiler' isn't true.

I'm not sure - assisted suicide - grim though it is - could be a really good plotline, if well-handled. On the one hand I'd hate to see Jack go out like that (would prefer him to go off into the sunset with Connie), but on the other, it could be really incredibly emotional and very memorable?

Yes, just as Alma's last days will never be forgotten.

Absolutely NOT, a character as well loved as Jack should have a happy exit, its enough with Natasha supposed to be topping herself. Too much gloomy and grim Deadenders scriptwriting imo.

There have been many deaths on Corrie over the decades, but I can't think of too many characters that have died from a specific disease.
Alma, of course, and Ted Sullivan, I think he died after an operation for brain cancer, and Ramsey.

I've always thought that, although unrealistic,Corrie writers might have steered clear of fatal diseases due to sensitivity for viewers who might be ill themselves.

Assisted suicide is a topical subject as yet unexplored by Corrie, and I can see Jack wishing to do end his life in this way.

I trust Corrie writers to make this a poignant and memorable ending for a beloved character like Jack.

I believe I remember reading years back that Anne Kirkbride was being treated for this type of Cancer.

I really hope they don't follow through with this. It is a blatant copy of EastEnders with the Ethel/Dot storyline. Surely in their 50th year they can make the effort to have an original storyline!

Jack looked really awful and sounded breathless on Monday night's episode.

Didn't he though. I do hope he's okay.

........It would seem to be a worthwhile subject if well researched and presented. It is something that some of us think about. I did not know about the EE death story but will try to find it.
